  1. Chia seeds are not recommended whole for the Doudenal Switch as they won't stay in your gut !ong enough to be converted into useable fiber to affect constipation. And may actually compound the problem. The DS needs its own website to avoid BAD advice from the other surgery patients.
  2. I understand that you are trying to be helpful but Water intake will not help someone that has the DS and is constipated. And raisin bran isn't advised because of the carb content. The only cure is increasing fat intake. Use caution when giving out advice. The Duodenal Switch is totally different than all other weightloss surgeries. And bad advice can be lethal.
  3. Can't wait to hear that you got some movement.
  4. Laxatives are not a long-term solution for a DS patient. Increased fat consumption is the only answer. I know y'all are just trying to be helpful but the DS is different than all other WLS and you're non DS advice can be harmful. The though is nice but dangerou .
  5. No. These guidelines are for Duodenal Switch only.
  6. Adding fiber does really work well for the DS. Fat is more effective.
  7. I can't agree more! Counting calories for a DSer is useless. You lose weight because that's how the tool works. Absorbing no more than 20% of Fats About 40% of Protein and the same for complex carbs. The fat that you don't absorb keeps the intestines lubricated. You may have loose stool a few times till you get the quantity right for your body but constipation can be severe if you don't eat enough fat.
  8. Stool softeners should be a last resort as they can mess up the gut flora that is essential in metabolism and immunity. Fat. Eat more fat. And when you've thought you've eaten too much eat a little more. Avocados. Real Butter. Real Cream. Bacon. Just eat it!
  9. Get a new nutritionist before they kill you! Don't limit your fat at all.
  10. You aren't eating enough fat. Get an order of guacamole or eat apiece of cheesecake to get things moving. Maintain by adding Peanut Butter, real butter an heavy whipping cream in your coffee daily. Do not follow a low fat die . It will kill you. You MUST eat fat.

You need to get up and walk for at least 10 minutes at a ti me every two hours. More when you are in pain. The gas pain won't go away with any other method.

The single loop DS or SADI is not the same as the actual Bileopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch and there is no Double Loop DS. There is a double anastomoses and the single which they said you were given. The SADI is very new. Long term success with it are unknown. There are higher risks for complications due to the digestive juices having to defy the laws of gravity to empty into the common channel. The DS works like a charm and if you stick with the program it offers very low risk for complications. I'd be pissed if I woke up to that information. And it is illegal to perform another to procedure without your knowledge or consent.

It's litt more than gastric bypass with a sleeve instead of a pouch. It is fairly new and there isn't much research about the long term success of this procedure or how much weightloss you can achieve and maintain. I hope you won't need a revision for a full DS. If you do Id sue your surgeon.

  17. Nearly three weeks ago I woke one morning to find that I was having what I thought at the time was a very, very heavy period. I've had PCOS for years before I had WLS on July 8th, so I was somewhat familiar with this. But this was different. I was bleeding more than I had ever remembered before and to make things worse my body was expelling large baseball sized clots at first and reduced to the size of a ping pong ball every time I stood up. I was in the bathroom every hour on the hour or more and changing pads that frequently. I went through more than 22 pads in just 3 days. I went to two ERs, the first one was not staffed to handle Gyno issues, and the second one was less than helpful. After 7 hours of waiting in the ER bleeding like I had been stabbed the ER Doc said there wasn't anything he could do for me and basically sent me on my way, he did the most ridiculous pelvic exam and then gave me a sheet and told me to talk to my doc. The next morning I got a call from my doctor's nurse telling me to get down to their walk in clinic immediately. I saw a nurse practitioner who gave me a proper pelvic and sent me almost immediately for a pelvic ultrasound to rule out a fibroid. I left a crime scene in the ultra sound room with the amount of blood I was losing. They sent me home and wanted me to see an actual gynecologist the next day for an endometrial biopsy to rule out uterine cancer. Meanwhile they were talking about hysterectomies, ablations, and D&Cs, none of which I wanted since I still have the delusion that I might get to have a child one day. The next day I had the most painful experience with the biopsy I have ever had. The doc gave me a shot of depo provera and gave me some birth control Patches since with the DS we don't absorb birth control pills correctly. The good news is all of the tests were normal except that now my Vitamin K levels are terrible. Also this is a common occurrence for people who lose a large amount of weight, and more likely for those who had heavy periods prior to surgery. I wanted to share my story because it was very, very scary. Also because you are not alone, and because it really is serious and don't let anyone tell you differently. The second ER doc could have halted the bleeding by giving me a depo provera shot on that first day, but because he was completely unethical and a jerk he didn't. He instead gave me a prescription for birth control which I told him I couldn't take because of my DS.

Brenda I added you to my FaceBook, once you add me I can invite you to the group, but I'm not the admin. She will contact you for details regarding your surgery for official add. It's a closed group which is nice cause you can post whatever questions you have even the embarrassing ones and the whole of FB won't be looking at it!

    Question

This is the Duodenal Switch forum. Gastric Bypass is a completely different surgery and has different requirements. Our diets are not even remotely the same. The gastric bypass diet which is low carb, high Protein and LOW FAT will not only make us very sick but ultimately could kill us. DSers NEED fat in their diet to survive, Low Fat or even Non Fat foods are out of the question. We only absorb on average 20% of the fat we consume and we cannot absorb our Vitamins without adequate fat. It's that very malabsorption that causes us to need to eat more often through out the day. People that have had the Duodenal Switch surgery should eat something every 2 hours even if its just a stick of hard cheese or a spoonful of Peanut Butter. The 6 meal per day regimen is essential to our success and health. By the way, I know this nutritionist personally and she recommended the low fat diet regimen to me... and I've talked to so many veteran DSers to know that is a really bad thing she is even suggesting. It's tough to find a nutritionist that really understands the dietary needs of someone who has had the Duodenal Switch.
  20. Yup. The only downside is needing a new wardrobe.
  21. I am now 96 days post op and I've now lost 64lbs. I haven't decided if that is a great number or not. People are more likely to comment now that they can see that I've lost a big amount of weight. I'm not even half way to my goal but I'm getting close. First of all I want to reassure newbies that although the journey is not easy, it does get better. I'm only 3 months out and I'm really able to eat just about anything. I don't push it with bread or vegetables but so far I haven't had many issues with any foods. I can no longer tolerate protein shakes but I'm getting my protein from real foods now so I don't worry about it. Some days I wish I could just not eat that day. For us it's just not an option. Ensuring I have plenty of fat included in each meal seems to help with my skin texture and preventing constipation. I even made biscuits and gravy this morning. I found these tiny tubes of biscuits in the store, I found the butter kind, and there are 5 small biscuits in each tube. Of course I can't even eat that many at one time, but making the bigger biscuits would be just wasteful. So I bake them till they are a little overdone cause I like them crunchy. Then I baked 4 slices of bacon, 2 for me and 2 for the roommate, and used all of the bacon grease to make a rather small amount of gravy, I used about 2 tbsp of flour and even a small pat of butter to add a little more fat to those carbs. It was heavenly. The protein was in the bacon and I lightly fried an egg in butter, leaving the yolk runny, to add even more protein to the meal. And topped the whole thing off with a glass of whole milk. I love my DS!

    Weight loss time

The average weight loss range is 1/2 to 1 lb/day. You are in the upper range. That's fantastic.

    Weight loss percentages?

Too bad they don't include the Duodenal Switch in their numbers. I don't understand why they don't since the VSG is the first step of the DS and without the DS the VSG would not even be an option. I love being able to eat everything I love to eat without worrying about actual calorie count. I only worry about Protein and Fat levels, and a stay aware of carbs but not really.

Barker's Nutritionist is not geared for the Duodenal Switch, she will give you recommendations for RnY which are not appropriate for you. You should join the face book group Lubbock Area Duodenal Switchers, LADS. We meet monthly but even better than that you'll have access to DS vets who can properly answer your questions. Bread is the number one reason for incisions splitting. And I was told by Kathy not to try bread for at least a year. I tried eating the end of a hot dog as an experiment, and chewed and chewed, as soon as I swallowed it my stomach told me immediately that it was a bad idea. Beyond that danger bread is empty carbs. If I want something starchy I'll have crackers with my tuna for example but sandwich bread and any kind of yeast dough is just not worth the risk.
