  1. @@UpandAtom I would suggest Water therapy, if that is allowed by your ortho. Water moving will put less weight on the affected joint and allow you to get the exercise you need. Just a thought? Sorry to hear about this set back, you've made great progress... and your journey has some more way to go! I wish you all the best as you make the right decision for you...

    Approved and SCARED

Like @@Dub my only regret is not doing this earlier in my life. Believe me, there will come a time, 3 months. 6 months a year after you've had your surgery, that you will look into a mirror and not recognize the person starring back at you. You will be in the middle of doing something, and pause, not because the old you would be out of breath, tire, sweaty or exhausted, but because you realize you can do this and you are not out of breath, tired or exhausted (sweaty is a good thing). You will be out with friends or family, and someone, who hasn't seen you is awhile, will talk to your friends, and realize they didn't recognize you. You will have people talk to you, and treat you like 'normal' people do... You will notice, no one is glaring at you. There will come a time, you grow tired of explaining what happened to you or what you did to loose all the weight. You will also become proud, because people compliment you and say nice things about you... This is the ultimate price we have paid.... I wish you the best of luck, as you continue your journey. Yes, we have all stumbled at times, but we get back up, because we can, and work harder to do the right thing.

Any other gay sleevers out there?

I too, came from a small midwestern town... and Catholic... and a mother who opening said disparaging words about 'the gays'... as I look back, I could have come out of the closet better, then I did, but I haven't looked back and have been happier ever since, along with my husband of over 2 years and my lover for the past 12 years... I am truly a lucky man, as he has supported me through my decision and my transformation. am also lucky to have family (yes MY FAMILY) and some friends that love and respect me... Even my dad is happy about my husband (a son, he wishes he had... as he is much more handy, when it comes to plumbing, electric and general fixer upping, than myself or my two brothers)... To you all, I am happy to ready about your successes as we share this journey we call life!

Any other gay sleevers out there?

I had my surgery in Tijuana Mexico... So by the time I got home I just had 4 days of clear liquids... Just as another note on this subject... Just because you mouth is temporary 'out of commission' doesn't mean you partner can't take full advantage of 'other' things. Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App

Any other gay sleevers out there?

Yes, I agree, when you feel comfortable, but my first week post op diet was clear liquids (that rules our 'swallowing') and the second week was full liquids (swallowing would be okay - I suppose)... but I would certainly I would use the comfort as the rule!

    Running Shoes for Big Feet

Well I sadly have not been blessed with BIG feet, but I do have wide feet. If memory serves me right NB shoes come come as a model number and once you did find a pair you liked, it would make it easier to purchase that same model on line (I hate shopping). I use Merrells, because of the arch support. Since my surgery, my feet have changed and now can fit comfortably in regular width shoes, I am currently on my second pair of my new shoes, I still wear an old pair, for out door lawn/garden work (they are very loose). Good luck on your choice... keep moving
  11. @@kyle.odom I hear ya. I work in the medical field as well (an ICU nurse, working nights) I have gone from wearing 2XL scrubs to wearing Medium pants and large shirts (I could easily wear mediums, but I like the extra room it gives me ). Good luck on your journey and keep up the great work!

@@kyle.odom I would suggest getting a personal trainer. They would be very helpful in helping you develop a healthy and safe activity plan. You don't want to hurt yourself, or overdue it, causing any unnecessary set backs. Good Luck on your journey. @@rgodfrey09 I'd love to be added to that page as well.

    Starting to research the process

I agree with OKCPirate, and like him, I too had my surgery in Mexico. Another piece of advice, call and talk to your health insurance. I work for a hospital, which ironically performs bariatric surgeries, but our health insurance specifically does not cover any bariatric surgery, so my only alternative was self pay.

    Starting to research the process

I would start the process, by researching what type of surgery would be the best fit for you. From my research and experience (I am a nurse, working in the ICU). I have seen more complications with the lap band. The seminar I went to, the Doctor said the #1 surgery isn't the lap band or the sleeve, it is the conversion from the band to the sleeve, because of complications. The band is NOT intended as a permanent process, at some time, you need a second surgery to remove it. I am not trying to persuade you in any direction, but informing you of the process I took. Having bariatric surgery is a personal decision and a LIFELONG commitment. I wish you all the success as you start your journey and welcome to the guys room.
  17. My insurance specifically does not cover any bariatric surgery. I ended up going to Mexico and had a wonderful experience. I bragged so much about it, my nephew and brother in law, both have gone down there and had their sleeves done. Mine cost me $4400 and $200 for my airfare, which is about my insurances deductible. Good luck on your journey!

    Back Hair

I agree, I was furry before surgery and now I am like an ape! I do shave... I actually enjoy getting my back waxed. My hair, even what is left on my head is very fine, but it is like my head hair migrated down my back... so getting it waxed isn't a terrible feeling, although I do have a high pain tolerance. I actually wondered how that device worked out? I shave my head, but I constantly miss spots and I would imagine the same thing would happen with my back, as I wouldn't be able to see my back.
  19. I was 277 when I started my journey, and based on your statement, you need to UP your Protein. Get closer to 100 grams a day, with keeping your fluids going (I'd suggest a Protein shake or two, fluids and protein). Understanding the knee injury, but once you get more weight off, your knee will appreciated it and give you back more mobility. Good luck!
  20. Sorry to hear that UpandAtom. Would Water aerobics be less stressful of your knee injury?

@haolenate Good luck with your journey!!! I had the sleeve, so never had a problem with food coming up and I am a nurse, so needles don't bother me.
