betrthnever reacted to fesenjoon in Pouch Reset Attempt for 4.5 years post-sleeve
    Hi Everyone,
I'm a male sleever that has relapsed back into bad habits. I did my surgery back in May 2012. I initially had my starting weight at 122 kg (268 lbs). I successfully dropped the weight down to 75 kg (165 lbs) during the first 18 months. For my first two years, I always logged my meals on MyFitnessPal and worked out 4-5x a week. Was averting 1300-1600 calories daily for maintenance.
Unfortunately, has a series of personal life events that completely overwhelmed me in 2014. Lots of depression and stress in my life, so all the bad habits crept back in. I got up to 100 kg (220 lbs) last month and I was horrified!
Decided to do something happen and regain the willpower to restart my former positivity life. It's amazing what a negative mindset can do wreck havoc! Anyways, after researching these forums for fellow regainers, I decided to follow the pouch reset diet ( http://www.obesitycoverage.com/the-pouch-reset-losing-weight-after-weight-regain/) to jump start my path to getting back to losing weight.
It's seriously more challenging than the 5 day pouch reset since it's 10 days! I'm currently at the end of Day 5. Wow! Being on a liquid diet is really tough! It was so much easier to drink liquids immediately post-surgery than today! I'm shrinking the 10 days to 8 days (shorting the last two stages).
For Days 1-3, I hovered around a calorie intake between 500-700 calories, Protein around 70g, and carbs almost nonexistent (<25 grams).
Days 4-5, I got up to 1000 calories daily, 70 grams, and tried to keep carbs under 85 grams.
Key aspects that helped me through the 5 days:
    - try to exercise if you can. I did daily cardio of 150-200 calories burn.
    - drink lots and lots of Water.
    - log everything on an app.
    - I still get hungry between meals (and I have to remind myself that this is head hunger and not real hunger).
    - BE POSITIVE AND HAVE THE RIGHT MINDSET FOR CHANGE!
I'm weighed myself and I'm down 2.5 kgs (5.5 lbs). I assume that some of this is Water loss. I'm seriously looking forward to tomorrow when I can start having soft Protein (Hooray!).
Hope this post helps some of the regainers out there. It does happen, but we need to get back on track!

First and foremost, I strongly believe in the idea that we are what we think we are, so the negative self talk has GOT to go. You are a successful WLS patient who has fallen off the wagon a bit.
A failure is someone who quits, refusing to try again. You regained only 20 pounds and you are back. You could have waited until you had regained 40, 60, 100, or 100+ or you could have thrown in the towel all together.
    YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE.
Go back to your surgeon and see what he/she recommends. Go back to your pre-op diet for a week or two. Go back to liquids for a week or two. Start weighing/measuring/tracking your food and move your ass a little more than normal. You can totally do this.
You are not a failure until you stop trying. You don't sound like a failure to me at all.

And then there was the time at costco where I was texting and just didn't pay attention that I walked right into the men's restroom...excuse me as I back up slowly!

Heyyyyy, congrats on your weight loss!! That's awesome!!
I'm hopeful that my band's okay, but yeah.. the more I've been reading, the more I'm preparing myself for that possibility. A friend of mine who was banded had hers removed and had the sleeve done, and she hit her goal weight and was much more successful with that. She was getting stuck on sips of Water with the band!
Yay for being able to eat better, too! I can't remember a lot of specific foods causing problems with me getting stuck, but I also stopped being diligent about chewing well, about not drinking fluids with meals, and so forth.
Congrats again on your weight loss, though! That is such a great accomplishment, and so much hard work and dedication!! And good luck to your mom! I hope the post-op pain isn't too bad on her!

    HI Secret,
I was banded in Feb, 2008 and I am now a revision to RNY as of 10/5/2016. It took me 2.5 years to lose 80 pounds with the band, and now, at 9 months out from RNY, I am down to 142 (69 pounds down and almost to goal). I will say good luck to you, you will need it - and using your word - BUUUUUTTT - my surgeon says that it is not a matter of "if" but a matter of "when" that it comes out. It is a foreign object and might cause problems for you in the future. My mother had her's out 3 years after getting banded. She ended up with an erosion. And as of 2 weeks ago also had a revision to RNY. It would be cool if it does work for you long term. I can eat better now. SALADS, chicken, beef. Happy days! Good luck to you :-)

betrthnever got a reaction from SpreadingShalom in What does "Back to Basics" with Lap Band mean to you?
I was told to not drink 20 minutes before a meal and 20 minutes after. Put the fork down between bites. Eat for 20 minutes only. 2 bites of Protein, 1 bite of veg, carbs should be avoided - but if wanted then only be the last bite. Eat 3 meals a day only (no snacking). No carbonation, no sugar. Eat without distraction (no tv, no reading, etc.). 80 oz of Water a day. Didn't have to worry about counting calories or measuring food if these rules were followed.
From what I understand my Dr. has since revised some of these basics like drinking before a meal and the snacking. Sometimes I think it would be wise for the clinics / Dr. to update their veteran banded patients on the newer findings on the to do's/not to do's of the LapBand. Things change.
    Thanks for this topic!

Quick update: Budget submitted, so I should have a more thorough update sometime tomorrow. In short:
The Cartographer and I are still getting on as friends, so far so good?
The Actress ROCKS, is currently committed to at least 2 years without a romance and it's lovely to have another friend in my life.
On Sunday my friend The Gourmand and I will be making hundreds of sushi (maki, nigiri, gunkan, and sashimi) in a dry run of our work for AllRecipes. Should be a great time!
Okay, nevermind, this is the longform update:
This last week we had a real estate agent friend out to advise us on how to go about converting the house to a duplex by adding a central interior wall (cost estimate, impact on resale, etc etc). Long story short, her advice was DO NOT DO IT! We've got (apparently) somewhere between $200k and $250k in equity in the house (hooray for buying in late 2011 and it being an election year approaching summer) and, in her work over the last 30 years, she's helped a number of clients (which we are not) through similar divorces (one spouse realizes they are gay and it's amicable) and only once has living on the same property survived beyond the acquisition of a new partner. Additionally, the preschools and elementary schools that provide appropriate services for Little Smye are all out of the district we live in now. Her advice is: Sell the house this summer, use the profits to 1) give Mrs. Smye a large chunk of $ to survive on while she sets up her practice/downpayment on a small house for her/Little Smye 2) give myself a smaller chunk (only $80k) to completely zero out all student loans 3) reduce myself spousal support by way of the larger share of profits going to Mrs. Smye at the outset 4) Provide myself a larger portion of his income to be able to rent for a short while near to work and build a stockpile to buy again when the market next drops 5) provide Little Smye a stable, single move, landing in a near-forever home. It's utterly heartbreaking, but admittedly seems to be the most reasonable solution. I don't want to give up my home, but I can't afford to support my own mortgage, a household for Mrs. Smye once she moves out, AND make my student loan payments. And if Mrs. Smye is going to move westward towards better schools for Little Smye , I want to be near to them. My biggest anxiety (other than losing my wife [oh wait, that's already done] and not living with my son most of the time [in his best interest based on the careers of his parents]) is the financial aspect of all of this. Mrs. Smye took a low paying job and I acquired $80k in student loans in order to maximize our family's long-term earning potential, but with the divorce it leaves us both effectively screwed... except that we've got such equity in the house that we can effectively solve both problems (giving her enough of a cushion to live off of until she finishes her licensure and eliminating all of my student debt). We've not made any decisions at this point, but it's looking like we'll likely aim for a deal to be reached mid-end of spring with closing in early July (I have July off, which would allow for crashing on Mrs. Smye's couch while I hunt for a new home once we have her securely placed). We'll also likely stay married until after the house is sold as there are no capital gains taxes on up to $500k if we're married, but $250k if we're divorced. We'll then see about doing one of those 'self-guided divorce' deals for $800 rather than the $8-20k attorney-guided divorces.

It's been 6 months since I posted on this thread, and almost 5 months since surgery, and I have to say I haven't developed a new addiction. An addiction, imo, is something we do outside of moderation. Something we feel we don't have control over, or is used as an avoidance technique. And this feeling can apply to good things, such as working out. If you are going to the gym and working out 2 hours a day, and the thought of your spouse doesn't bring happy thoughts, then maybe you might be using the gym (in the name of getting healthy-there IS a positive side to this) to avoid a situation that must be dealt with. I'm the first one to admit that I need clothes but I don't need more then what I can wear within a week or two. Collecting stuff isn't going to make me happy. I love to travel, spending time with friends and family - no different then before but not centered around food. I like what Alex said - being into life. And into balance.

    Hi Everyone,
I would really like to see this thread get up and running again.
To all of you original, earlier posters out there - where are you??
I think I have just "ignored" the fact that I'm banded. I have stopped working it, stopped thinking about it (except when I can't eat, which is rare anymore as I'm not filled), stopped seeing it as a tool for weight loss, and have even stopped mentioning it unless medically necessary. I don't even consider myself as a real WLS patient anymore. However, I am just fooling myself.
I have joined and quit weight watchers 3 times since I've been banded (February, 2008) and have not lost a pound, been on numerous reduced calorie diets and have not lost any weight, seen a dietitian for years and even currently have a trainer and my weight has even been slightly increasing. Been told my metabolism is shot.
I'm trying (again) for a revision with my insurance company. I was denied last October. I remember what happened when I was approved for the band back then - my confidence, motivation and self esteem returned. My drive grew and I found it easier to make better decisions about what I ate. It was a new day!
Calling fellow banders for support and camaraderie!
    Where are you?

I just want to say that I'm so thrilled with my decision to go with a revision and I wonder why I even bothered with the lap band in the first place.. Because I didn't want to be internally altered... Like many of you, I suffered more from the band (and what it was doing to me - cutting into my liver) then from the alterations that have been made to my body by switching to bypass. I can now actually eat good foods - salad and Protein - and not throw up or be in pain. Surgery on 10/5/15 and 3 months later down 46 pounds. Awesome!
