Hi, yes I was diagnosed as a type 2, they did know quickly about the dka but there were other issues present as well,i was severely dehydrated and other affects from the medication. They were questioning whether I was type 1 because it is very uncommon for a type 2 to develop dka. I have since seen a New endocrinologist and was tested to see if I'm type 1 or 2. He stated that being on insulin for 10 plus yrs then stopping all at once with out being tappered off is probably set everything in motion, top it off with the dehydration caused by the oral meds. The hospital I was at did a good job and was very thorough with everything I can't complain about them. Thank fully I have been doing well and back on track still on insulin but I'm ok with that. I just wanted to warn people and hopefully save some one from going through what I went through. I have been a diabetic for 20 yrs insulin dep on an insulin pump. I was sleeved on 3/10/14. I was d/c from hospital with out any insulin or medications for diabetes feeling great, like I never has surgery . My blood sugars were good for a week or so, but shortly after they started to rise into the 300 as I suspected it would. My endocrinologist wanted to treat this with oral meds rather than resort back to insulin. She tried to prescribe me metformin, I refused to take it as its #1 side affect is diarrhea and non of us need extra help in that area! So next she wanted to prescribe Juanovia which should not be taken by anyone who has or has a history or gallstones {which I do} so that was out. Next up she prescribed me a new medication called INVOKANA. I started to take it on Tuesday by Wed I was urinating like crazy , like every hour kind of crazy and diarrhea . Thursday still urinating feeling very tired and began with a funny feeling in my stomach. Thursday night I was feeling short of breath. Friday morning I barely woke up, feeling very lethargic , still peeing like a race horse, short of breath, vomiting. I was taken to the ER and was admitted .After spending 7 days in the hospital and umpteen blood, urine and any other tests they could think of later I was diagnosed with DKA = Diabetic ketone acidosis, Doctor said had I not come in when I did I probably would not have woken up the next morning. Cause of the DKA = INVOKANA. Apparently #1 side affect is sever dehydration, frequent urination and pretty much shuts down your kidneys and makes you spill sugar into your blood causing your body to produce extreme amounts of toxic poison's and acids causing your organs to shut down. DKA when not treated immediately can cause coma, brain swelling, damage and worst death. I was lucky... So please be hyper vigilant when your doctor orders something , look into it first. Don't just trust that she's a doctor and she knows everything and don't worry about looking stupid ask questions. Doctors are human they make mistakes, but because of her mistake my 3 yr old son was almost left motherless. I hope this helps , even if only 1 person. Good luck on your new journey everyone. Rose

yes this has been happening on and off, I didn't think it was surgery related till I saw this.

I'm glad I am not alone, almost 1 month post op and i've been having the same issue. keep us posted as to what your Dr. says . I think i'm doing good with drinking. I was thinking that its probably hormones changing.

At my pre-op testing they found I had a 2 cm gallstone. My surgeon said that if he went in and the gallbladder looked "angry" that he would remove it, if it looked ok he would leave it. The reason he gave me was this. The gallbladder filters toxicins in our body , during the sleeve op everything is sterile and pulling the dirty toxic gallbladder out thru the sterile opening can post a risk of getting an infection. So rather than doing it if its still in decent shape he'd rather be safe and deal with it when it becomes an issue. Good luck.

At my first Dr. appt on Oct 22,2013 I was 455, day of surgery I was 424, today exactly 3 weeks post op I weighed in at 396! down 28 lbs. since surgery and 59lbs total. Feels good. I have been very fortunate to have not had any issues no pain, nausea nothing at all, that I was expecting and prepared to face,, Best of luck to everyone!

Yes that's pretty much what I drank pre and no post op. I like the chocolate best, they sell they big cases at BJS wholesale if there is one near you and at target also, Think there's choc, van and strawberry...

Yes I was told it was fine just make sure its no sugar added, look at the label and if there is no sugar, glucose, fructose added then its fine should only be the fruits as ingredient. There will be some sugar but it is the natural sugar from the fruit and that's fine. I also add sugar free jams or jelly to my yogurt or cottage cheese. Baby applesauce in the squeeze pouch comes in mixed flavors I got some that was apple/ grape and apple/peach they had many flavors to choose from.. Good luck hope this helped.

Hi I'm 5 days post op. As far as pain goes I guess I'm very fortunate as to not have much I haven't had a pain killer since the day I was discharged, I can say day 3 & 4 was very tuff. This might sound crazy but I need to ask. Did any one have a "hospital" (for lack of a better description) taste/ smell that they couldn't get rid of when you came home?? Nothing not broth not Water tasted right everything I tasted or smelled had that horrible smell to it. It was so bad that I did not eat anything on day3 &4 because of it. I drank as much water as I could but it still wasn't enough. Finally today I was able to have some yogurt and some broth. It is tuff for the first few weeks but we have to pull thru and get to where we need to be after all it will all be worth it. Good luck to every one. Rose

My Program charges $550.00. All the programs in my area that I know of charge around the same. I'm still not sure what this covers as I'm sure they will be charging my ins company for every visit to the surgeons office and nutritionists.
