    Fear of OFF DAYS

I sometimes think this although I do take 1-2 days off a week. The other thing I worry about is what will happen to my weight when I can no longer workout at this level as I get older? Will I start to gain again? For some of us it is a part of nature to worry. I am this way a bit of a worry wort. I guess we just have to trust in ourselves that we will do the right thing for our health and bodies

    Jogging/running advice needed

Thanks, I found a fairly local store called Runners Edge that I plan to go to for some help with a new pair of running shoes. Hopefully this will help.

    Jogging/running advice needed

Fairly new runner (started about 4-5 months ago) have recently gone over the 3 mile mark and can now run 3.75 miles in about 39 minutes. My problem is today when I got back from a run and took off my socks my toe nail was bleeding and the nail feels loose. Any advice from the veteran runners. Should I take a break from running? Just bandage it and persevere through it? Does this mean I need new running shoes? They've been fine up to this point no pain in knees or back or anything like that. If I do need new running shoes any recommendations? thank you for your help.

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Need some advice for all of you veteran runners. Today I came back from my run and found the nail on one of my toes slightly loose with blood all around it. It is the toe next to the pinky toe and was bothering me a bit when I was running. Has anyone dealt with this? Does this mean its time for new sneakers (hope not). My sneakers have not bothered me in the past and are about 3-4 months old. Should I put a band aid on next time and just persevere? Thanks for any tips.

    The Biggest Loser Effect

I agree The Biggest Loser is TV not reality. They are working out 6 hours a day with the best trainers in the world and do not have the distractions of a job, kids, husband, house cleaning, etc. But I like to see the last chance workouts with everybody moaning and groaning and sweating. I would DVR the show each week and get on my elliptical and workout while watching it pushed me at the same time Bob or Jillian were pushing the others. One of the posters above talked about how hard it is to start a workout routine. It can be but don't assume you have to get up at the crack of dawn and go to the gym. I actually do not like gyms at all. I started by walking outside (now jogging 3-4 miles, 3x per week). I also have dvds that challenge you with hand weights I mix it up and do a different one 1-2 times per week. There are also so many free on demand workouts on cable tv. Make it easy for yourself to start.

    1 Year Anniversary

Today is my one year anniversary and I just had to post here and thank all of you veterans for all of the advice and support you have provided to me over the past year and a half since I started reading this site well before my surgery. You have provided invaluable help to me and to many others I am sure. My surgeons office was great and I went to a few support group meetings but found much better support here (I think its the annonimity). I am proud to be able to legitimately post here now and hope I can share some of what I have learned with others. This surgery has provided me with a second chance to enjoy life and it has been more successful than my wildest dreams. I just got back from a 3.7 mile run outside, yes I said outside! I would have never done this a year ago since I would feel too exposed. I also can't believe I am now fit enough to actually jog this distance. Alright already enough about me I just can't wipe the smile off my face.

    1 Year Anniversary

Thank you all and Isereno you have been one of my favorite vets to follow. I find your posts to be motivating and positive.
  9. Today is exactly 1 year for me. All I can say is what a difference a year makes!. I am down over 80 pounds and about 8 pounds from goal weight. Today went for a jog and did 3.7 miles in 39 minutes. I would never have been able to do that a year ago. I still track all my food in my fitness pal. It of course much harder to get the last few pounds off and I do struggle with keeping my daily calories down. My doctor says 800 calories a day to loose weight. Well I find it nearly impossible to stay that low and am more in the 1000 calories range but I am exercising on almost a daily basis so I think that helps. I still do not eat and drink together, get in my Protein and avoid bad carbs. I do well most of the time. This is still one of the best decisions I ever made. My life has improved dramatically. Would love to hear from other March 2013 people.

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Did 3.72 miles today in 39 minutes according to map my run. I just started using this app and am absolutely love it. Does anyone know how accurate it is? Seemed right in terms of miles and said I burned 492 calories. Hope its accurate because I really love the constant prompts it gives you when running.

    GOAL met!

Wow that can't be the same person! You lost 20 years too with all those pounds. Congratulations you are inspiring.
  12. It was about the 50 pound mark before people began noticing. I definitely saw changes in my clothes before that point but hard to see myself when looking in the mirror. I am at a year out from surgery tomorrow and have gone from and 18-20 to an 8. I definitely see the difference now but it too longer than expected.
  13. There will always be an excuse we can come up with such as "then fall and the holidays came" or "I'm going to Florida next week but when I get back" or "the surgeon didn't tell me about meetings". This kind of thinking is how we allow ourselves to go back to old habits. Stop looking for reasons and start right now tracking food, getting in Protein first and in the right amounts and minimizing carbs. Please don't think I am being harsh. I recognize a lot of the same thinking in myself sometimes and when I do I try to kick my own azz and tell myself there will always be a reason or excuse for me not doing the hard work. You can do this. Keep coming back to this site for support. Good luck.

    I am such a failure!

I am a firm believer that what we are eating is 80% and exercise only 20%. Focus on the basics, track what you are eating everyday and everything. I use my fitness pal but you use whatever you like best. Don't fudge what you are eating because you are only lying to yourself. See if you are getting enough Protein, or too many carbs. You can do this, little steps start right now tracking your food. Good luck. Keep coming back here for support.

    St. Patrick's Day Challenge

This mornings weight was 143.6. Must get my eating under control.

    Goal weight

My surgeon has also never mentioned a goal weight. My own original goal 150 which seemed like a stretch to me. Now its 135 which would put me in the normal range for my height and a 25% BMI. When I get there I guess I will know if its the right weight for me or to keep going.

Sounds wonderful. So great to hear from someone over 2 years out making sound so easy. I know its not easy but sounds like its not a constant struggle either.

Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Really pushed myself today and did 3.5 miles. It was one of those days when I felt like I could keep going. It took me almost 40 minutes going to try to increase pace a little ( had to stop and tie my shoe laces 2x).

    Exercise?

Well on March 5th I will be one year out. I went from a size 18 to an 8 and lost 82 pounds. Feel wonderful. I started out with a slow walk gradually increasing speed and incline on the treadmill than added in 1 to 2 days of strength training with hand weights and a dvd. Today I worked myself up to running 3.5 miles outside! can't believe my body can do this. It is so rewarding.
  20. On March 5th I will be exactly 1 year out. I am down 82 pounds and went from a size 18 to size 8! I am thrilled with my progress and so happy I made this choice. I didn't tell anyone but my husband and while reflecting back I am glad I made this decision and it was definitely right for me. My close friends and family see me working out vigorously and that I have changed my eating habits dramatically. No one has ever questioned how I am loosing they are just happy I have. Everyone needs to make their own decision.

    Funny NSV

I have to share a funny NSV I had Friday night. It is 10 at night my phone rings and its my 14 year old son calling to tell me he has fallen while ice skating and needs to go to the emergency room. I throw on my coat and run out the door and pick him up at the skating rink to drive him to the ER. The main office at the skating rink had cleaned him up and releases him to me. Well fast forward 3 hours later we are leaving the hospital driving home (he needed 9 stitches and fractured his nose) and he says to me "Mom I didn't even recognize you when you came into the skating rink office to pick me up because you looked so skinny to me". Well is it wrong that this is the thing I remember most about the evening? Believe me 14 year old sons do not ever notice their moms figures so this was a huge compliment.

    Embarrassingly clueless to working out!

Although I love to exercise I do not like gyms and personal trainers would not work well for me. You do not need to spend a lot of money or even any money. Walk around your own neighborhood and download the free couch to 5k app. Or you can use some of the free on demand workouts on your cable tv from your own living room. Everyone is different but I like to workout alone. Walking or jogging with someone else prevents me from "getting in the zone". With limited time to exercise I want to be able to focus without the social distraction of a friend. Bottom line don't let a lack of funds prevent you from getting in good workouts. Best of luck.

    What's For Breakfast Today?

I had maple brown sugar Quaker Instant oatmeal low sugar variety only 110 calories and I think 7 g of protein.
  25. I must admit I am probably a pretty shallow person because I don't think health reasons would have been enough to get me to have the surgery and change my ways. I was a relatively healthy obese person but miserable with the way I looked. I got the surgery for vanity but there is no doubt it has improved my health too. For the first time I am looking forward to going on vacation with friends this summer. I am even considereing a 2 piece bathing suit. Who would have ever thunk it!
