memebear got a reaction from Alex Brecher in How do you feel about eating out after weight loss surgery?
We go out to eat a lot. I really don't worry. I can find always find something even if I have to remove the bread from a sandwich. appetizers are almost always a source of food. I usually find fish or something that is full of Protein, Soups, and salads are almost a great selection. I haven't lost a great deal of weight but I have lost inches. Pants are from a 22 to an 18. Total weight loss from the begging visit is 25 lb. but only 5 of that is since my surgery. Inches are since my surgery. I can wear a much smaller blouse maybe even a regular large size (haven't tried but sales people think I can). I can't wait to get out of the "big and beautiful" sizes. Am really glad I am a banded.

I really didn't feel much restriction until after my 3rd fill. Just remember to use this time as a learning period. Practice eating slowly, taking small bites, and chewing really well. You'll be glad you did once you do finally start to feel some restriction.

First fill today - 6 weeks post op. My body shape is changing and I've gone down a pant size but only lost 1lb from surgery date of 1/21 (according to doc scales). Exercising, completely changed the way I eat (no soda, no junk food, Protein first, etc.).
Doc said he was gonna put in fill, then have me drink til I felt restriction. He put in 3 ccs and I inhaled 2 glasses of Water with no problem. I told him I could keep drinking and he said that 3ccs is his max fill. He said "I'll see u in 4 weeks and I'm sure u will need a fill".
Anybody else had similar experience with (1) not feeling restriction with first fill and (2) dropping a size with virtually no loss in lbs?

    Goal for March 31st - 202
    Weight on March 1st - 216
    Weight on March 8th - 212
I have seen 210 on the scale this week but today I'm at 212. Not worried. I seem to get to a new number then dance up and down it for a while before another new low finally appears. Ten pounds in the three weeks left of March is a little ambitious but I think I can do it if I exercise like crazy.

All is well. I spent one night in hosp, No gas pains in shoulder, but I did get the dry heaves every time I got up. Not much pain, just some discomfort where the sutures were made. So glad to be on this side of surgery. Good Luck all you March Banders.

Hi, I had my surgery in august so I am about 7 months in and have only lost about 35 lbs. I lost 10 of those on the pre-op diet. I am filled at 5.2 I believe. I get sick a lot no matter what I eat. I can eat something and be fine and the next day eat the exact same thing and it gets stuck. Also, when I do get sick because i feel my food is stuck most of what comes up isn't even food its flem. Does that happen to anyone else? I haven't lost much weight in a while no matter how good I eat. I don't know what to do. Hoping everything is ok with band and that it hasn't stopped working. I know Im eating bigger portions then I should. I don't get that same full feeling I did when I first came out of surgery. Does anyone have any advice or have experienced some of the same things?

Memenear, do you have an appointment for a fill? I'm supposed to go back on 3/28 to see if I need one. I'm pretty sure I will since my hunger is increasing.

Presurgery I was 440 pounds now I'm 210 pounds. Seven days after my surgery I had an upper G.I. bleed and bled out in my sleep, somehow I woke up after losing two units of blood. People still ask me "Frank would you do it all over again I mean you almost died from the surgery"
Yes yes I would in a heartbeat, for three years I confined to the house with leg paralysis due to spinal stenosis. I would've really been dead in a few years, and now I don't even need back surgery, my rheumatologist is baffled at how the Calcium buildup in my spine receded and four years later shows no signs of regrowth. We are all selfish like your mom in some way shape or form, in the end she's your mom, forgive.

SOunds like maybe your mom is afraid of you changing and the place she imagines she holds in your life being unwelcome. Is she one of those who 'loves you' with food or with constant 'tips' or comments on how you 'look bad'? If you no longer are heavy, then her oh-so-helpful comments will no longer have a target. Some do that 'you won't need me any more' thing, or 'you'll move on without me' nonsense. It's possible she's even cranked up thinking that as long as you're not fully healthy weight-wise, she doesn't have to work on her own problems. Sadly, that's a really common one.
But in all of this sh*t from her, remember its HER crap and not yours! Part of me is just passive-aggressive enough to suggest resonding "Thanks for the TLC mom, I knew you'd come through!" and hang up. It wouldn't help, but good for you hanging up instead of listening to more. Sheesh - so sorry you're having to put up with this! Don't let it get to you though, the real support people in your life want you to be happy and healthy, and respect your choices. Crying is good - it clears the way for what's next instead of bottling it up. Crying here is doubly good since so many people have been where you are and understand that this is a scary thing you're dealing with. I'm trying to think of it as scary all at once, instead of scary every day--which my weight really has been when I see it's effects long term. You're taking a well-informed and reasonable risk to live a longer and healthier life, and there's no growth without risk girl. You can do this!

Eight months and a day ago, I woke up with diabetes, sleep apnea, crazy blood pressure fluctuations, tired, unmotivated and with low self-esteem...even though I didn't know it.
Eight months and a day ago, I followed through with a surgery that most people frown upon and have misconceptions about. They told me not to do it: "consider the risks" they said.
Eight months and a day ago, I told myself "this is the right thing to do, the decisions that make you think hard about are usually the ones that will impact your life the most but they are often for the best."
Eight months and a day ago, I put my life in strangers hands and trusted that in the end I would come out better than I was went I went in.
Eight months and a day ago, I thought it would be hard living the banded life: "what about all the foods I'll miss...what if I slip...what if I am one of the ones the band doesn't work for...what if...what if...what if... shhhhhh! I had to quiet my mind. The greatest fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. I was tired and lonely - I just didn't know it.
Eight months and a day ago, I arrived on the other side; floating on the awesome knock-out punch, unaware of the gut-wrenching pain soon to follow. It was worth it.
Eight months and a day ago, I was me - just not at my best.
Eight months and a day ago, my life changed dramatically. It's strange how it has all unfolded, I've enjoyed the victories both large and small. I've enjoyed getting to know and communicate with people who share this lifestyle with me; congratulating many, consoling others - while feeling the need to put some in check at times, but always enjoying the sense of community nonetheless.
Eight months and a day ago, I didn't think I would be a pound away from the lowest weight I've been since before I was a teen.
    Ain't the band grand?

Here I am just a mere 2.5 pounds from my goal and wondering where the heck the time went? We all know that the older you get the faster time goes by, but this is unreal and I'm having some kind of time digesting it all. A year ago today, I was diagnosed with type II diabetes, crazy blood pressure and severe obstructive sleep apnea (a few weeks later). I knew something had to give, because I had too much living to do to have to worry about pills, testing and the sort. To some, the band was an extreme way to thwart off these diseases; to some, I didn't need to lose the weight at all. My questions to them were: Have you ever struggled with your weight? I have my entire life. Are you judging my physical appearance as a guage of good health? Don't judge a book by it's cover, I have three conditions that could take me out of here any time. Have you had the displeasure of yo-yo dieting? I always gained back more than I lost. Do you have to prick your finger to get a drop of blood out every morning? It doesn't feel good and it's scary. Do you sleep well at night? I wake up several times caughing or having to go pee...again! Are you concerned about going blind, losing your limbs or having a poor quality of life? I do. Do find yourself wondering if you'll see your developmentally delayed child grow up and become an independent adult? I choose to live for her as much as for myself. The band was the solution for me and I'm glad I did it. I have none of those conditions or the guilt that my health would be the reason I left this earth before completing the most important job God has given me: Being a mother. I have such different outlook on life now and I'm happier than I thought I could be. Nothing is guaranteed...if you drive a car, any second could be your last. But I feel better about my chances of living a long and healthy life now. It all started a year ago today.

Losing weight with the band is not fast. Some do lose fast in the beginning but that is rare. Normal weight loss is 1 to 2lbs a week. There isn't any sense in getting upset, discouraged, or want to give up because you are a month post op or a few weeks and you haven't lost 70lbs. You didn't gain weight over night. It was a period of years of bad eating habits that caused you to gain 100 to 200lbs so getting it off in a short amount of time unless you are starving yourself is not going to happen. If there are those who lost weight quickly then good for them but it took me 3 years and of absolutely no cheating to get all my weight off. If you are a smoker and quit smoking it is even going to take you longer. Yes I know that from personal experience. You can't drop weight rapidly with the band unless you are some circus freak that lost 200lbs in a month. It's not a fast process but it works if you just allow it. 52lbs weight loss in a year is better then 52lbs of weight gain. A loss is a loss no matter how you lose it or how long it takes you to lose it. Be patient it will come. Rome wasn't built over night and neither is the road work here in Jacksonville done over night. More like a period of years. Stop weighing yourself everyday. If you can't wrap your head around the scale that your weight can fluctuate up to 9lbs because of Water weight then stop being a scale monger. Weigh yourself at your doctors office. The more you weigh yourself and get discouraged the more likely you are setting yourself up for failure. It's not a race and you don't have to be the first one to the finish line. Stop letting the scale wreck your day or month. Just do what you are supposed to and it will happen.
