Fast food?? No way I won't do it!!! One of the reasons why I am 90+ lbs over weight is choosing fast food over eating healthy! The best of the band for me is having to plan ahead and being ready for the next few days. No surprises, no chance to visit the danger zone!
    Good luck!!'

terry1118 got a reaction from Kindle in Anyone else having trouble eating post-op with others that don't?
I doesn't bother me. Cooking for my husband is easy. He's a body builder and eats what I eat, only more of it. I go out to eat w/my friends and never have any problems finding something I can eat and enjoy. I still love to bake goodies but now I just give them away instead of eating them. Watching other people eat things I can't have anymore is not a problem either. I don't crave things anymore and could care less about all the foods I used to eat. I don't know how long that will last (I'm 15 months post RNY) but I enjoy the fact that I control what I eat and not the other day around. :-)

Good advice. I quit caffeine about two months before my surgery. I also had a miserable headache for about a week and a half. Not even nsaids could ease it. If I had a headache for my post op recovery period I would probably have felt quite a bit worse than I did. There ARE reasons for everything your doctor tells you to do. If you trust him/her and want to be successful then follow them as closely as possible.

I felt the same way after being obese for 28 years (since my first pregnancy). I was miserable and desperate. A lifetime of being obese and eating badly was beginning to affect my health (metabolic syndrome, high cholesterol, back and joint pain, borderline diabetic). I went from a 2X/22-24W to a small/6P. I'm only five feet tall so 240 pounds made me look like a weeble (anyone remember those toys?). My weight has stabilized between 115 and 120. My only goal was to be healthy and be able to live my life instead of watch it go by. At best I hoped for a sz14 or 16. I never in my wildest dream thought I'd ever get smaller than that! It DOES work - how well it works depends on how well you do your part. Making real lifestyle changes and developing good eating habits are the key to keeping it off. Follow your doctor's instructions as closely as possible and you will be successful too!

terry1118 got a reaction from Ms ~V~ in IM SO WORRIED ABOUT MY HAIR FALLING OUT!
Google 'weight loss surgery' and 'hair loss' for some excellent explanations of your hair's growth cycles and how stress affects it (ALL stress - emotional AND physical, including rapid weight loss, dietary, and, yes, even surgery). Getting enough Protein, taking Biotin, using nioxin shampoos - all of these will help new Hair growth be healthy but none of these are proven to prevent Hair loss. If you are going to lose it you WILL lose it. Some lose a little, some lose a lot. It is temporary and will grow back. It's only hair.
When I was heavy, if someone told me I could lose 120 pounds by shaving my head bald (and it was true) would I have done it? Damn right I would've!!!! I'd have knocked you down on my way to the razor! Relax, and keep things in perspective. I lost my hair by the handful between 4 and 9 months. I took Biotin from 3 months pre-op onward, I met my Protein goals post-op and my hair STILL FELL OUT. At about 9 months it stopped and new growth began to show. I keep it short now until the new growth catches up. Now that I'm thin, short hair looks good on me - I may keep it like this! :-)

I would think if you aren't on painkillers it is fine. I didn't need any after the first 24 hours. I bet the docs don't want you to if you are still medicating.. IMO

Carbonated beverages forever. Sugar and simple carbs - white rice, white Pasta, white potatoes, white bread, anything made with white flour or rice flour (I don't tolerate products w/rice flour at all - they make me sick). My doc says nothing white is nutritious. Whole grains, brown rice, Beans, quinoa, and sweet potato are all acceptable and more nutritious. After eating Protein and veggies there's not much room for anything else anyway.
I have no problem staying away from sugar and simple carbs. Those were my trigger foods and are the main reason I became obese. If I avoid them I find I don't crave them. Also, I have no choice in the matter because I'm a dumper and it is a strong deterrent (dumping is one of the reasons I chose RNY). Rather than try to find a way to make them fit into my post op life, I'm choosing healthier options as part of my permanent lifestyle change. I love quinoa w/dried unsweetened cranberries, brown and wild rice cooked in broth, and a little sweet potato is so delicious it's almost like desert!

terry1118 got a reaction from Debbie3sons in Just wish I could make a decision!
During my research stage I was originally considering the band. But I read of so many people doing a band to bypass conversion, which made me drop the band option. My decision was clinched when I found my team doesn't even do the band anymore - too many complications and failures. They offer the sleeve and gastric bypass as choices. All my research pointed to Bypass as the most successful in amount of weight lost and long term success in people like myself, so it was the best choice for me.
Do your research and make the choice that is best for you.

Definitely talk to your endocrinologist. My pharmacist knew about it too (I talked to her about it while I was waiting for the new script to be filled). Maybe this is something not known to the surgical staff? They did ask me for a list of medications I was taking. My team is awesome about everything else.

@ gingersnaps; how did you know to drink 30 mins before and after your meal? Did your Dr tell you before you're surgery? Im just curious because I haven't got that information just yet. I have a mandatory education class on the 9th and I'm wondering if they'll tell us that day. Any who, Im just curious to know.
    Thanks

I had no help at all because I didn't need any. I made my husband go to work. I could walk, cook, use the restroom, and get in and out of the Lazyboy by myself. I didn't have a drain (not all doctors do one). For the first few days, especially while taking your narcotic medication, all you really want to do is sleep. I took naps and walked (necessary to relieve gas pains). I prepared my own meals and cooked for my husband. At four days I stopped taking the medication (it made me unsteady on my feet and my pain was almost nonexistent by then) and I began walking up and down my street. At my one week post op I was cleared to drive (you need to be totally off the strong meds for driving). My daughter had driven me to my appointment in my jeep. I drove home, but stopped first to grocery shop. Due to lifting restrictions my daughter had to help me with groceries. The day after my post op appointment I spent 1 1/2 hours cutting my lawn (self-propelled mower push mower). My second week of sick leave felt more like a vacation than recovery time. I walked, shopped, and read my book in the sun on my deck. I felt guilty being at home, relaxing. :-)

terry1118 got a reaction from MissVicky in What foods made you dump?
I dumped for the very first time (and only time, I hope) last Friday. I brought a little can of B&M baked Beans to work for lunch - maple brown sugar or some such thing. I never checked the sugar grams, which turned out to be 12gr - more than I'm used to. About an hour after eating them I started w/severe abdominal cramps, mild nausea, heart racing, cold sweats, and shaking, followed by a mad dash for the ladies room. I was in there 30-40 mins, suffering intensely. When it was over I was shaky and weak. That lasted for another hour before I finally started to feel more like myself. I'll stick w/my favorite black bean chili next time I want beans...
On the plus side, now I know I'm a dumper. It's a great motivator to stay on track. :-)
