CorvetteGirl got a reaction from Travelmego in New DM onset - a1c is 7.8 - please help
I had bloodwork done at my initial consultation last month. Prior to this my a1c was close to 6....I was borderline diabetic. The results of this current a1c were 7.8.
Immediately after I had the bloodwork before I even knew the results, I started a low carb high Protein diet, which I have been on for 4 weeks now. Already feeling much better and healthier.
My question is this: my surgery is scheduled for 7/22...that's less than 3 weeks away. Do I really need to worry about DM meds at this point? I've been eating so much better and I will be having super low carbs during my 2 week pre-op diet, which will begin Monday, 7/8.
Also, with an a1c at this level, won't it get even better and end up resolving itself after surgery?
This really has me kinda worried. Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

I feel the same way!! As soon as I got the call that I had been approved, I was jumping up and down! My friends in my Corvette club as well as my family are really excited for me and are very supportive of my decision to have this surgery.
...and YES!! I think we should all stick together since our dates are so close. Just knowing that someone is going through the same things and can be there emotionally means a lot.

How about a white chili? White ground chicken or turkey, some cannellini Beans, whole bag of baby spinach or bunch of cut up swiss chard, onion and garlic, and some cumin and other spices all in low sodium chicken broth. I would double the meat and only use 1 can of cannellini beans. This is super yummy!

Glad to hear you are doing OK!! Just remember to walk several times a day...that will help with the gas, and sip, sip, sip all day long!

You will probably want a small cooler for Water at the very least, so include some premeasured scoops of Protein in individual sandwich bags.
I would also throw some string cheeses in there and some turkey Jerky. High protein!

My surgery was 7/22 and I am doing really well! I've had a remarkable textbook recovery and I was able to get in all Water and Protein from the day I got home. No pain meds, gas, or nausea. I've been really lucky. Started 1 hour per day on the treadmill a week after surgery.
I hope everyone else is doing well also.

I'm not on Prilosec, I'm on Prevacid sublingual 30 mg, but I still had to take my Cymbalta, which is in a capsule. It's not time released, and I brought it to the hospital with me. The nurse broke open the capsule in about a teaspoon of applesauce and I had no problem getting it down. It took several bites to get it down, but it wasn't a problem.

CorvetteGirl reacted to wheeling in 1-week stall....REALLY?!
The main thing u have to realize is at one week out from surgery your body is in healing mode and not weight loss mode. It holds onto the weight for now. I had a week stall also. Keep drinking the Water and Protein and the weight will start dropping. Believe me. Down 47 in 7 weeks including the stall.

My calorie intake is between 800 and 900 a day. Protein greater then 70 grams. Carbs less then 50.

I would probably increase Water if you can. I personally have not ever increased my calorie intake from where it has been since I started solid foods.

Your question is probably best answered by a nutritionist. But, I do believe that increasing your calories and drinking more Water will likely help you to get over the stall. Since you are now burning calories, your body may be going into starvation mode and not burning fat. I'm 16 days post op and I noticed that my scaled didn't move yesterday or this morning (I actually gained a couple of ounces!). I go to see my NUT tomorrow so I will be sure to find out what to do at this point.

That's my guess, too. From what I understand and from my experience when exercise breaks down muscle, the body runs some Fluid in there for the regeneration process as the body rebuilds the muscles bigger and stronger. When it is done the Water drains out. Also, the muscle itself weighs more for the space it takes up than fat. Bigger and stronger muscles mean a 24/7 calorie burning increase.
Remember, fat is the enemy, not numbers on a scale.

I stalled at one week out too and I was freaking out! It's hard not to even though you know ahead of time that these things happen. It was also difficult for me to believe I would start losing again because that stall lasted several weeks! But I am 6 weeks out now and have lost 45lbs (17 pre op) so try not to worry! I know, easier said than done

First thing to do I stay calm, it is perfectly normal and natural to have slow downs or stalls along the way, stick to your plan and the weight loss will resume. You might consider tracking measurements, a lot of times when the scale isn't moving the waist is. Good Luck, enjoy the journey, it gets easier to deal with as time goes by.
