    Post-Op Tray Picture

My tray consisted go a bowl of broth, a jello cup, a protein shake, and a small glass of half n half juice/water. I ate none of it! The Protein shake made me want to vomit but it was milk based and I have not had dairy in 18 months. I told them I needed a soy based shake but they did not have one. I knew I should have brought my own. But doc wasn't concerned about me getting it in. He wanted the 64 oz of water in me everyday. He said protein would come. I had surgery on Monday the 9th came home on wed and I am at 40g a day now. I'm much better. But the tray at the hospital was pointless. I didn't even get the jello in. But I really was in no mood anyway
  2. The last few days have been tough. I have had a rough few days. Pain, difficulty breathing, and a few moments of WTH did I do to myself. The mental aspect of this surgery is just as tough as the physical healing. I heard it over and over, read about it but could not figure out the reason why. I figured that would not happen to me I have been in therapy for a few years I'm in a good place mentally. But the last few days I have figured out that my brain needs to heal as much as my body. So for those that are healing with me right now, know you are not alone when u have moments of doubt or struggle with just the day to day healing. This is going to be a long journey and I love the support I get from everyone here and wanted to know that I am here for anyone else who needs support. You can send me a message and I will answer if you don't want to express anything out in the forum. Sometimes you don't want to put yourself out there.
  3. So I go to my allergist today to get my weekly 4 shots. Well they were in such a hurry because their office party was at noon and I was there at 11:30 with 5 other people so they called us back 2 at a time. The 2 nurses got my shots and another ladies mixed up! They gave me hers and she got mine!!!!! They gave me a singular and a zyrtec. Wanted to give me a shot of steriod but I said no because one of the preop questions from anethesia yesterday was if I had been on steriods in the last 6 month. So they gave a scrip dose. I called my surgeon who sent me to the preop people. I am waiting on an answer back from the anethsiaologist (sp I know) if I can take the scrip or not. If I don't take it and have a negative reaction which will require me to use my Epi Pen surgery will be delayed a week. If I have to take the steriod it could delay my surgery for 6 weeks! I'm waiting for a call back but freaking out!!!!!! I'm already starting to feel crappy from the shots.
  4. I'm lucky enough to have a boss who had bypass little over ten years ago. He has been an awesome support for me and an encourgement. I can't imagine having a nosy nonsupportive boss. I'm so sorry!

    For those healing right now..

I don't have much issue with nausea or diarrhea. I had a patch behind my left ear put on before surgery by the anesteologist because I told him I get sick from the meds. It had a 4 day shelf life basically so I think that helped a lot. It hurts so bad to take a breathe because I feel like someone kicked my in the stomach. I had my gall bladder out in 2008, so my problem is constipation. As far as protein I have had to water mine down a lot. 7oz of soy milk and 5 oz of water to one scoop. I use body fortress vanilla from Walmart. I add in 1 teaspoons of lemon sugar free instant pudding. Covers up the taste of protein. Plus one scoop is 30g. Then I set a timer on my phone for 15 mins. Every time it goes off I take 2-3 sips and reset it. Before I know it it is gone and I have 12 oz of fluid in. I continue this all day because if I don't I will forget on drink my water. I think the best way to overcome the protein obstacle is finding the right one and adding a little flavor. For me vanilla is best because I can flavor it with the pudding and it was ok'd by the doc and nutritionist. Make sure it is instant and sugar free and just use the 1 mayb 2 teaspoons because it will make your shake thick if u use too much. Pure protein fom SAMs club is good. Vanilla is smooth and bth chocolate and vanilla are realtivly thin. It may look spendy but my boss -a roun n y success of 10 yrs- did the math and it is actually less expensive than buying the milk and protein powder and the cap is resealable. Decent taste and great fr on the go both preop diet and post op. Another thing I have learned: electric blanket. We do not own a heating pad. But we o have a small electric blanket. I sit in my big arm chair with the blanket wrapped around me and then a small thrown and pillow. The pillow is so my wiener dogs don't jump on my stomach. But the low warmth from the blanket has been great for relieving some of my pain and breaking up gas. I can pull on my left shoulder and make myself burp! I did it 20 times in a row last night! Felt 100 times better! Today it doesn't hurt as bad.

    December 9Th Sleevers

My friend brought chicken n dumplings for my family last night. He got an ass chewing from her about it. She didn't mind helping but set him straight on his spousely duties in taking care of me. He went grocery shopping this morning and got stuff to cook. We have all worked together for many years in the prison system so being open to calling one out on their faults is just something we do. He called his mom this morning and asked her to email him her recipe for tater tot casserole. And finally got my powerade zero after asking for it all day Wednesday and Thursday! He is better today and the kid is home due to an ice storm is being very helpfully Pain is slowly going away. Used the heating pad across my stomach and it helped a lot. Can't go out and walk because we about half an inch of ice. So try to walk around my tiny apartment just to get some in. But doing it

    Pre-Op Diets

Survey is dec 9th. I have a 14 day liquid diet started nov 25th. 3 protein shakes a day for at least 65 grams of protein. But my shakes are 30g so I'm getting in more than nough. I also have to have 64 oz of fluid. Half has to be clear water, the half can be black coffee, sugar free Popsicles and jello, and chicken broth, or sugar free drinks lie crystal light propel. Been a rough road but I am nearing the end and I did it! And I do mean rough! But I weighed this morning and I'm down 10 pounds.
  16. So glad I got that scary moment behind me. Still feel crappy after all the steroids but looking forward to surgery in 52 hours. Oh crap it's 52 hours away!! Oh I am so excited!!
  17. I am struggling with the liquid diet! 7 days down, a week to o. I have support and people telling me I can do it and how proud they are. Which is awesome! But I think I need to hear from those who are in the thick f it wth me right now. Can relate to my struggle. Anyone else having a hard time? I'm hungry an my brain is fuzzy.
  18. Ok so I had to take the steroid pills (15 total) and had to take with a little food so I wouldn't get sick. Doc was ok with that. Anesthesia said he will give me something in my iv to avoid a reaction Monday so I am still on! Bad news is I feel like crap now from the reaction to the shots and the huge dose of steroids

    Dreamsicle Shake

I have always added veggies to my shakes- spinach and Kale are best. I'm not right now because I'm in preop phase but after I'm cleared to I will again. It is a good way to get some extra vitamins in.

    December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

I am staying another night too. I want to make sure my pain is manageable on po meds. My right side hurts the most too. Doc sats its where they pull the stomach out and there are some internal stitching. The nurse told me most people stay 2 nights its rare to go home after one day. On a funny note, anyone do anything crazy on versed before the surgery? i apparently held my hands up and screamed "wooo im on a rollercoaster!!" while being wheeled to or. I also told my sister i thought i was drunk. Lol! anyone else? It's interesting because the people at my surgical group all look at me like I'm crazy when I say I'll need to stay ONE night! They said NO ONE ever stays overnight. I had spoken with the surgeon and told him I had issues with pain and pain meds not working and so he said he would do mine at the hospital and keep me overnight. When they called to schedule my surgery, I told her I was supposed to stay at the hospital overnight and she said that never happens. I was worried but when I saw the surgeon for the last time today, he confirmed that he was keeping me overnight to make sure my pain was controlled. They automatically send you home with roxicet but he told me he'd send me home with Dilaudid, which also caused the staff to look at me weird. Apparently at this place, I'm the oddball out! My doc said for sure one night might go home th next but previous patients have talked to of his all said he ends up keeping them 2 nights. Mine oe sent leave a drain in and that's why he likes his patients to stay one if not two nights. He told me one be but to pack for two. It's nice though my hospital - university of Missouri - has a whole bariatric floor. With nurses trained in bariatric surgery etc.

Been on liquid diet since 11/25 which meant no thanksgiving for me. I'm super excited! I have my bag packed ready to go! A nurse I work with said to pack gas x strips to dissolve on your tongue to help with gas and bloating. She had bypass 10 years ago and has kept it off. Ready to get started!
