  1. I have an update on my A1C. I had my PCP check it last week and unfortunately my A1C has risen from 5.9 to 6.6. I have been monitoring my blood sugar two hours after eating and I really isn't rising very high at all. So I will keep monitoring and wait to talk to my endocrinologist. I hope that I don't have to go back on insulin but if I do, it won't be much. I definitely don't want to risk my overall health just to get off insulin right???
  2. To say that my weight loss journey has not been remarkable is untrue. I have lost a total of 167 pounds since starting. I have lost 123 pounds since surgery. I started out on an insulin pump and so insulin resistant that I was pumping U-500 insulin. Starting last Friday when my fasting blood sugar was only 90 I decided to curtail insulin for a few days to see how my blood sugars would run without it. I am happy to say that the highest blood sugar reading I had since Friday was 143 and that was the highest. So I think I will simply monitor my blood sugar and see if I can kick the insulin habit for good. I can't tell you how happy my life is since I've gotten my weight under control. I had years of being out of shape and obese. Once all of the fat went away, I was left with literally nothing but skin and bones. So naturally it will take a while for me to get in shape but I am going to be realistic and realize that I am a 60 year old man with a heart condition so the 5k's are totally out of the question but I intend to start light weight training and some cardio and hopefully I will be a buff old fart some day.
  3. Super super dooper extra cute. You look fabulous young lady

    Calling All Sixties!

Hi am am 60 years old and I had my sleeve last July 24th 2013. I have lost a total of 168 pounds starting at 387 and I am now down to 218. I feel great and I am very happy with my success. I don't ever want to go back to being obese again and I am so grateful for all of the support I have received from both my family and this forum. Mark, Edmond Oklahoma

    Month 10 update! (Pics)

You are too cute girl. A remarkable transformation. I am so happy for you.
  6. I hope that you have the same results that I have. My surgeon is pretty amazed with my weight loss success. I am down to 218 from 387 in 8 months. He says that my weight loss is more in line with a person that has had a gastric bypass and not a gastric sleeve. But I have been religious in my accurately following dietary restrictions, recording my food intake and following my doctors orders. I have not been taking insulin for about 3 weeks now and my blood sugar has been 85 to 90 every morning when I get up. It does go up to around 140 during the day but my fasting blood sugar is perfect. Can't wait to see what my A1C is. I wish you the best of luck in your weight loss success.
  7. I have a follow up with my doctor in a few weeks and will get my A1C checked then. My Endocronologist and I have a very trusting relationship. He has confidence in my blood sugar control and my insulin intake. For the last 4 months I was only taking 1/2 of my daily dose of Lantus which is supposed to be only a insulin with a 12 hour active time. So i'm not really surprised that my sugars are normal. I will follow up though for sure. Thanks for the reply, Mark

    Getting Boney

I have the same problem, except it is not just my tail bone. It is also my hips and shoulders. I had to buy a really thick mattress pad so I would be more comfortable when I sleep. I feel bones all over the place that I forgot that I had. Wow what a deal huh.
  9. Here I am at my highest and my lowest let me know what you think. Starting weight 387 current weight 230. Just bought my first pair of 36 jeans down from a size 50. And still losing yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    8 months post-op (pic)

Wow, you are an inspiration to us all. You go girl
  11. I started out at 387 and at the time of surgery I was at 341. Seven months later I weigh 330. So I have lost 111 pounds and I am 5 pounds away from my goal. My surgeon is very impressed and has told me that the amount of weight I have lost compares more to a gastric bypass patient. They are going to feature me on their weight loss web site. Wow too bad I'm not good looking lol.

    Diabetes

I was a type 2 insulin requiring diabetic on an insulin pump pumping U-500 insulin. After surgery I remained on my pump for a few days but started having lows. My Endo told me to stop the pump and disconnect. After doing so my blood sugar was in the 130 to 150 range. He had me start Lantis two shots 15 units twice a day. I still had lows after my dinner meal so I stopped the afternoon dose. Now my blood sugar is in the 90's most of the time unless I do something stupid. If I eat a high carb meal like I did once (crawfish enchiladas) they bumped my blood sugar to 175 for several days. I finally got my blood sugar under control and I just have to be careful about what I eat. I don't know if I will ever get off insulin but one shot a day is much better than the expense of pumping insulin all day long. Good luck on your journey.

This surgery is nothing to take lightly. If you are not following your preop diet then your spleen will not shrink enough for them do the surgery laproscopily. You will end up waking up from surgery with a huge incision where they had to open you up to do the surgery wich will greatly complicate your recovery. Don't be a bone head, follow your doctors orders please. If you can't follow the preop how in the world do you think you can follow your lifelone meal plan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Gapapentin and the sleeve

I take it for diabetic neuropathy and I have lost over 100 pounds in 5 months. It hasn't slowed me down at all.
  17. I have a friend in Oklahoma City and for the life of me your poor sisters problems sound exactly like the ones my friend has. She has went through hell since her surgery and she has had the same symtoms. God bless your and your family and my heart goes out to you for your loss.

    Help a Noob out...Please?

I drank decaf for the preop portion of my journey. I continued for about two months. I then went back to regular coffee. No problems at all. I don't drink as much as I used to usually only one or two cups a day but I really enjoy them now as I do with everything in life. Good luck girl, you going to be fine.

    serious second thoughts

Great advise, I to have a clotting disorder and I had no problems post op also. The compression devices as well at the Lovenox I was on kept me protected.
  20. Thanks to all for the info and especially the nice comment. It feels good to hear that stuff when your 60.
  21. Hi, i'm almost six months out. My weight last year was 387 pounds, my weight on the day of surgery was 341 and now it it mid January and my weight this morning was 240 pounds. I have lost just a tad over 100 pounds in this amount of time which is fantastic. But my pulmonologist thinks I have lost too much weight but originally I wanted to get down to 225 but the way I have been losing I almost wonder if I will lose more weight than that. Have you guys started losing weight with a "desired goal" in mind and changed that number up or down after you had some sleeve time? Do you guys think that I have lost enough weight??? Let me know.

    Help a Noob out...Please?

Everyone loses weight differently. I personally have seen med lose weight faster than women. Not always but from what I have seen. Also don't let one persons weight loss deter from your journey. All peoples is different. I'm sorry about the original post. When I told your about my experience I was hoping to show you how it could be not how it always is.

    Help a Noob out...Please?

You need to read all of the information on this site for new patients. As far as the pain associated with the surgery it varies by the person. I had no none nata complications or problems with the surgery whatsoever. I went into the OR at 8:30, was in surgery for 1.5 hours because I was so big it was alot of work to do the sleeve. I was only in recovery for about 45 minutes and the nurse asked how I was doing and I said great so they took me up to my room. I walked every two hours, drank the 8 minicups of water every two hours and the took away my morphine pump because I didn't use it at all. I was discharged from the hospital at 9:30 the next morning and I went home. The only discomfort I had was one incision would pull a little when I rolled over in bed so I took about 3 doses of the liquid lortab. I is still on the bathroom sink and and need to throw it away cause it is just sitting there. I have lost 101 pounds in a little over 5 months I am off all of my BP, chlorestol meds and my insulin pump. My blood work is all normal and I feel great. I was able to get after it within a day after coming home from the hospital. I have not had any complications other than I now have low blood pressure. I have seen some people that have alot of anxiety about the surgery get a little whiney but truthfully if you had a hernia repair I would say that the pain and recovery from a gastric sleeve would be easier than that. Cutting the stomach down to 1/8 of of size it was is no big deal at all. Get your head in the game follow the rules and enjoy and your new body. It is worth it girl especially for you two lovely children. Good luck and email me anytime, Mark Thomas

Tell me what you have done to get 101 off in six months!!I have followed my nutritionist instructions to the letter. When I went to solid foods, I got out my trusty kitchen scale and weighed my food. I eat two ounces of chicken, or fish and two ounces of vegetables, usually zucinni or green Beans. I usually have a Protein shake with .5 cup milk and unjury protein in my nutribullet. Sometimes I put in a half a banana. For lunch, I have turkey breast and cheese on one half a piece of flatout flatbread and I warm it on a skillet, no fat. I eat three meals a day and a mid morning snack a mid afternoon snack and a snack before dinner. My Snacks are usually a weight watchers string cheese, or hummus and baby carrots and I do like detour Protein Bars from Sams club. I seem to eat alot but I rarely finish my lunch and Breakfast is easy. I eat a good dinner and most importantly I do all the cooking. My wife is elated. She has cooked for me for 33 years and she really likes the break and I don't mind doing it for at all. I am alway looking for recipes on the internet that makes chicken and fish new and exciting. I do alot of research on food and nutrition. I'm retired so I have alot of time on my hands and my weight loss journey has become a full time job. I love that I have lost the weight and feel so good and my wife is very happy to. Also I go to support group almost every week. It really helps me to stay focused. Email me anytime if you want to know more. Good luck on your journey. Mark
