  1. I watched the cooking shows constantly during my two weeks at home after surgery. My husband thought I was nuts. He kept asking me why I was "torturing myself". I told him that I always watched cooking shows and that I was not hungry. I found the shows comforting but did not think anyone else would understand n
  2. Ha, Laura, we have another convert!
  3. I am 15 weeks out. Sugar does not taste the same. Chocolate does not taste the same. Taking that first bite of chocolate used to give me a rush. The feeling on my tongue and all the subtle notes in the different kinds of chocolate....the smell. None of that is particularly pleasing anymore. I greive for that lost enjoyment, but I don't greive for the 54 pounds that have gone away forever. I also cannot tolerate bread, pasta or rice. I can have about one teaspoonful of any of those and that is it. I can eat crackers, pretzels and chips. I think dry is the key. I can also eat potatoes, including French fries. There are some flavors that seem more intense than they used to. Not unpleasant, just more intense. Food is definitely a different experience now.
  4. I told my friends, family and co-workers so they are not at all surprised when I order an appetizer and take half of it home. I also share. If I order a whole meal, I tell them to box up the sides and salad to take home for my husband. It really is true that most people could care less what other peoe eat or don't eat. Normal weight people sometimes only eat an appetizer. I did, before I got fat. Although we shed the weight quickly, we cannot shed the food obsession that fast. Just try to be as normal as you can and live your life. That is why you did all this, right?
  5. I am sorry you are having such a hard time. There will be plenty of folks who will tell you that they were paragons of virtue pre-op. I am not one of those people. I was supposed to lose 12 pounds in the six months prior. I lost 4. I did not diet until the last two weeks before. I did lose some before I started seeing the surgeon. Here are my stats: high weight 257, surgery weight 241, current weight 204. I was sleeved Feb 4, 2013. What I felt before surgery, hunger-wise, and what I feel after is totally different. I am not hungry anymore. Things don't taste the same. I cannot eat bread, rice or pasta. I cannot give up on this diet because it is physically impossible. I suppose I could eat nothing but potato chips all day, but even then, I don't think at this point I could eat enough to sabotage my weight loss. I could sabotage my health, but making good choices now is much easier. I don't deprive myself of a bite of something non-protein if I want it. But I don't want more than a bite. I am losing an average of 2.5 pounds a week. I hope you will not let your belief that things will not change keep you from moving forward. Good luck.

    When we're old...

I thought about that too and that is one of the reasons I decided against bypass. The truth is that not everyone eats slowly. I don't. I am about 15 weeks out and I eat at a normal speed. My tummy will not take more than about a half cup or 3 to 4 ounces of food at any given time. I know my limit so I eat until I am satisfied and quit, but never more than my limit. Since the elderly start eating less naturally, I figure that by the time I get there, my limit will be about what they seek to feed me. I figured that without the surgery, I would not get old enough to worry about going in the home.
  7. Yep. 15 weeks out and I am sitting here listening to my "whale song" now. Gurgles, burps, stuttering plops, whining screeches....I have stopped noticing most of it at this point.
  8. At one week out, I wasn't allowed to have anything but protein drink and other limited fluids, like crystal light and V-8. By the end if the two weeks, I was so sick of protein shakes that I cried. But I was getting in 60 grams of protein and 64 ounces of fluid every day. If getting there is your goal, you might consider a more limited liquid diet for a day or so to see if it helps you get it in. Eventually, the swelling in your stomach will go down and you will be able to tolerate more volume. Sounds like you are doing very well for one week out.

    Snacks

I also eat roasted edamame. If you are not cleared to eat nuts yet, they are a nice substitute.

    Quinoa, can we?

It is a seed, so best check with the NUT if seeds are not on your list.
  11. We are everywhere!
  12. Ha! I am one of those pickle juice weirdos. I remember when I was a kid, I would get reflux. I didn't know what it was because we are talking about the early 70's, but I would go to the fridge and take a swig of pickle juice and it would fix me right up.

    NSV....made my day!

I never thought my husband would worry about such things, but he asked me in all seriousness if I was going to dump him when I "got skinny". I just don't know how to handle questions like that. I am 47. Hooking up was not my style before I got fat so I don't see that changing. Plus, i waited until i was 39 before i found the right guy . I dont want anyone else. How do you convince your spouse you are not going anywhere?
  14. I have not had any problems with digestion since having it out. I could eat anything with no ill effects. Not everyone has that.
  15. I thought I was having a heart attack. It was pain under my breastbone radiating around my right side. The first attack I had was at night. My husband was at work and I was curled up in the fetal position panting for 45 minutes. I thought I was going to have to go to the ER. He is a nurse so when he came home I described the pain and he said it was probably GB. I had an ultrasound and they said no stones. Meanwhile I had horrible acidic diarrhea everyday and was unable to eat meat for months. I finally went back to the doctor and had a GB function test. The note I got from my doctor said it was normal. Another couple of months and I insisted on seeing a gastroinerologist. He asked why I was there and I explained what was happening and the "normal" tests. He looked at the results and informed me they were not normal. He scheduled me with a surgeon and once it was out, all my symptoms disappeared. I had mine done pre-sleeve and am happy I did. I am hoping the sleeve will be my last surgery.
  16. You look awesome! I know it is hard to see it yourself because you see yourself all the time. I cannot really tell when I look at myself, but I know from my clothes that I have made real progress.
  17. An update: it has been 21 days since I posted the below and I have lost another 6 pounds or about 2 pounds a week. The doctor says that is perfect.
  18. Saw the doctor for my 3 month check-up. I have lost 30% of my excess weight and my BMI is down from 46 to 39. I am no longer morbidly obese. My husband thinks I am a little goofy for celebrating such a thing. I told him I now aspire to be merely overweight!
  19. I asked the nut as soon as I advanced to softs how many carbs I should shoot for on 800 calories. I told her that at anything under 20, my brain shut down. She told me 50 was acceptable on 800 calories. I told her I felt more comfortable around 30 at that point. I am now at 13 weeks and at about 1000 calories. I have let up on myself with regard to carbs because I just cannot eat very much anyway and I am losing about 2.5 pounds per week. I have lost 30% of my excess weight and that puts me right on target. I am trying not to obsess and restrict myself to the point that I stress myself out. Some days I have 30, others I have 50. I am trying to be as normal an eater as possible.

    Slider foods

Most proteins I can eat 3 oz or so. Beans are the odd thing for me. 2 tablespoons and my stomach feels like it us going to burst.

    Just curious

I checked in at 5:30am on a Monday and went home at 2pm Tuesday. No problems. They made sure I could keep down protein drink and go pee and let me go home.

    Whats wrong with me ?

Are you really losing nothing or just very slowly?
  23. Most of us are eating less than 900 calories for quite a while after surgery. I ate no more than 800 on the week long pre-op. I will tell you the difference. Hunger. I thought I was going to starve to death on the pre-op. It was awful and some people have to do that for weeks. After surgery, I could eat 200 calories a day and not feel anything like that gnawing hunger. There would be no way I could have sustained the pre-op diet for a year. And as soon as I gave in to the hunger - and I would have - I would have put it all back on plus more. Many of us have repeated that cycle over and over. Taking out most of my stomach and taking away both hunger and the ability to eat more than a bit at a time was my only hope.
  24. I lost 16 pounds over 8 months while waiting for approval. Only 5 of it during the 6 months of supervised weight loss and only 3 during the week of pre-op. I did not exceed 800 calories per day with very low carb. My surgery was uneventful and I have lost 30% of my excess weight (31 lbs) in 12 weeks. No vomiting, no dehydration and so far no hair loss.
