mariamitani reacted to BigDaddyJoe for a blog entry, A day to celebrate!
I am celebrating 2 things today. First, I weighed in this morning and am now down 60 lbs! I weighed 214, down from 274. In not even 3 months! I can't believe it. Second, my doctor took me off of my blood pressure medication yesterday! This is huge! He had cut my dose in half a few weeks ago, and this visit was a follow-up to see how I was doing on the half dose. They took my blood pressure when I first got in, and it was 120/70. He was happy with that and was willing to keep me going on the half dose for now, until I mentioned that I've been getting light-headed when playing the trumpet while standing up. He had me stand up to take my blood pressure, and it was 108/70. So he told me to go ahead and stop taking it. He wants to see me again in another 3 weeks to see how I'm doing off of it.

mariamitani reacted to BigDaddyJoe for a blog entry, Obese again?
OK, I guess I jumped the gun a week ago when I said I was no longer obese because I weighed 227 and my BMI was 29.9. Ever since then, I've been fluctuating between 227 and 229. Guess I'm in some sort of a stall. Oh well, I'm not really stressing over it. I know I'm still doing all the right things and it will move when it wants to.

mariamitani reacted to BigDaddyJoe for a blog entry, I'm overweight! I'm overweight!
Subtitle: I'm no longer obese! I'm no longer obese!
I never in my life thought I'd be so happy to utter these words! I weighed in this morning at 227.0. That calculates to a BMI of 29.9, and I'm no longer considered obese! I was 227.6 yesterday, so I knew it would be a matter of days.
In less than 8 short weeks, I've moved from obese to overweight, have cut my blood pressure medication dosage in half, and stopped taking my prescription Prilosec. Next goals: I'm 3 lbs away from losing 50, getting off my BP med completely, and getting off my CPAP machine (AKA the medieval torture device). Another (perhaps less realistic) goal is to lose 7 lbs by May 13. May 13 is my 13th wedding anniversary, and I'd love to get down to the same weight I was then (220). It will be hard, because my weight loss has slowed this past week or so, but I know it's possible.

mariamitani reacted to joatsaint for a blog entry, What's In The Bowl B-i-t-c-h or Why Whey Protein Isolate?
The title is from an old nursery rhyme by Andrew Dice Clay.
    Little Miss Muffet
    Sat on her tuffet
    Eating her curds and whey
    Along came a spider
    Sat down beside her
And said, "Hey, what's in the bowl b-i-t-c-h?"

I see quite a few questions regarding whey protein and I'd like to share a few things I learned pre-surgery in preparation for my pre-op and post-op diet.

Whey is one of the fastest digesting proteins and the quickest way :-) to get protein shuttled to your muscles. Whey comes from milk protein and contains the full spectrum of amino acids needed to build muscle.

Whey comes in several forms - hydrolyzed, isolate, and concentrate, isolate being digested faster and more completely than protein concentrate.

    The Differences

Protein Concentrate: 70-80% pure protein and up to 5% lactose

Protein Isolate: Almost pure protein (90-94%) and near zero lactose and carbs, many people that are lactose intolerant have no problems digesting protein isolate.

Hydrolyzed Protein: Protein isolate that is broken down even more and is more easily absorbed by the muscles.

All three are good sources of protein and taking one over the other will not make a difference in how much muscle mass your body builds. It is only a matter of purity and the speed your body digests and transports the protein to the muscles.

Whey concentrate has less pure protein than hydrolyzed or isolate, meaning you'll have to take more whey concentrate to get the same protein in grams vs. isolate.

And speed of digestion and transport. Again, whey concentrate is the slowest, it is not broken down in the manufacturing process as much as hydrolyzed and isolate. Hydrolyzed=fastest, isolate=fast, concentrate=slowest. Is speed any great issue? I wouldn't think so. It's like the kids playing basketball, buying a pair of Jordans to improve their game. The difference a pair of Jordans makes for a nonprofessional athlete is so insignificant it's almost zero.

mariamitani reacted to tjloser for a blog entry, A really good NSV
The other day I was shopping at Goodwill and I was looking through some items and 2 older women were in the same isle. The first woman left and the second was pushing the cart so I moved closer to the clothes so that she could pass me. Well, when she passed she turned back to me and said "well, thank goodness your small" and she smiled. Can you believe someone actually called me small, WOW. I was really smiling on the inside to be called small for the first time in who knows how long. I still have about 50 #'s to lose so to be called small felt great. Here's to many more NSV's to come.

    KEEP MOVING FORWARD!

Well the scale is tucked away in the closet...I'm not saying I'm never going to use it but I think once or twice a month will be good. My clothes are falling off me but the numbers weren't moving fast enough for me......Mentally...I needed to see the number moving....not sure why....
