I just set up a new thread for those of us using Dr. Michael King in Oxford Ms! But it is under the surgeon tab! Oh and i am pre-op and on liquids right now! Will be sleeved in Oxford on 12/30! You are welcome to PM me or I can set up a FB PRIVATE GROUP for us! I will tell you that have done extensive research on surgeons, track records, etc! I have polled doctors and lawyers about safety! Dr. King has an impeccable reputation! I have 2 good surgeons in town that I could use but I wanted the most experienced and knowledgeable about this procedure, so I chose Dr. King! His staff is fantastic!

Omg i'm scheduled to be sleeved a week from monday and woke up very sick with a chest cold this morning! Surgeon said a shot of decahedron and Rocefin should do the trick! I took a flu shoot a few weeks ago! My chest is tight and i have a low grade fever! I'm so concerned this will delay my surgery!

Today was my first day of starting my 2 week diet, my surgery is December 30th. I did pretty good in the morning but by late afternoon, my head was killing me! I am so use to snacking on something but to cut out everything but what is on my 2 week menu is really killing me. I do find that if I stay out of the house it's not as bad, but as soon as i'm home..hello hunger pains...hello cravings!! My husband is a great support system, but he hates to see me hungry or suffering from a hunger headache...how did you guys deal with this?

No offense to most veterans on here, but sometimes we newbies would like to converse amongst ourselves. Which is primarily why I go to the forums marked BEGINNERS. Most people on this site are very helpful but some are just plain ol assholes. lol

I love your comment about it being the last form of acceptable discrimination I dont beleive that will ever change. If more people would just stop and think about putting themselves in someone elses shoes the world would be a much better place. There are those that do but most do not!

There are certainly those who worry about our having the surgery because they fear for us. There's another group that worry that it will affect our relationship with them in a negative way (usually the spouse).
The last group are those who have taken a secret comfort in the fact that we're fatter than them and don't want that to change. Some don't even realise it. I would imagine that sometimes it forces others to confront their own fear and procrastination about their own health when they see a friend or family member take this step.

Everyone else and their opinions can suck it.

Do you have any co morbidities? I had 3, and I led every conversation with those 3. The one that was the most effective was the fact that due to my out of control diabetes, I was losing the feeling in my feet and was in danger of losing them in a few years if I didn't do something now. That usually shut up any naysayers.

catobird1225 reacted to McButterpants in Post-Op Week 3 - I Miss My Coffee!
Three weeks ago today I was sitting in the hospital admitting area thinking to myself, “You can walk out of here right now and you’ll only be out $500.” I was terrified – terrified of the surgery, terrified of the recovery from the surgery, terrified of the future, terrified of my life post-op; I could go on and on. I was outright scared.
Today, three weeks later, I’m at peace. I haven’t second-guessed my decision to have this surgery (it wouldn’t do me any good anyway). I’m at peace with my new tiny tummy. I try to make sure to drink/sip slowly and take tiny bites that I chew, chew and chew some more. I consider myself fortunate – I haven’t had any complications, I haven’t had nausea, no incision pain, etc. I have had an uneventful recovery – I get tired easily, that’s about it.
I’m still on a pureed diet for the next week, then at weeks 5 and 6, I move to soft foods. I am really looking forward to having a Carb Balance whole-wheat tortilla for some reason! I’ve been eating a lot of pureed chicken salad (whiz up some canned chicken and add a little mayo and mustard in the food processor), a lot of fat free refried Beans (top with melted cheddar and add some salsa and Greek yogurt), and last night I had some pureed Wendy’s chili (it’s not as bad as it sounds). Breakfast usually consists of a scrambled egg and a Jimmy Dean turkey sausage patty (I can eat about ½ of each). I’m eating about ¼ cup of food at a time and I have to drink three shakes. It’s exhausting sometimes, calculating what time I have to stop drinking Water in order to have a shake or meal. I’m eating/drinking between 600 and 800 calories per day. I am amazed at how little food I need to fill me up; sometimes I simply lose interest in eating, so I stop. I downloaded an app for my phone called Eat Slower. You tell it how often you want to take a bite and your phone will make a sound or vibrate when it’s time. I set mine at 1 minute. When it dings, you take a bite. Pavlov’s dog, anyone?
I’m trying to walk at least two miles every day. Now that there is about 8 inches of snow on the ground, I have to move inside to the gym. I’m only allowed to walk on the treadmill, which is tedious, but I’m moving and that’s what counts. I’m looking forward to the release to the elliptical and maybe even some light weight lifting.
One thing I am frustrated with is coffee – I’ve written before how much I love coffee, real coffee, not Decaf. So, I have one cup of decaf coffee per day and it takes me about an hour to drink an 8-ounce cup. I really miss coffee with my breakfast – it was one of my vices pre-op and I really do miss it. Let me clarify - I miss drinking it like I used to drink it.
Some other things I’m working on:
    · I am still trying to figure out the signals my body is sending. Is it true hunger I’m feeling? Am I full?
    · I am trying to figure out my meal/shake planning and how to get in 80 grams of Protein.< /p>
    · I found that stopping drinking 40 minutes before eating and 40 minutes after works better for me (rather than 30 minutes).
    · I am doing the December Fitness Challenge on VST – Walking 50 miles this month.
    · I am working on some ideas for meals that are sleeve friendly and family friendly. My husband and son aren’t particularly fussy; I would just like to keep things as “normal” as possible. It’s hard being on puree right now, but they are doing OK.
    · I am working on keeping my emotions in check, not being so volatile…yeah, we’ll see about that.
Today was weigh in day...I'm down a total of 34 pounds total with 16 pounds since surgery. I'll take it!

This happened to me in 1987. I was in so much pain at work I finally caved in and went to go home. It was night shift on an early Friday morning before Memorial Day weekend. I walked half way out and my legs lost feeling and I grabbed a railing so I did not fall. I was taken to hospital and a neurosurgeon came in. Because of the holiday he couldn't even run the appropriate tests. I could not walk. I laid in that bed for 5 days before they did the surgery. Most painful surgery I ever had. By the grace of god I had lost some weight at that time and was down to 224 instead of my normal at that time of life of 250.
    Best of luck to you.

catobird1225 reacted to Webchickadee in The pre-op diet is NOT a punishment ... it's an opportunity.
Hi guys. I see a lot of you are struggling and worried pre-op about the pre-op diet. It is a HUGE challenge, but for me, it was an important one.
Exactly 1 year ago, I was in the middle of a 2 week liquid pre-op diet because my BMI was 55+ and I was self-pay in Mexico. Traveling from Canada meant that a reschedule would be A LOT of extra expense if my surgeon had to stop due to an enlarged liver mid-surgery. I had NO CHOICE but to follow the diet.
It also meant that cheating would increase the chance of complications and a longer recovery (or worse), all because I could not follow a 2 WEEK diet. Really? Here I was, about to take a seriously radical, life-changing step and get 85% of my stomach cut out permanently. But I can't follow a 2 week diet? That's crazy.
Post-op was going to be difficult for MONTHS, not days. So if I couldn't get my head in the game for the pre-op diet, then maybe I wasn't ready for what was going to follow post-op. I was terrified!
So I started the liquid diet. And I was STARVING. I was dreaming of all the foods I thought were leaving my life forever. Suddenly I didn't care that I had spent my life morbidly obese, I wanted my comfort back. I wanted to fill myself to bursting at every meal, like it was my last meal forever.
But I didn't break my diet.
Because for once, I wasn't going to cheat myself. It was time to grow up (I'm 43....) and take responsibility for my health, my future and my choices. A lifetime of justification, gluttony and excuses brought me to that operating room. Now it was time to face the music and get on with owning my future.
The first 3 days were HELL. That is when your body is detoxing from the carbs. You are using up the glycogen in your liver (to help "shrink" it) and it's screaming for replacement carbs to fill it back up. You can get through it. After 3 days it gets MUCH better. After a week you start to feel normal and more healthy than you have felt in years. You may be hungry, but you don't have the carb cravings anymore.
Most importantly, you feel IN CONTROL; and mentally and emotionally strong for battling your demons and winning. This is the first tangible proof in an unsure future that you CAN get through the post-op recovery and that you CAN succeed in losing the weight this time, FOR LIFE.
Whatever weight you lose during your pre-op diet is really inconsequential. What is important is what you gain:
    - Confidence
    - Emotional and physical self-control
    - The desire to succeed and overcome "impossible" obstacles
    - The knowledge that you are a WINNER as long as you do your best
Please don't look at the pre-op diet as a "condition" that your surgeon imposes on you (and some surgeons don't require it!). It is an OPPORTUNITY for you to test yourself, to help build your will, character and emotional toughness BEFORE you have the surgery.
It's like training for a marathon.....you put the blood sweat and tears in before the race to help you finish the race on game day. Without training and preparation, you will likely fail and you can get hurt really badly along the way!
Use your pre-op diet to work through your demons, build up your confidence and prove to yourself you can do it. If you "fall off the wagon" one day, the next day is a fresh start.
Aim for excellence. You owe it to yourself.
