bigtigger1010 reacted to Huntingnurse in Military/Reserves after surgery?
For anyone whos curious or following this - I finally cornered the nurse recruiter and got to talk to him. He told me hes personally seen a bypass waived and has heard of others. He said of course type 2 diabetes or heart disease is a no go - told him i have zero health issues. Now to just get into shape as the weight keeps melting off!!

Ok so I've been talking to recruiters and they think it may be waiverable - has anyone had any luck? Does anyone know someone who has had the sleeve and been waivered?

I was put on mushie foods right out of the hospital and was fine. By day 10 i could probably stomach what you ate but would not dare to put those foods in my mouth. One thing you need to know that nerves in our stomach are numb for a while so the signals we are getting might not be very reliable. You might be injuring the stomach without knowing it. U have a 11 month old so there must be some baby food around the house. My doctor is very lenient since he had me on mushie foods right away but solids are out of the question unyil my 4 th week. Any baked goods even longer. Be careful! Good luck

OP you got a myriad of opinions from posters and everyone speaks from their own perspective, some who are giving you a strict admonishment and some who think you're probably ok but don't repeat the behavior. We're all here trying to help and there are NO absoutely right answers, surgeons and nutritionists give different dietary guidelines. Common sense does come into play, you have a brand new suture line that doesn't need to be tested or having solids trying to work thru the seam.
Here's the other thing I want to say, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Psycholgically you may have lost your fear of eating things outside of your recommended diet, and this may continue to plague you as you move forward and affect your weight loss. After a while its a struggle to lose, this is the time you should be on the mark. Stock your cupboards with Protein powder and Soups so you always have something on hand, later down the line when you are cleared for solids, keep cheese sticks, yogurt or cottage cheese, beef jerkey, nuts...always have the right food handy if possible.

But the point is... get it down or not... u could DIE from it! The staple line is very sensitive early on & eating solids can cause a leak which is very serious... Also, u cant rely on ur "full signals" yet as some of ur nerves r cut during surgery and take time to come back together... so while its good u r getting signals... u wont know if ur getting them as early as u should b yet :-( U shouldve stocked all ur needs before surgery... obviously that doesnt matter much now... just do ur best to stay away from solids/ stick with liquids til u can get to the store... PLS b careful with ur tiny tummy, its fragile! Best of luck to u!

Laura I agree that diets can differ. But tell me how many diet programs that you've seen have a sandwich (PBJ as well as Cheese) within the first two weeks? Not to mention the chips and chicken nuggets...but bread is NEVER allowed that early out because it can swell and cause leaks.
And for those who feel a staple can't loosen because it's titanium....Ya they probably don't break in half or even stretch, the staples, but your freshly cut tissue does stretch and tear very easily. A leak isn't because staples didn't hold (unless done improperly which is unlikely) it's the tissue pulling away from the suture line and tearing a small opening that is the issue. The other issue is of course infection caused by foods that get stuck in a freshly sutured stomach like corn etc. Which is why we aren't allowed to have that early out. Skins are a real risk to a recently sutured stomach.

I just shared these responses with my surgeon who called for follow up today. I am four days out of surgery. I wanted to know if he was using "scare" tactics as you claim. I disagree with these responses. This is very dangerous and could lead to tears and leakage within the first three weeks. in addition you are only setting yourself up for failure with vsg if your wondering how quickly or what you can put in your mouth other than what is on protocol. Vsg is a tool not just a quick fix . It is as mental as it is physical. All of this was taught to me with the vigorous protocol I was put through prior to surgery.... Just sayin... Go ahead and eat what you wish ...I'm following protocol from the # 1 US sugeon in VSG. You are NOT doctors and are only fooling yourself if you think this ok. Love me or hate me.. Just callin it like I hear it!

What type of setting is the other doctor doing surgery in if not a hospital?
Is it an OR with access to blood and anything else that may be required if the surgery leads to blood loss?

I love the marbles/rocks ideas! I did something quick and not fancy but it helps to inspire me. Day of surgery I took string and measured around my stomach. I check out how much smaller I am with my 'belly string' every month. I plan on making a beaded necklace the same length when I'm near goal (it's long so it's going to take a lot of beads-expensive!) I'll probably wear it wrapped around my neck twice. Then I'll slip it around my waist to show anyone who asks how big I was-"out to here!" excited!!

I didn't realize you were the beholder of all medical knowledge about bands and sleeves. Obviously my surgeon did not realize this either and failed to consult with you. Thankfully I have my operative pictures and you can clearly see my inflamed spleen laying on my band. Seems like you might need to learn your anatomy a little better because as a nurse I can tell you it is absolutely possible for a spleen to get in the way especially when it swells. I'm so glad you gave me all your divine wisdom here so i guess that just erases everything I went through the past week because YOU have deemed it can't be possible. Are you kidding me??? I didn't post on here to get your approval or permission but obviously you feel the need to give your uneducated rediculous opinions. The fact the the sleeve was unexpected was because the surgeon told me he would not know what he could do until he got in there and if the stomach was to swollen he would only be able to remove the band. Again I must tell him to consult with you from now on because you have all the answers. Would you like to see my operative pictures, reports, hospital records? I wouldn't want you to be misguided. This surgeon did me an enormous favor by handling this but that is what happens in the medical profession when you are a NICE and UPSTANDING person in the field. I'm grateful for this surgeon and he has wonderful bedside manner as well as great operative numbers. He has even called me at home each day to make sure that I feel okay. I didn't say I had an erosion or a slip. I said I had a prolapse so you might want to do your research before you run your negative mouth and make an attempt to call me a liar. The only thing not right here is YOU. Worry about your own journey and I will take care of mine. What would I have to gain to make up a story and post it on here especially when I have already lost my weight ( not 20 pounds). You might want to respond to the other members that have responded to me and have gone through the same thing and let them know that they are lieing as well and that this experience didn't really happen to them. Feel free to not comment to me because i don't waste my precious life on negative and ugly people.
