Made me tear up too. As a mother and grandmother I understand about getting healthy for "them" but I think to overcome your fear and anxiety you have to decide to get healthy for "you". You are the one that has to live in your skin, no one else.
Getting the VSG is the best gift I have ever gotten let alone done for myself. I actually caught myself getting resentful that I waited so long to get it done (I'm 57 next month) but you know what? This is all in God's timing - He loves me and knows exactly what I need and when I need it.
    He loves you too :-)

yep, a lot (if not most) of us were raised to clean our plates. Wasting food is sinful even! My husband's family were very poor when he was growing up and you ate what you could when you could and as much as you could. Now that we're not poor well... it's really pretty dangerous to have that mindset. My family wasn't as bad off but my mother's family was so "wasting food" was a terrible thing to do.
I managed to break that cycle with my own children and grandchildren - they have to taste something new and eat a reasonable portion of their meal (I have had several try the "ok, I'm done. What's for dessert?" trick). Serving up appropriate sized portions takes practice too.
Being more than a year out, I don't have trouble gauging my portions nor do I have trouble throwing food away. It takes practice (hey, we get to practice several times a day!) and conscious eating.
I used to clean off OTHER people's plates too. Then one day I realized the truth that I am NOT a gabage pail. Sounds silly, but that is exactly how I was treating myself.
    Keep at it!

We should all treat our family members with atleast as much respect and kindness that we show total strangers. I think everyone is correct in guessing that your mother is being passive aggressive due to her concern.
Then again, we don't know your mother
Back off a bit, give her a few "Yes, Mama" and "I love you Mama" and don't fall into the argument traps that she is setting.
The decision to get the VSG and to radically change your life should be lauded! Embrace the power you have taken hold of and enjoy the ride!
    WEEEEE !

It sounds like you both have a little anxiety about the surgery and this is how it's coming out, but it will all work out. That is so nice of your mom to offer to help care for you after the surgery. I agree that it is really great to have some help post-op, even if you could get by on your own. The first night, I slept on the couch downstairs and asked my husband to come down during the night to check on me (just to make sure I was breathing...lol...which was totally irrational but it made me feel better!). He also made some of my drinks and gave me my meds when I was feeling really punky. I really appreciated it and would have done the same for him.
I would definitely work around your mom's schedule. She is probably taking vacation time to do this, which is very generous of her. A few weeks either way isn't going to make a big difference in your success, since this is a lifetime change.
By the way, my surgery got moved at the last minute, and my husband couldn't get off of work and my parents were on vacation, and all of my friends (who knew) were working. My husband dropped me off for the surgery and met me in my room many hours later (he was there when they wheeled me in). It really was no big deal that he wasn't there sitting around twiddling his thumbs while I was in pre-op, surgery and post-op. The surgeon called him after to tell him everything went well (I gave him the phone number while we were in pre-op).
Personally, I would take your mom a bouquet of flowers or pretty spring plant and tell her how much you appreciate her help and support during this time.
    Wishing you all the best!

If your lunch time workouts were exceeding your allowed lunch period is there any way you could start work 15 minutes earlier & stay 15 minutes later to make up for it? I hate to see you give up your swimming.

Don't sit at home feeling lonely. Hey, if nothing else, you have a computer and internet access. And how is the weather where you are? Here in KY the summer heat is over and it would be a wonderful time to take the children out to play or for a walk. If you live in a town or a city, I'm sure there is a playground you could visit too (and also meet other parent's of young children).
I know it's hard to reach out for friendship but the best way to meet friends is to be friendly. Makes sense, eh ? :-)

On a completely non-philosophical note, when I got the chance to go to college I was terrified of math. I had avoided it in highschool (took "Business Math"). I found an old book titled "Math Without Fear" and it walked me step by excruciating step through very simple math concepts and it even helped me really understand what algebra was all about. It gave me enough confidence in my abilities to tackle college level algebra, statistics, technical math, and even accounting (what a horrible 2 semesters THAT was !). I don't know if it's still in print but it is a great investment if you can find it. Good luck !

You have to get distracted by something more important than your weightloss. Right now I am in the midst of battling uterine cancer (surgery, chemo, radiation, etc.) and my weightloss is really REALLY secondary :-) So... I pray that you don't succumb to any illness but read what you wrote yourself - when you were on vacation weightloss was pretty far from a concern and by golly, you lost weight !
Live your life, enjoy your new lighter self, and be totally confident that you WILL lose weight because you WILL !

I could practically smell the gravy & meatballs while reading your blog :-) I think a lot of us older folk grew up knowing that wasting food was a sin. And Lordy, I used to be able to wolf my food down! I worked very hard with my children & now grandchildren so that they are allowed to enjoy good and healthy food but not be burdened by it.

My husband had stage 4 bladder cancer. It went to his lymph nodes and he was put thru much chemo. He slept a lot He took the medicine that keeps you from getting sick(vomit). This went on for 6 months and he has been cancer free for 6 years. Do what they say, eat no time to diet (he was 100 lbs overweight and nobody knew how sick he was). I cooked everything for him in cast iron with a tomato in it to leach the iron out of the pot. Not the tastiest but it helped to keep his blood counts up. He did not loose his hair. Everyone doesn't. You don't believe them at first, then you get very angry, then you accept it and fight like he*#$.
Best of luck and you are in my prayers.
