There are EXCELLENT doctors in Mexico. I hate when people have this uninformed opinion about another country.

Hmmm...the hospital I used in Mexico was cleaner than any US hospital I ever set foot in. I got more attentive care and better nurse to patient ratio than any US hospital I've ever been in. I had 3 doctors checking on me multiple times daily. My doctor keeps his patients in the hospital longer than US doctors......and, best of all, my doctor is the one who often teaches US doctors how to perform the surgery, is licensed in both countries and is President of the Board of Bariatric Surgeons of Mexico. My Mexican doctor was better qualified than any doctor I could find in the US. I went to him because of his qualifications/experience. The lower price was simply a bonus.
You had a bad experience in Mexico. Others have had bad experiences in the US. It's up to each individual to make the decision (do the research) for themselves.

Other countries do have good medical care - including Mexico. I have never heard of this surgeon and maybe the take away for all of us is that our odds of a good result are better by going to a surgeon with a proven track record and happy patients - regardless of the country.

I started my journey at 489. My first consult was back in Dec. of 2011. Between Jan and Sept, I lost 86 pounds on my own by just easting meat and veggies. Surgery weight was 403. I am currently at 279 and feeling great. No regrets! I will actually be volunteering at Fresno Kaiser to talk to people at the first counseling session.

I'm ok with all of that. I went into this eyes wide open, researched the hell out of this. My expectations are high, but that's because this is the first time I've jumped whole hearted into this. Yes I know I'll have naked issues until I can afford the thousands it will cost to nip, tuck, lift, and fill.... But I'm worth it. And a size 10 is my dream. Own it. You did this. Be proud

Wow, sorry to say it - but that was a little depressing to read. Not because I worry about those same things, but because I'm sad that all those things are "cons" for you. I can see how those things could be a shock to you, but I'm curious about your realistic expectations of the surgery. Did someone (i.e. your doctor) promise all those things would happen for you in the first 6 months after surgery?
I get it. It does suck that we may never have our high school bodies and skin back. Who the f*** cares? I'm not in high school anymore. This is real life and I see taking control of my HEALTH far more important than my appearance. I'm a girl, so of course I care about how I look. But I would rather think positively that "wow, I'm a size 10 and not a size 24 anymore" than "why am I not a size 2 yet?" Or "yeah, my skin looks like a deflated balloon but it's a reminder of the battle I'm winning." As for the relationship insecurities, chances are if your significant other thinks you may leave him then there were deeper issues underlying even when you were at your heaviest. To blame your weight loss is like saying your relationship only works when the lights aren't on.
I hope you can find a way to find a good middle ground, where you are happier with yourself and the amazing steps you've taken to take control. It could be a good idea to do some inner reflection so that you don't sabotage your weight loss down the road with negative emotions towards all the changes.
I wish you the best of luck in your journey!

    Wow ...
Not being able to wear my favorite fat pants is a downside ...
Having to take leftovers home from a restaurant is a downside ...
Believing everybody hates me not because I am fat ...
Uhhh ... there are other issues in that poster's life. But they are correct. Losing weight does not fix all of your issues. It would appear they thought they would.

I asked my family doctor that very thing. How could I be healthy eating only 500 calories a day. She told me that I am living off my fat. Duh!!! Why didn't I think of that. She said I would be perfectly fine as long as I took the Vitamins I was supposed to and the Protein.< /p>

I have decided to be very open with my surgery! It's opened up some very awesome conversations with friends and strangers. The VP of HR reached out to me because she heard I was having the surgery. She had a RNY 12 years ago and we talked quite a bit about it today. She said something that really stuck with me...as women we have to share our experiences and be the role models for those to come. There are so many people out there who don't have support...I can't wait to be like her in 12 years

you just need to do what is right for you. I've told everyone now and have it pretty public on FB and through my blog. In the beginning there were a few extended family I didn't tell just because they had a lot they were dealing with right now and I didn't want them to worry about me, especially since this is elective surgery. However, they now know & are supportive.
Just because it's right for me to tell people doesn't mean it's what everyone should do though! Just do what you are comfortable with.

I totally get the leg crossing. I havent been able to do that for 20 years. last week I sat down on my bed to put my shoes and socks on and automatically crossed my legs to do it and I could. I was able to do both of them and put on the shoes and tie them. I was so thrilled that I pushed myself harder during exercise. Even if the scale is not always making me happy these small things are.
Also I bought a pair of size 18 capris that I am able to get up to my hips. hoping by the end of the month I will be wearing them. I was a size 26 in march.

I'm so excited!!! As of my weekly weigh-in this morning, I am OFFICIALLY under 200lbs! Whoo Hoo! That sure has been alot of years in coming!
I have lost 58lbs so far. I was carrying around my all leather western saddle this past weekend, it weights 45lbs, and I was thinking how I can't imagine carrying that thing around all day! But I've lost that plus another 13lbs... it would be like carrying around my saddle with my cat in it! (Stupid cat!)
I'm also now able to wear shorts that I haven't fit into since college! They looked better back then, but that was over ten years ago!!!
I'm loving this sleeved life!!! Pictures below!

I had bought 20/22 pants a few weeks ago at marshalls thinking I would eventually fit into them. today was eventually, in fact 2 of the 3 pairs were getting big. I am less than 2 months post op. loving it. Also put a pic of me last summer next to one from this week and it was like night and day. never realized how big I was until you compare. It is wonderful. BTW i started at 26/28 in january.

This has been great, I have my date and am scheduled for March 13 with Dr. Aceves. Reading all the great info and making a list to pack, chap stick, riccolla and heating pad at the top. Getting excited and nervous can't wait.
