I agree with doxieville's comment on calories. I'm 3 months out today and have lost 43 lbs. I stay around 800 calories, low carb, high Protein but I have found that if I'm in a stall if I actually up my calories it helps. We also have to give our bodies a chance to keep up! Just be patient and keep putting the right things in and drinking all your fluids! I always have to tell myself, that I did not put the weight on in 3 months or 6 months so just be patient and it will come off!

Firstly you have done great for 5 1/2 weeks out!! It's not ONLY. Secondly for me I try to keep my calories around 600-700 and eat mostly Protein with a little veggie. I do have yogurt occassionally. I also have a Protein Shake for Breakfast so that I can get in enough protein.

Turn it around - if he was in your situation would you be supportive of his having a VSG (or any other life saving operation) even though it would use your savings?
If you would, then understand he feels the same way, accept it, let go of the guilt, and go for it

Despite my weight fluctuations, I've basically been wearing the same size 26 dress pants for work, for years. They have been getting way too baggy to the point where people have been telling me to get new pants!
Went to get a couple pairs today, and I fit comfortably in a size 22! I was feeling a bit of sticker shock and realize I'm going to need to begin shopping consignment stores during this weight loss journey.
    Size 22 and going down!

The amount you need is different when healing, and changes based not only on height but weight. My goal now during healing is 58g's (I'm 5 foot nothing by the way) which I round up to 60 for easy math per the NUT's instructions. But my goal after the weight loss period will be 50g's given a height of five feet and a weight of 110. I'd call your nut or doc and ask what you should be doing at this point...but also advise you do a shake at lunch if you can't eat.
Your comment about not making good choices so you chose not to eat at all kind of worries me about long term success. I think you should take a hard look at yourself and make a real effort to eat something for lunch. Skipping meals leads to over eating later (yes you aren't doing it now but you're building a very unhealthy habit). Skipping proper meals is what sends out body into bad cycles, feeling it needs to over compensate when we do offer it a little food, leading to....you guessed it, weight gain, even when we are taking in lower calorie bases.

nursing38 reacted to Lissa in Exercise Illiterate...help;)
When you are first starting to exercise, walking and very light weights are the best way to go, IMO. I started out literally walking up and down the hallway, then moved on to short walks outside. By 3 weeks post op, I felt like Rocky when I managed to walk all the way around the lake in our apartment complex. I also started with 2 pound weights and did 10 reps each of arm exercises once a day.
I moved on to the treadmill (yuck),, then the recumbent bike, and finally to the elliptical. I can do an hour on the bike or elliptical and will sometimes do 20 minutes on one, then 40 minutes on the other.
Pre-surgery I couldn't walk from my car to my front door and had major knee issues. Now, I can do anything I want or need to do, from wearing heels and dancing all night to doing physical work all day after a tornado rips through my neighborhood. Exercise does pay big dividends, whether you are an expert at it or not.

nursing38 reacted to ouroborous in Sex... Oh My God... Sex!
I really wanted to reply to this. Yes, sex is a LOT of work for a big guy. Ladies, all due respect, but most of the time, sex is all about US doing the work -- abs and core, legs, arms. If you're out of shape, as a guy, sex can absolutely destroy your stamina, and let's face it -- collapsing like a pile of Jello halfway through just ain't sexy. So we try REALLY hard to please y'all, but when you're that heavy, it just ain't going to happen!
Add to this the fact that fat converts testosterone to estrogen (yes, estrogen. Look up lipid aromatization for proof...) and you see a real "double whammy" for us guys emerging; not only are we expected to be nearly machine-like in our movements, with no reaction to the sheer strain and stress of moving 250, 300, 400 pounds of flesh around (not counting the lady!), but our testosterone can dip so low that we have a hard time keeping an erection (and what THAT means, ladies, is that ANY distraction can make "it" go away -- slowing the rhythm, changing position, even just worrying that "oh god, I'm gonna lose it!" And when you're panting and wheezing and worried about having a heart attack (yes, contrary to urban legend, people can and do regularly have heart attacks or strokes during sex), that's a pretty serious distraction. So, for a heavy guy, sex really ain't much FUN! We want to do it to keep our lady friends happy, and sure, it FEELS good, but it also feels like we're gonna die, it's a race against the clock with whether Mr. Happy will keep playing along, and a lot of times those negatives outweigh (heh) the positives.
Now, switch to skinny sex. My muscles are MORE than capable of hauling my carcass around and doing ALL sorts of interesting positional things. Sure, I sweat and breathe hard in the throes of passion, but my heart and lungs are healthy and I have a ton of stamina, so I'm not worried some artery is going to explode. And best of all, because my testosterone MORE THAN DOUBLED without drugs, just by losing the weight, my libido is crazy -- that one hormone makes ALL the difference between just being caught up in my head and worrying about how I'm going to "perform" and getting utterly, absolutely lost in the moment. And that is so insanely sexy. Apparently for both of us!
So yes, ladies, if you want a better love life, definitely lose weight, but get your guy to lose weight too. You will NOT regret it!

I'm really sorry to hear all this. You shouldn't compare yourself to others, though. A lot of people who have had this surgery are much heavier than you, and the more weight you have to lose, the faster it comes off. I have slowed down dramatically since I got to around 202. I have been losing a pound a week myself. At least you are losing though, right? Also, you mentioned you've been working out a lot - you are probably gaining lean muscle mass. You may want to try eating a little more to give your metabolism a kick. It works. Hang in there. I know it must be hard not to be frustrated after 2 surgeries. Catch up on some sleep and give your body and mind a rest. Stress doesn't do anyone any good.

I am losing weight (as per the scale) very slowly, BUT have lost lots of inches, and clothes...especially pants, are hanging off me. WTH?! So it seems like a case of "six of one, half dozen of the other"!

You have to remember that clothing is made based on measurements, not weight. I'm sure you have friends that visually look a certain size and then when you find out what size they wear, you're surprised.

I'm still able to wear some pants that I wore before surgery and while they are a bit loose now, I have to admit that they were pretty tight before...as in I was probably wearing pants that were 1 to 2 sizes too small. So looking at the whole picture, I'm actually down about three sizes. And that's definitely a celebration! Any correlation to your jeans? Congratulations on 70 lbs lost!

I have officially reached the century club! I plan on posting pictures at my 6 month surgery anniversary which will be October 3rd. If anyone is contemplating surgery or getting ready to have this surgery, I would say do it. Yes, it is hard. Yes, you must commit to the whole process. Yes, there are always setbacks, but isn't that what life is about? It is these experiences that make us stronger as individuals. Did I have complications ? Yes while my team felt it was minor ( a small hematoma), it hurt like hell for 2 months, but I prevailed. What has change for me? I no longer have prediabetes or high blood pressure. Alas, I have high cholesterol still, but mine is a genetic condition having 2 of 3 genetic markers for heart disease. As an aside note, the Boston Heart Lab checks for this if you are interested in your own makeup. So as for the cholesterol, well..some cards you are dealt you can't change, but you can manage them more easily with this surgery...exercise, diet, and medication. The nice part is that I have freedom. I can do things now without thinking. For example, table or booth? Who cares, I fit in both! Daughter has a function at school in the auditorium? No problem...sit where you like...you'll fit. Amusement park you say? Sure...I love to ride! Oh no...can I fit? You betcha I can! Plane ride? I have myself covered...no extra fees or seat belt extender for me! Anyway...I am on my way. My journey is only at my half way point. I still have a long road ahead, but I will only go forward, one foot in front of the other until I reach my destination. Until then, I have you all as company. Thank you for your support. You all will never know how much it is greatly appreciated and definitely part if my continued success! Each and every one of the people who respond to my posts, I thank you...positive or negative..I know that I have a band of sleeve family out there to support or give me a dose of reality...see it really is like a family..good and bad. I feel like a caterpillar in my cocoon not ready to emerge yet, just still transforming into a butterfly. One day, I will emerge and be as beautiful on the outside as I feel on the inside!

You need to fill out FMLA paperwork, so that your job is protected just in case things don't go as planned and you can't come back in 2 days. I think a week is way to soon but since everyone is different .... just be careful not only is your body stressed but adapting to a new way of eating is a major change.
