My story is a simple one, no doubt identical to so many others; was really fit in high school, nobody ever thought to educate me on nutrition so gained pentuple the average amount when I went to college which led to major depression which started a vicious cycle of endless weight gain. Lost my 20s to obesity, though I accomplished a lot (MA, world travel, career) I remained stunted in personal growth. Then one day I suffered a terrible weight related public humiliation that served as my last straw, as soon as I could show my face in public again I made the phone call, less than a month and a half later I was being wheeled into recovery after my VSG.
I'm a slow loser, I am 3.5 years out and have yet to make it to goal, at just over my 2 yr mark a bunch of things happened in my life and I became depressed and lethargic and stopped exercising. Over the next year I gained back about 25 lbs, not to mention how flabby and weak I became by not exercising. At my 3.25 yr mark I got back on the wagon, diet and exercise, and now at 3.5 yrs out I have shed the regain and am back working on original weight, I am about 40 lbs away from personal goal, 19 from surgeon's.

The funny thing is that at my heaviest I would have said that the weight I am now would be just about perfection and what would eventually be surgeon's goal (150) would be a dream come true. My goal at date of surgery was 130 lbs; as I've got closer to that goal though, I keep moving the goal back! lol, I think we all do that. I know that I will have about 10 lbs of skin and tissue that will need to be removed and I know what my mother and grandmother weighed in their 20s so I feel reasonable in settling on a pre-plastics final weight of about 130, with a post-plastics weight of <123 (I'm only 5'3").

Would I do it again? YES. Would I have done it sooner if I'd had the money or insurance? YES. If someone had told me my future when I was 20 would I have done it when I "only" had 50 lbs to lose? ABSOLUTELY YES. Though it is okay to mourn all that my obesity cost/lost me, there's no use in crying over spilt milk and having this surgery was the best decision I ever made.
