B-52, I like this way of thinking.
New way to think of excercise.
A tip I was told was to make exercise an appointment. Schedule it just like going to the dentist or doctor. It is just as important.
Got up at 5 a.m. walked on treadmill slow at first, holding on tight with eyes still shut, eventually woke up and walked a bit faster for 30 min.
This winter is kicking my butt, so tired all the time and so cold, -27 degrees this morning. Uff Da

I recently came across an article online titled ‘5 Things We Can Learn About How to Eat by Watching Kids’. Interestingly, four of the five tips are topics I often discuss with my clients undergoing weight loss surgery. The five tips were as follows:
    1. Be picky - only eat your favourites
    2. Slow things down
    3. Keep it simple
    4. Eat with your hands
    5. Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full.
Whilst eating with your hands is one I tend to skip, the other four tips are very relevant.
    1. Be picky - only eat your favourites
Have you found yourself scouring the supermarket for the perfect fat free, sugar free but still deliciously tasty chocolate? Dark chocolate of course, so it still provides all the antioxidants. How did that search go? I’m guessing you’re still searching.
There is no substitute for the real thing and that is not only true of chocolate, but a whole range of foods.
After weight loss surgery you have less space to fill with food, so it makes sense to fill it with food you enjoy. Sure, you need to make sure you are eating a balanced range of foods to get all the nutrients you need, but you should be doing this with food that is pleasurable.
Tania, a gastric bypass client puts it very simply: “I do what the French do, I eat everything I want, but I eat in small portions."
    2. Slow things down
Eating too quickly and not chewing foods properly are both problematic after weight loss surgery. Many of you would have learnt very quickly what happens when you eat too quickly – discomfort, pain and possibly regurgitation.
Have you ever told your child to hurry up when they are eating? Well perhaps they are the ones that have it right. I’m currently feeding a nine month old baby. I happened to watch the clock last night as she ate. dinner took us about 20 minutes. Perhaps these children are on to something!
It should take up to 20 minutes to eat a small meal. If there is food left on your plate after this time, discard it.
Concentrate while you are eating. Sit up straight and avoid slouching. Set aside time for meals and avoid doing other things whilst you are eating. Put simply, slow down.
    3. Keep it simple
Many clients of mine will have heard me say that there is 21 meals in a week, so they don’t all have to be perfect.
Do you need to serve meat and three different coloured vegetables every night? No. Do you need to cook a full roast meal every Sunday? No. Do you need to know exactly how many grams of carbohydrate you eat each day? No.
Sure, you need to ensure you eat a balanced range of foods and your dietitian can guide you with that. But if you can’t be bothered cooking is there a problem with throwing a tin of tuna and some pre washed salad leaves in a wrap for dinner? No.
Keep a supply of simple foods on hand that you enjoy for those times when you just need to throw something together. Here are a few of my favourite staples I keep on hand to throw together a whole array of meals:

    § Eggs
    § Tinned tuna or salmon
    § Lean sliced meat
§ Oven ready/microwave ready frozen fish
    § Baked beans
    § Pre-washed salad leaves
    § Avocado
    § Mixed frozen vegetables
    § Tinned corn
    § Tinned 3 bean mix
    § Tinned beetroot
    § Diced tinned tomatoes
    § Wholegrain/multigrain crackers
    § Wholegrain/multigrain wraps or mountain bread.< /div> 4. Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full.
Have you noticed that a child can eat almost all of a sandwich, pushing away the last two mouthfuls announcing that they are full? Our instinct is often to tell them to finish what is on the plate, remind them of the starving children in Africa, but is this doing more harm than good?
Children have an innate ability to interpret their hunger and satiety signals, but we often encourage them to override this. What does this teach the child? To eat whether you are hungry or not.
I have spoken to hundreds of people undergoing weight loss surgery and many were told to finish the plate, or were not allowed to leave the table until they were finished their meal. Many have also said that they have felt truly hungry for some time.
To successfully manage our weight we must be able to interpret the hunger and satiety signals our body gives us. (Satiety is the feeling of satisfaction after eating.) No matter how healthy food is, too much of it is not good for us.
Do you need to spend some time following surgery re‐learning how to listen to your body’s signals? Perhaps you need to watch a child eat and follow their lead.

i am so sorry about your father.....
yes you can get yourself on track.....no need to dribble drama (that you are ashamed etc) leave that BS at the door GF.......you are a beautiful woman inside and out......and we all know it.....i should hate you because you are so pretty.....but i dont
so right now, get back in the saddle.....RIGHT NOW
whats done is done and never to come back or be returned to us to do over
eat good foods and in the allotted amount the dr advised you and exercise (go walk if you are stressed or take a hot bath to unwind some) or yell or vent...
food only gives that instant food gasm for a moments time and then we feel like sh*it afterwards......so dont go back to dieting traps......you are not on a diet.......eat to lose weight....eat to live your life.....and understand its a process.....make yourself well...start today..start now.

backpacking5 reacted to B-52 in Weight loss is slow...............getting discouraged!
30 days after surgery, had my first fill, which did absolutely nothing.......then I gained weight....and was heavier at my next visit, after a fill, than I was at my previous visit 30 days earlier...because the band was not doing what it was designed to do...not yet anyway...at that point it was still up to me and my own will power...just as it was before the surgery....
2nd fill, things evened out 50-50....did not gain, and lost very little....still fighting hunger and eating more than I should....3rd fill did the charm for me.....THEN the weight loss began consistently.....
All you have is a band installed...but it is not necessarily "Activated"...normally, it takes a few months and a few adjustments to get it working as it should....took me 3-4 months, and 3 fills...some are more, some much less....everyone on the point finds their different "Sweet Spot...Green Zone".
Everyone looses on the pre-op diet...that's the point of it...

backpacking5 reacted to gowalking in Signs that you're full. How does your body tell you it's enough?
Forget about full. If you are full, you've eaten too much. Think satiety..which is when you are no longer hungry. Eating slowly lets you know when you've reached this feeling and it's something you will learn over time. Some folks have 'soft stops' which can be any number of things..a burp, a runny nose, a feeling of pressure in the chest...it's very personal. Just know that this process of re-learning how to eat...and how to listen to your band does not happen my magic and you may go months before the band starts to work for you.
I can only give you my experience which is that one year post banding, I can eyeball portion sizepretty well at this point...I choose healthier options as often as possible, and at home, I have a scale to keep me from inadvertently overeating. Oh, and I use myfitnesspal...not as often anymore because I know what I can and can't eat, and what the calorie count of most foods are at this point but I recommend all these tools to use along with the band.
If you take away anything from this post, know that the band is not a cure-all, it won't stop you from overeating or making poor choices...you still have to put in the work. But...if you are smart about how you eat, and listen...really listen to your band, you will have success in your weight loss journey. Good luck!!

Finally hit that 50 pound mark this morning! I had my lap band surgery at the end of July. Thought I would share my first set of progress pics. Can you tell a difference? I still have lots to lose, but happy about this start.
(And sorry in advance, not brave enough yet to share full body with face.)

Lets face it...it's called a "WORK" Out....if it was easy, then what's the point? It's hard for everybody....when I look around at the gym, everyone is sweating...
But it can be rewarding, small at first, but rewarding just the same...and that's the addiction....
There are days I wish I did not have to go to work...and the same voice is telling me to call in sick....but then, if I don't work, who's going to pay the mortgage? And if I didn't pay the Mortgage, I would not have a nice home...so there are rewards to everything we do, but it requires some effort....
Or, we can sit on the sofa in front of the TV and hope it all happens magically....maybe someone can do it for us...

I try to get to the gym everyday, which means I get there 5 times a week....
Just want to say...EVERY TIME I go, there is a voice telling me today is NOT the day, everybody has those days and perhaps today is one of those days for me NOT to go to the gym...it's Ok, you can go tomorrow....you just don't have what it takes today....I'm too tired, my knee was a little sore last night, there's a full moon....whatever.
Everyday I get these thoughts...right now, it's 5am, it's 6 degrees outside, my car is a ice cube..... my wife is still asleep in our warm bed...and that voice is telling me I should not go....I am crazy!
BUT...everyday when I do go, 5-7 minutes into my run, etc, those thoughts vanish....every time! And I always feel rewarded I did go....
This has not changed in over 3 years.....EVERYONE has doubts......

Lake walk! Snowing lightly here and sub-zero temps on the way -- figured I'd better get out while the going is good. It's a three mile walk with a friend whose little dog keeps us at a breathless pace. Plus we have lots to discuss so the talking helps the exercise, too. I always feel great afterward and yet there's still some old lazy voice tellimg me I don't really want to go. I'm learning how to shut that down and seek joy and health instead. A complete rewiring takes time, I guess, but I'm getting there. Here's to it!

to gain actual/true weight is to eat more calories than one burns off...

3500 calories is a pound ate or drank.......and if you dont know or believe, but
if one loses inches, they are losing weight regardless of what the scale says or dont say..

scale goes up and down all day long... last but not least, understand, you wont lose it all over night...if you cant be positive now, what will you do when it does really slow down?? give up? bit* , p*iss, moan???

NO, you keep doing the right thing and let the band, or any wls work and we help by doing our part

I have to say that I'm apalled when I see these folks eating with such relish even when they know every mouthful is killing them. It reminds me of who I was...and hopefully will never be again.

and if you dont go to the gym or (walk due to 60 feet of snow on ground)
be mindful of the cals in vs cals burned off aspect
