Some of the responses in this thread are down right saddening. Starting weight does not matter with the lapband if you're truly dedicated to making a lifestyle change. I am living proof of that and I will put my numbers up against any Sleever or Bypass patient. I mean no disrespect to anyone but what the hell difference does it make if he weighed 450 or 250? Weight loss is weight loss and it only matters in the end if you've adopted a lifestyle change. Without a true lifestyle change then any weight loss using any method is just temporary and prone to eventual failure.

Sure the Band takes more work and more patience but it is certainly just as effective as any surgery if you put the work in. Some people such as myself thrive on the extra work or extra attention the band may require. I have learned so much about myself in these last two years then I have the entire course of my 46 years.

Christie's 100lbs in the first year is incredibly successful given the fact a "typical" band patient needs to go through a series of adjustments before the band reaches its maximum potential.
In closing I will quote Dylan...."Don't criticize what you can't understand"

Wow, two months and you're an expert? You remind me of all the naysayers who tried to talk me out of wls. They were all wrong too.
And what's with all the band deniers? Me thinks you know not what you speak of.
100 lbs for a guy who has little time to workout and spends much of his time at brunches fundraisers and political events I respect what he's done.
And bubba tikvah I'll take that bet?

Didn't have a lot of time today but did a quick mile run on the treadmill at the Y while my daughter took her swim lessons. I contemplated not trying to do it but a good friend said moving is moving no matter how long or short. Felt better after I did it so I am glad I followed through!

Today was one of those days.....went to gym ay 6 am....while in the locker room changing my clothes, I decided I just did not have it today.....so I spent a good 45 minutes in the sauna (think I fell asleep)....then 30-40 minutes in the HOT whirlpool...shave and shower...fresh clothes.....ordered a Protein shake from the juice bar before heading home....
No workout....after going at it day after day sometimes you just have to shut down....and that's exactly what I did...and still doing...
That was at 6am, now it is 3pm and I feel a little guilty and I'm ready to go back..but perhaps it is better to do nothing today....
    It happens....

The type of weight loss is not necessarily determined merely by the amount of weight a person has to or chooses to lose. Those who have said they are shocked that he chose the lapband to lose his weight I would question why you would be so shocked?
Many of us that chose the lapband did so to avoid the re-routing of our guts, and the life long malabsorptive issues that come along with many of the alternative WLS.
The lapband can be and is a very effective tool for weight loss and in my opinion a greater tool for life long weight maintenance over the other surgeries.
There are many today who are being banded on top of their gastric bypass because they have gained weight a year or more after their surgery and need further assistance. The same can be said for those who have the sleeve, and have a regain of weight over time.
The lapband is the only adjustable WLS that while it is made for life long implantation it may also be removed, reversed or revised to another surgery.
While it is true that weight loss is faster with the other surgeries, it may not be what the doctor ordered for Mr. Christie or others.
He's done an amazing job with his weight loss as far as I am concerned, and everything else (about the man or his political position) is irrelevant in this forum.

This is what I meant to post:
It's a tad presumptuous to say that Christie is not on this forum. Anonymity is a valuable and significant part of this forum. Did you really think that he would his real name? Very few of us here use our full names. Some don't even have a photo. Anonymity gives us the security to be honest. Even if Christie does not participate, I'm sure there are others here who have struggled and continue to struggle with their weight. You are only two months post- op - you have a long road ahead - hopefully one filled with continued success and good health. But it's unfair to label anyone of us a failure because of your idea of weight loss.

Wow, some of us can really get really get our high-horses, can't we? 100 pounds, a failure? Come on! And from a weight loss surgery support forum? I cannot even imagine the stress involved in being such a public figure with WLS; I give him (and others) kudos for that alone.
It took me over 2 years to lose 70, and believe me, if it had taken 3 or 4, I'd still be trying to lose -- with the help of my band. That's the great thing about the band ... It continues to work ... And it's one of the reasons I chose it after a lot of research. I wanted something that was not drastic, and that did have a short-term sweet spot in case I couldn't achieve such quick loss stats as other posters here. But that's just me.
In our own way, as long as we are getting healthier, we are all successes.

Everyone loses at a different rate. 100 lbs in a year is great no matter what type of surgery you had. That's 2 lbs a week, more than that, you're probably losing muscle mass

He started at over 400 pounds? Wow...he either photographs well, or he carries his weight well. Not that he ever looked svelte, but he certainly didn't look over 400 pounds to me.
100 pounds down in a year is awesome, and I'm sure he is feeling fantastic and more mobile.

impressive performance especially given the goldfish bowl environement he frequents
I've seen considerable number of criticisms of him based on nothing other than the political differences between him & the critic....which of course isn't material to the LWS issues.
If he can do well given the obstacles he faces on a daily basis....it gives *me* more encouragement too.

The fact is, he lost 100 pound in a year. How on earth could that be considered a failure? He may not be at a normal BMI yet but he is far from the BMI he started at.
Doesn't matter why he did it, he took that step and no matter what one thinks of his politics, I'm sure he feeling much better. He has greatly increased the odds that he will be there longer for his wife and children.
Time will tell if he loses more or just keeps it off.
That statement applies to all of us.
Good luck to us ALL! Lord knows its not easy!

100lbs in a year?! That's awesome. I hope he can loose the rest of his weight. We know how hard it is. I'm not a fan of his, but I certainly hope that he is successful.

My Dr. ask me to take a few small sips and see how that feels.
This last time I sat up with the needle still attached and sipped,
    waited,
thought it might be too much so she took a little out,
    sipped again,
Water went down fine so we both thought that was good enough for now.

I'm just curious to see if any other WLS person has had their spouse change his/her eating/exercising habits along with you, and benefitted by becoming healthy along with you? My husband has lost 50 pounds over the last nine months. He exercises 6 days a week now (we work out together on the weekends) and he eats a whole lot less food..... doesn't rat second helpings, never Snacks anymore, and making great food choices. He has been my rock throughout this past year and as happy as he is for me..... I am as happy for him and proud of him!!!!

I LOVE this comparison! It really gives you a visual and a "feel" for what that 33 lbs feels like. So no that you put it that way, no wonder I feel so much better these days! Can't wait until I lose a couple more cinder blocks!lol...I should feel like a million bucks by then! Good job, Bandista and thank you for sharing!
