Great post, I believe we (society) as a whole have come to a place where we just can't or better yet won't take responsibility for our own actions and need the justification from others for our poor choices/ actions. I am new to this I had surgery back in February but I followed the "plan" now that said it's tough to be a saint in the city and I've done screwed up bad! But at no point did I "ask" if it was okay to do so. In the future may I ask some of the wonderful people here for advice like I have in the past ? Of course. I just don't know if they are trolls or just ignorant folks but I've seen some really bizarre questions here and that's okay too, if you truly need to know if it's okay to eat the triple bypass bacon jalapeño and nacho cheese burger in between two donuts and wash it down with a soda 2 days after surgery the gracious folks here will help you! That's my rant and I'm sticking to it! Good luck to everyone on their journey!

Good discussion and j think we have 2 issues going on.
I am going to respectfully disagree with some of you in that cheating is a choice yes but that doesn't necssarily mean it not cheating. In my view there's no such thing as accidental or mindless cheating but not all choices are good ones and cheating is (are?) those choices that are bad for you, whatever that may be under your regimen.
For me, eating bacon without nitrites, avocados, cream are not cheats and not bad choices. Thats not true for everyone. Same for sodas, LL embraces those with a straw and thats not cheating for her. For me, cheating is eating stuff I have decided are not good for me but am choosing to do so anyway. I'm cheating on myself with a bad choice, like a brownie or donut. (Donut - slobber yum yum). Or a long island iced tea. Yes I have and no its not a good choice but normally I have planned for it, its deliberate and I accept the fact that it will set me back, and I'm not gonna feel bad. But then I can't grouse about a stall cuz I knew what was coming.
OK second issue, posting. I very much agree that lots of people are posting for confession, accountability, to see how others handle things, to get encouraged away from the dark side or even to get spanked back onto the straight and narrow. They are owning it. I think these are fine, great, helpful.
And then there are others who seem to want approval to do things they know are bad choices, to disregard Dr plans, to binge, not exercise (OK I don't exercise too much and I have reasons but I know its still a poor choice). What makes me laugh though is when these people making deliberate bad choices want approval and fellow travelers for their poor decision choices and then get all crazy when approval isn't given. I believe those people are going to have a really tough time being successful. Make your bad choice, I'm OK with that, but don't expect to get my approval for it.

chubbsey1 reacted to LipstickLady in Is it CHEATING or is it a CHOICE?
Every day I see new posts from people who feel guilty about "cheating". Some are coming clean about it or are embarrassed about it and amazingly enough, some seem to be bragging or feel empowered by it.
    But is it really cheating?
I assume that most all of us are adults here. I also assume that most of us have had, are about to have or are researching WLS. We should know the dietary plan at this point (or there would be no "cheat"), and we should also know the risks associated with eating off plan pre or post op, yet every day people ask if what they are doing is OK and/or look for justification for their actions.

What in the world? It truly makes me scratch my head.
To me (and this is just MY opinion), there is no CHEAT. It's a CHOICE. I chose to have this surgery. I chose my surgeon because I trusted his skills and his knowledge. I chose to have sleeve over bypass or band. I chose to limit the amount that I can eat and drink by drastically altering my body. I chose to eat right 100% of the time on my pre-op (yup! not lying!) and I chose to eat right 90% of the time post op until my doctor said I was free to do otherwise.
I think it's FINE to ask your surgeon/NP/NUT questions if you think you are ready to do anything other than prescribed. I think it's OK to question their answers. I do NOT think it's OK to ask a bunch of strangers on an internet forum to justify choices that aren't good ones-- especially internet strangers who are or were in the same boat as you.
If you want to eat and drink at the same time, more power to you. If you want chocolate and bread and shakes and fries, have at it! If you lick a dorito or chew it up and spit it out, good for you (not really, but...)
I love the "coming clean", I love asking for support, I love asking for coping ideas. I just ask that you take a moment to ask yourself if you are truly cheating or if you are making a CHOICE to do something you should not.

You'll get a hundred different answers and all of them are right if it works for them. My surgeon and his procedures have NOT been the norm from the get go compared to others going through this process. My surgery started off with only a one day fast before surgery, followed by outpatient VSG (I was home within a couple of hours) and my NUT supervised diet seemed to progress faster than others with me being able to eat/drink (only no carbonation) at 5 weeks out. I actually had to step away from the boards for a while because it was personally driving me insane to keep comparing myself to others. I've had everything under the sun to eat/drink (in moderation because of my sleeve) while traveling the globe since two months after surgery. I do keep Proteins first, try to get in at least 60 grams daily, and limit any bad carbs/fat. Do I have cake, alcohol, chocolate... if I want it...sure!!! In very small amounts and not every day. I slip. For me this isn't a diet...it's my life. Forever!! I want to be healthier, but I also want to live!! And for me that includes not denying myself things I want. The sleeve helps me control it. Now in saying that I know the honeymoon period is going to end. I know it will be harder. And I know I'll have to work for it. But I take one day at a time and do what works for me as long as it is under my doctors guidelines. I had surgery November 26, 2014 and have lost a total of 96 pounds since the week before surgery.

No, it seems more like a lack of willpower. Yes, we All had issues with the way we ate before surgery, that is why we got to where we were. The surgery is not a magic pill that will automatically make you "skinny" or change your mindset towards food. It is something you have to fight for. The diet plans given to us by our Drs. And NUTs. are a comprehensive plan to help with healing both our physical and mental outlook. The early stages are to help with not only the healing from surgery, but, also to start to detox our body from the sugar dependants we became accustom to. If you stick to the plan to a T you will find that over time you will change the way you look at all food not just the "bad foods".
It is a process and not an overnight fix. It is a battle everytime you have a craving. Eventually the cravings become fewer and farther apart.
Nobody on here is saying they are perfect, but, are truly worried for your safety and success on this journey. We have all slipped up one way or another and have heard of tragic things that happen to people who have not done "the right things" so we pass on our wisdom to the newbies so they do not fall into the same situations. Don't take their advise so defensively but with an open mind, one day you to will be a "veteran" at this and pass on your wisdom to the newbies then and this will be one of those situations you can pass on first-hand experience about. Good luck, be stronger than the temptations, you can do this!

Thanks for this info. I'm not quite a year out and thought I was done with shakes, but I'm starting back to college this summer and there aren't healthy options (for the most part) on campus so on my long days I'll need a shake. I bought a tub from GNC and it tastes great but this brand looks a bit cheaper with more Protein to boot!

chubbsey1 reacted to Babbs in Fear of STRETCHING Sleeve!
It doesn't stretch. The swelling from the surgery goes down and you are able to eat more without feeling as much restriction. This is a gradual effect as months go by.
The part of the stomach that is left after surgery is the less "stretchy" part. You would have to eat to the point of vomiting every day for a long time to get your sleeve to stretch even a little, unlike the pouch from a bypass that can stretch quite a bit over time with overeating.
I never took 45 minutes to eat, never chewed my food to a paste, and now can drink 16 oz of Water in about 10 minutes or so. And I still have great restriction at 8 months out. Keep in mind the amount of restriction you have depends on what you are eating. The denser the Protein, the better restriction you'll have. Things like crackers, Cookies, and chips will cause little or no restriction. If you keep to the rules of the sleeve ( no drinking before or after eating after a certain amount of time, measuring your food and stopping when satisfied not full, Protein first, then veggies, then if you have room starch) you will have restriction even after your stomach has healed and loosened up a bit months and even years down the road.

I noticed it post-op, but things eventually returned more to normal for me. Of course, long-term, simply changing what you eat will cause your taste-buds to gradually adjust as well, so some things I use to enjoy are still too sweet, but I chalk that up to a change of eating habits. I'm rather certain if I went back to eating Reeses PB cups I go back to loving them in no time. Not going there...

I typically avoid the posts on this website where people are ranting at each other. I feel like handing out a virtual cupcake to everyone and saying, "can't we all just get along?"
Seriously people, the awesome thing about an online forum is you get to pick and choose what you read and engage in. This is the main reason why I prefer this over attending the support groups at my local barriatric center. I can't control who attends those meetings and then I'm stuck with them for an entire hour.
I sign on to Barriatric Pal daily. Why? Because I know staying connected is one of the best things I can do to insure I am successful in this journey. Time and time again I read posts from people who have strayed from the site, gone off track, gained weight and come back for support. I come on this website and read these posts daily. IT'S MY CHOICE. I will be a year out from surgery on April 16, 2014. Yes, sometimes it is annoying to read the same posts over and over again about stalls, Hair loss, loose skin, food intake and Vitamins. Guess what? One short year ago I was the newbie starting on this journey anxious whether I would succeed or not. I was full of questions and eager to reach out to others as nobody in my "real" world had weight loss surgery.
I work with a lot of people in 12 step recovery programs in my profession. Bill Wilson, one of the founders of AA, early on grew frustrated when he reached out to fellow alcoholics to help them, but often those men he tried to help went on to drink. He felt like giving up and one night his wife Lois, reminded him that HE was no longer going out and getting drunk. The act of giving back to others helped maintain his own sobriety. I remind myself of this. I choose to give back and help newbies on this site to help myself. I read your posts and it reminds me of information I learned long ago and "forgot". It helps me stay on track. If a post annoys me, I can choose to ignore it.
I help you to help me.
I'm going to eat a real cupcake now.

Chubbsey1, I hope you feel better.
