When is the last time you've had a physical? Lab work? Something to think about. I know myself since losing a lot of a weight I have slacked on my lab work. Been about 8 months now since my last labs. I am cold and tired a lot lately myself so I wonder if I may be anemic. Time for labs

Ballermom reacted to nelady in QUESTION: If U had gastric bypass & U had 2 do all over again verses the SLEEVE would U?
I had the gastric sleeve done 5 years ago and am now having the RNY revision done on 7/22. I wish I had done the RNY the frst time, but I was terrified of the surgery and thought it might be too drastic. I di lose about 40 pounds, but it crept right back on after 4 major surgeries and now I am back where I started. I am still worried about the RNY but this time I will go through with it. It has to be better than carrying all this weight around, especially with the peripheral neuropathy of my feet.

I was reading another forum last night and a woman just got back from a seminar with her bariatric doctors they told the people that the sleeve is great, but also said that after about the five year mark the restriction goes away and hunger is back all the way and most need to be re-sleeved!! Thoughts?
So I've been thinking about it all day, and have done some poking about a bit and some reading..
    http://www.medpagetoday.com/Endocrinology/Obesity/40490
And I found this an interesting statement coming from a doctor at a bariatric conference...
“Doctors are constantly concerned with durability. The gastric sleeve gained instant popularity because it is quick and easy to master, and is a less difficult operation than a bypass,” said Dr. Coon. However, he stressed the need for surgeons to learn all of the facts, perform extensive prep work, and communicate effectively with each patient before deciding whether the sleeve gastrectomy is appropriate.
“With new surgeries, outcome is always hard to predict,” he said. “If five years from now it still seems to be a good operation, then it probably will continue — and then again it might fail. Regardless, people will continue to promote it or disagree with it.”

Here is what i think. Statistically, people experience some weight regain 2-3 plus years post WLS. We have lots of anecdotal stories to go with that and i believe it happens with all the surgery types.
Those of us that keep a positive mental attitude (ie don't just give up, all or nothing thinking, or beat themselves up too bad) generally find a way to whittle those pounds back off, or stop the regain at some sort of "reasonable" amount.
It is the story of nearly woman over about 40 that i know... they battle with at least some weight (maybe it is only 10#, maybe more). It is part of life, we must accept it and have a plan for tackling it.
I was happy at my goal of 158. I was estatic when I got to 150. I didn't plan to get to 140, but once I was feeling better I started liking it. I have regained up to 145# and while i am okay with it, i liked it better 5# lighter. If that little feeling of disappointment creeps up - I pull out my collage of before, during and after. I realize that even if I wind up back at 158 somehow, I still look and feel damn good!
So, I think this battle of the 12# or 20# or whatever is really really normal and we can all support each other in ways to work it back off... and more importantly support each other in learning to not let it be too distressing either.
If I keep gaining I will likely be one of those posting this type of topic... you have my permission to throw my own words back at me.

Today marks 6 years since I went into surgery and came out a changed person. I am so much happier than I ever thought I'd be. Life is better. I am stronger. I am smarter. I went into the hospital 6 years ago weighing 301 lbs. This morning I got on the scale and I am 122 lbs! I have a small frame and I'm 5'2. To me, I feel perfect. I am content. I am happy. The road here wasn't easy. It was emotional. It was hard. It was even lonely. ... But today, It is no longer hard, it's not emotional and I'm never alone. Happy Re-birth to me!!!

I've had both and yes the VSG does remove hunger. I never felt hunger for the first few years. I did get it back around year 3, but it's gone again since I have revised.

Yes I've started the process. I have a edg to have on Nov 6th. Once they confirm the GERD it's off to have the revision that's the only thing needed to do atm the Doc said. I had called the insurance company they said all they need is a doctors necessity and then we're good to go. Sorry it took me do long Baller mom

Ballermom reacted to DSwitcher in RNY to DS revision
VSG to DS is not correctly listed as a revision, but a completion of a dual procedure. Many had the first surgery (3 or 4 possibilities) and then had the DS, later, to complete the surgical procedure.

Many, including myself, hoped that the sleeve, alone, would be sufficient. I followed the VSG for three years, and found that maintenance and avoiding re-gain, was not metabolically possible. While I will be what is considered, a "lightweight," I have allowed myself to eat regularly to have some rest for my metabolism and to weaken the starvation re-action, a theoretical construct, that has some believers and some detractors.

Completion with the DS will provide the malabsorption necessary to correct the insufficiency of the Sleeve alone, according to my Drs. Those who chose the "Virgin DS," having both parts at the same time, are also finding success in maintenance. The stats are definitely in the DS favor.

    Hi Kalimomof3
Thank you sooo much for such good advice!
Yep, I won't put this off cause I'm getting more determined to make it happen.. My hubby is supportive but already plan a work event that day before my appointment. I asked him to take vacation when I'm having surgery he said yes. He supported me through a tough knee injury too.
At first, I thought this is a way different type of surgery. Major surgery but, it has the commonality of getting Healthy in it.
