t2dav reacted in 9 month anniversary of band removal!
Well, I have just logged in after being away from the computer for a bit, and am shocked and disappointed at the replies to my story. The only reason I shared my story was to help others who may be having problems with their band. I have nothing against the lap-band, I was just quoting what my doctor said to me. Of course, everyone has a different opinion, and I support free speech, but this post was meant to share my story, not start online fighting. The story is mine to tell, and it's also mine to remove. I will be taking this post down and deleting my account. It was never meant to be this.

The rapid weight loss is due to the band, regardless of how u look at it. Traci is telling her story very eloquently and for that reason is appreciated. Some members of this forum either work for the band companies or they stay confused. I wish you all the best.

I'm no exercise guru but in order to get the procedure done I have been attempting to exercise and believe it or not A LOT if things count as exercise, not just the gym. Take for example bowling, swimming, and even cleaning house or working in the yard! So I started to focus on the things I like and increase intensity as I go

I remember when I first committed myself to go to a gym....Before I was banded, but right after I was Dx'd with Diabetes.......
So there I was, a (fat) 56-58 year old man, sweating like a pig on the elliptical.....I'm looking around and checking out the staff members...you know, the super fit young girls who wear those super tight spandex workout clothes that say "STAFF" across the back in big yellow letters.....
And you know what was going through this dirty old man's mind when I was looking at them???
"Man..I sure hope those young girls know CPR, and they weren't just hired because of their looks"
No exaggeration...it really worried me....that's the shape I was in both physically and mentally.....

I got a lapband and took up running. I now also do spinning and strength training. I lost over 100 lbs and have stayed at a bmi of 21, I did not just lose wight, I am truly thin and fit. People marvel that I was ever big.
My hubby got a band and did not exercise. He lost 50 lb and has put 25 back on. He is still "obese". Five years later.
You don't have to be as hard core as I am. Just walk. But it really helps and it's even more important for maintenance.

I'm not sure if I read the right one, it was by the huffington post. But I felt like it portrayed WLS in a negative light, by saying most people who receive surgery could end up as drug abusers and a percentage commit suicide... Very scary

I had the same requirement but the BMI could go down after my intial appoinment. They want you healthy and learning your new way of eating before you have this done. I think the 6 months of preperation was great. I really learned alot. Take in all the advice you can get from you Dr's and support groups. I just got banded on Jan. 4th.
    Good luck to you
    Cassie

I had to do 6 months of diet for insurance too. They did not go on my BMI after dieting, but I only lost 7 lbs in the 6 months. I get banded on the 17th and have lost 9.5 lbs on the pre-op diet. I am down 34 lbs from my heaviest.
    Good Luck, keep us informed

So if you begin to take botoin before the surgery you think it will help? I'm very worried about this part of the surgery. Thanks for the responses!

    Hi Jennifer
Yes.. I still have cravings and I do still have my treats now and then but in smaller portions.
I find living with the band VERY easy.
Here's some advice that I've talked about here before specifically for new bandsters... please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
Try and take it one day at a time. Don’t compare yourself to others. Don’t go into this journey saying “I’ll never be able to eat this or that ever again.” I can eat ANYTHING except rice and apple skins and no carbonated beverages. Follow the guidelines given to you by your doctor.
Remember… take tiny bites (the size of your pinky fingernail) and remember to finish what you have in your mouth before you take your next bite.
When I was losing weight I checked in every month with my family doctor to get weighed and measured. (I don’t own scales) I also attended two coffee groups for people that were banded.
These things really kept me motivated and on track. I still check in every month with my family doctor to get weighed-in and I host two coffee groups. For me support from fellow bandsters plays a big part in this journey.
Back when I was banded my doctor suggested something called the “Egg Timer Distraction”. It’s kind of difficult to explain here but I’d be happy to email you the .pdf document. It REALLY helped me with “head hunger. I can’t tell you the number of people in my lapband coffee groups over the years that have said how helpful this “trick” has been in dealing with their head hunger.
Also, I’m not really a “diet” book type person but I recommend you pick up two books.
Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat: How to Break Your Eat-Repent-Repeat Cycle – by Dr. Michelle May
I had the pleasure of hearing Dr. May speak at a conference when she came to Toronto and her book and guidelines really work well with the lapband journey.
    The second book is:
The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite – by David L. Kessler
Please feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions and also if you would like a copy of the “Egg Timer Distraction Document”.
