    Hey BariatricPal Members!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Hey, it’s okay if you’re not Irish! Anyone can still use it as an excuse to Celebrate. Or, you can celebrate the start of Daylight Savings Time, the beginning of spring, or a new chapter in your weight loss surgery journey. Why not? Here’s what you’ll find in this newsletter to give you a few ideas and food for thought.

Green Foods You Can Eat Get Moving This St. Patrick’s Day Spring Break: Home and Away
Hope you have fun with this newsletter and whatever comes next in your journey! Have a wonderful spring, and see you on the boards!

    Sincerely,
    Alex Brecher
    Founder and CEO, BariatricPal

    Green Foods You Can Eat
St. Patrick’s Day revolves around green food and green beer, at least for many of us in the U.S. who just like to enjoy the day without worrying about being Irish. There’s nothing really wrong about green food, as long as you have no problems with artificial colorings from food coloring, and calories from green cupcakes, green beer, corned beef, and green Irish soda bread.< /p>

Okay, there clearly are some problems with these St. Patrick’s Day choices if you’re trying to eat healthy and lose weight! There are plenty of other ways you can get your green on – err..in – you! Here are a few greenish ideas that will keep you on your weight loss surgery diet. Feel free to experiment with the ingredients and textures…the only right way to make these is however works for you.

Green frittata: grated zucchini mixed with egg, a bit of cheese, and herbs. Try dill and a Greek yogurt topping, or use oregano and basil as a seasoning and top your baked frittata with Tomato sauce.

Pesto: Use a food processor to blend basil and arugula leaves, lemon juice, pine nuts, black pepper, and olive oil. It’s a little high in calories, so just use it as a condiment like you would with Peanut Butter or hummus. It goes great on chicken and salmon.

Green dip: The name’s pretty vague, and that’s because you can put pretty much anything you want into to. Make the base out of pureed cooked peas, broccoli, and/or lima Beans, and you can even add a little avocado for creaminess. Add spices and herbs like garlic, onion powder, cilantro, and cumin, and use it for dipping – what else – green veggies such as broccoli florets, green pepper strips, and celery.

Green smoothie: The sky’s the limit. Try any combination of arugula, pear, avocado and kale for a deep green color, and add Protein with soy milk and Greek yogurt. Flavor it up with berries, ginger, half a banana, or even mint leaves.

Cucumber rolls: Peel a cucumber and slice it thinly lengthwise. Spread non-fat cream cheese and dill, or feta cheese and sliced green olives, and roll up your cucumbers.

Mint frozen yogurt: This may be the healthiest fro-yo you ever have. Blend and freeze Greek yogurt – try no sugar added lime if you like – with almond milk, your choice of sweetener, and a few fresh mint leaves.

Get Moving This St. Patrick’s Day
Any good holiday starts with a chance to burn a few extra calories. What better way to get energized, work up an appetite, hang out with friends and family, and – oh, yeah – lose a little extra weight than to get moving?

    Hop in a 5K
There’s no shortage of road races around the country on St. Patrick’s Day and the weekend following it. If you’re in shape for one and your doctor thinks it’s a good idea, sign up! Most let you sign up online a few days in advance, or you can register on the spot an hour or so before starting time. Grab a friend to join you or make a friend on the starting line, and get ready to have fun for 3.1 miles!

    Hold Your Own Event
You can get moving in other fun ways if you’re not quite ready for a 5k or you can’t find one near you, Hold your own race series with any kids and other relatives who are around. You can hold events like the 1-block run, relay races where you team up, and contests to see who can jump the furthest, throw a ball furthest, hop on one foot for longest, balance on one foot with eyes closed for longest, or make up the best dance to whatever song’s on the radio. Have fun – it’s all about burning calories and loving life in your new, healthier body.

    Spring Break: Home and Away
It’s the time of year when a lot of us have spring break. It can be an official vacation with time off and a trip to somewhere warm and exotic, or it might just involve a day or two when you get to relax for the first time in a while. Even if you don’t have a formal day off, you can put yourself in the spring break mode by enjoying the changing of the seasons.

    Spring Cleaning to Lose Weight
How do your home and kitchen look after a long winter? Be honest with yourself, now. You don’t have to tell us. A little cluttered? Yes, that happens, especially when the weather’s gloomy.

Now that winter’s on its way out and the sun is starting to make its presence known again, you may find you have a little more energy to do things again. And one of those things may be cleaning. A clean home, and especially a clean kitchen, can lower stress and give you more energy to prepare the food you need to prepare to lose weight.

There’s another perk to cleaning. The more you clean, the more calories you’ll burn. Weeding can burn 300 calories an hour, while dusting and taking out the trash can each burn 200 calories. And if you’re still getting rid of the snow around your property? Carrying a snow blower around can burn 300 calories an hour.

    Deep Cleaning for Your Kitchen
Clean your counters so there’s space to work in your kitchen, and go a step further. Take inventory of what’s accumulated in your fridge, freezer, and pantry over the past few months, and get rid of anything that’s not on your WLS diet. Throw it away or donate it, but don’t let it end up inside of you.

After cleaning out the bad stuff from your kitchen, don’t forget to restock with the good stuff! Take a trip to your supermarket or a farmer’s market to look for greens and other vegetables, strawberries and other fruit, and eggs, fresh fish, and yogurt.

    Pack Your WLS Extras
If you’re lucky, your spring break might involve a trip. We’re betting there’s no way you’ll forget to take nicely fitting clothes in your new smaller size! Don’t forget to take the other new items that you didn’t need before deciding to get healthy.

Along with your bariatric Vitamins, plus a pair of good walking shoes and some comfortable clothes for walking and any other activities you’ll be participating in, you made need to take some emergency Snacks and meals, depending on where you’re going. Pack a few non-perishable, high-protein options if you’re going to a foreign country, an isolated resort, or anywhere else you’re not sure you’ll be able to purchase the foods you need on the spot.

You can find what you need at The BariatricPal Store. It’s also a great choice because you can get the lowest possible prices on everything we sell, plus free shipping with qualified orders. Check it out today!

You might want to take some of these items when packing for your trip.

Instant low-carb, high-protein oatmeal – just add hot Water and have a low-cal Breakfast anywhere! Protein bars to stash in your purse or pocket so you never have to choose between starving, going off of your diet when you’re out and about. Protein shakes, smoothies, and hot chocolate, so you can stay nourished even if your pouch, sleeve, or stomach is acting up a little. Protein pretzels, so you can crunch and munch along with everyone else, but still lose weight.
Enjoy your spring break, St. Patrick’s Day, and entire spring! Thanks for making BariatricPal part of it and continuing to support us.

sorry to hear Deb. I didn't know they could test for Fibromyalgia. I've titrated off Cymbalta (for pain, not depression) and am starting Lyrica soon..which is for fibromyalgic pain..but I've never actually been diagnosed... It's always 'inflammatory pain'..

Hugs to you. Never ever ever give up on yourself. My advice is immerse yourself in the weight loss community. Post here often. Read here often. Go to WLS support meetings at various hospitals. They are usually open to everyone. Make appointments with your surgical team and keep them including the nutritionist. I also go to OA.
Best wishes and again, hugs to you!

I have to ask, during all this time . did your band change at all?
Did you get any Fluid taken out during that stressful period?
I ask only because, in my case, whatever the situation....vacation, parties, high periods and low periods, my band does not change. It is what it is.
Now if I was dieting, as I have done countless times over the years...it would not take much to throw me off the tracks...just give me a reason to backslide.
    That's why I needed surgery...
Perhaps you are relying upon yourself to loose weight as opposed to the surgery...seeing you Dr. and getting the band adjusted is key IMO.
5 day pouch test...people do it for different reasons...I do a variation of it every 6 weeks or so, whenever I feel I am losing restriction (a misnomer) staying off solid foods returns things to where they were....it can't give me something I never had.

This is the 5DPT (5 day pouch test) you go on full liquids for 2 days, soft Protein then work up to ground meat and chicken. I did it and found it very helpful. While it's not always easy, it did cure my cravings for carbs and sweets. If you google it, the whole plan will come up.
I am so sorry for you loss. Wanting to change is the 1st step. Good luck! ????

I just have to share this with somebody and you guys are the lucky winners. Ha ha. I have wanted to get my teeth fixed for a long time and I never felt like I could justify spending the money. I have two so-called "peg teeth" which are basically underdeveloped teeth. Most of my life it didn't bother me too much, but as I have gotten older, they appear even smaller and darker, especially in pictures. So much so, in fact, that from a distance, it sometimes appears as if I am missing a tooth. Consequently, I stopped smiling widely a long time ago. Anyway, two things prompted me to get it done now. First of all, I always thought it was many thousands of dollars to get these two teeth fixed. Turns out it only cost $1800. Second of all, I found out that the wasband just decided to drop 11 grand of marital assets on dental implants for himself. Totally cosmetic dental work. I guess he's planning to date after the divorce is final. So I decided to use my tax refund and get two veneers. Below are before and after pictures. The before picture was kind of hard to find, because I rarely smiled widely in photographs in recent years. I'm not telling my daughters or anybody around me. I'm waiting to see if anybody notices.

    Hey BariatricPal Members!
Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s a day to Celebrate love. This day may involve a romantic dinner with a special someone, or it could involve some time with friends or a little quality time with yourself. However your Valentine’s Day shapes up, you have the power to make it a healthy and happy one. Maybe this newsletter will help inspire you and give you a few ideas.

Here’s what’s in store in this newsletter.

A Romantic Dinner: WLS-Approved Relationships and Weight Loss Surgery: Complicated at Best Love Yourself on This Day
And if you find yourself needing a little company or a lot of love on Valentine’s Day, just logon to BariatricPal. There’s nowhere better to get an extra boost of motivation and ideas than our friendly community. Enjoy the day!

    Sincerely,
    Alex Brecher
    Founder, BariatricPal

    A Romantic Dinner: WLS-Approved
Take a standard Valentine’s Day dinner. For example, you could start with lobster bisque with breadsticks, move on to a filet mignon with mashed potatoes and buttered asparagus, and finish with molten chocolate cake. Wash that down with some wine, and you could be looking at a couple thousand calories. That’s not going to put you in much of a romantic mood for later!

    A Better Idea
What’s better? You can easily trim down each course. Just focus on lean Proteins, vegetables, and portion sizes – just like you already know how! To keep it special, place extra emphasis on high quality ingredients and a beautiful presentation.

Here’s a menu that’s low-calorie, high-Protein, and love-inspiring – being so much lower in calories, saturated fat, and carbs than some alternatives, it’ll keep you from feeling guilty about yourself, or too sluggish to enjoy the rest of the night with your sweetheart.

Starters: A triple aphrodisiac salad with arugula, pomegranate seeds, and pine nuts. Add some herbed olive oil with basil and garlic, and your salad has five ingredients known to support love. Main Course: Lighten up a carb and calorie-laden Pasta dish by using a spiralizer to make zucchini and carrot noodles. Toss with lobster and some truffle oil for a nice balance of Protein, veggies, and healthy fat. Serve it with a lightened-up version of potato croquettes made with pureed sweet potato and cauliflower, and baked. Dessert: End on a sweet note but not an overpowering one. For around 100 calories a serving, you can top mini crust-less cheesecakes made with fat-free cream cheese with strawberry slices and a drizzle of sugar-free chocolate Syrup.< /li>
    Décor: a Calorie-Free Treat
Today is as a good a day as any to practice some good habits that will help you succeed with WLS. In addition to eating slowly (remember, shouldn’t you be focusing on your company more than your plate?), you can pay a little more attention to your eating environment and a little less attention to your food. To make the setting a little more romantic, try eating off of nicer dishes, using some festive holiday napkins, or eating by candlelight. It really makes the meal more special without adding more calories!

Relationships and Weight Loss Surgery: Complicated at Best
So much changes when you get weight loss surgery. Your diet clearly changes, but that may be only a small part of many more changes in your life. Along with diet, your daily schedule may change. You may add workouts and become more active. Your entire attitude towards yourself and life may change – and those are the factors that can have the biggest effects on your relationships.

Sometimes the changes are positive. Those near you may see how happy and healthy you are, and love you all the more for it. You may find it easier to keep up with other people, and easier to be genuine with them because you are more comfortable with yourself.

Other times, relationships can become strained because of WLS.

Reassure them that you’re not planning to leave them. Let them know that you don’t think any less of them or think you’re “better” than they are. Invite them to join you on your journey and let them know you’ll support theirs. Do not let anyone devalue you or undermine your efforts.
Often, the people who are initially negative will come around. Be patient and accepting of them. Sometimes, you will occasionally lose a friend because of your new healthy commitments. That’s a hard thing to accept, but there’s nothing you can do about it. Try to think of what you’ve gained, such as new friendships, extra self-respect, and new opportunities.

    Love Yourself on This Day
It goes without saying that Valentine’s Day was intended to celebrate your relationship with your significant other. We’re all for it, but we don’t think Valentine’s Day should stop there! Whether or not you have a significant other in your life, you can use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to strengthen your relationship with yourself.

    Respect and Love Yourself
Relationships with others can be rocky, but your relationship with yourself may be even tougher. It can take just as much effort to be satisfied and comfortable with yourself as it takes to establish a solid relationship with someone else. You need to work every day at finding what you love about yourself, feeling the joy in being yourself, and showing yourself that you’re worthwhile.

When you’re a weight loss surgery pre-op or post-op patient, there’s the potential for a lot of negative self-talk. You may see physical imperfections, or get mad at yourself for slipping up on your diet. But there is just as much room for positivity. There’s the pride when you make a healthy choice, the joy of participating in new activities, and the excitement of new adventures. You just need to look for the positive signs in yourself, just like you look for the positive things in your loved ones.

Treat Yourself – You Deserve It
What better way to show yourself a little love than with a treat? No, it doesn’t need to be a box of chocolates. There are plenty of other ways you can treat yourself. What about a new workout top, a few sessions with a personal trainer, or a day at the spa?

No worries if a food treat is really the only “treat” that excites you. Invite a friend over to go for a walk and then cook a healthy meal with you, or buy yourself a new spice or foreign ingredient to cook with. You can even invest in some perfectly portioned bariatric dinnerware to help you eat right and remind yourself how far you’ve come at every meal.

Valentine’s Day is a day set aside to celebrate love, and there’s no reason to be chintzy! With so many healthy ways to show love to yourself and the close people in your life, there’s no limit to how far you can take your Valentine’s Day festivities, while losing weight at the same time. Happy Valentine’s Day!

    Choosing a Surgeon: Time-Tested Tips
Choosing a surgeon for your weight loss surgery can be one of the biggest decisions you make on the journey. You may not have much choice if you’re in an HMO or your insurance limits your options. If you’re self-pay or in some PPOs or other healthcare plans, though, you may have tons of choices. How can you get the surgeon that will you give you the tools you need to lose weight successfully?

These are some of the basic tips for choosing a surgeon.

Choose one with plenty of experience. Read reviews. Ask for recommendations from your primary care doctor and any friends or family members who are weight loss surgery patients. Find out about follow-up care and dietary support. Use your gut. It’s often good at telling which surgeon is right for you.
    Do You Understand Everything?
Communication is a big part of weight loss surgery success. You need to understand what is happening to you and what your surgeon and nutritionist ask you to do. When choosing a surgeon, ask all of your questions about the procedure and the after care.

Don’t blame yourself if you don’t understand what your surgeon answers. It’s your surgeon’s job to explain everything in terms you can understand. If you can’t understand and can’t get the surgeon to explain, it may be time for you to move on. This is too important of a decision to risk going with someone who cannot communicate.

This Is as Good as It Gets
It’s only natural to think things will get better, but don’t count on it when you’re choosing a surgeon. If surgeons don’t have time to meet with you and explain everything now, they won’t have time later. If you can’t get an appointment with the nutritionist now, it’s not going to be any easier later.

In short, surgeons are putting their best foot forward when they’re trying to get you to commit to surgery with them. If they’re not satisfying you now, they’re not going to meet your expectations later. Go find a surgeon who starts off by going beyond your expectations – plenty of outstanding surgeons are out there!

Member Spotlight in the Newsletter: Meet Proudgrammy!
We are so delighted this month to feature proudgrammy in the Member Spotlight section of the newsletter. This 62-year-old was born in Hungary and escaped with her family during the Hungarian Revolution at the age of two. She is an encouraging and positive presence on BariatricPal, but things haven’t always been easy for her!

Proudgrammy became overweight in her late teens. Her parents and four siblings were normal weight, and her mother was her worst critic. She even found out later that her ex talked to her parents about her weight!

Proudgramy made many attempts to lose weight using the usual diets such as Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, and Weight Watchers, but the weight did not stay off. It kept going up after her daughter was born.

At 5’3”, proudgrammy’s high weight was 235 lbs. She decided to get the gastric sleeve because she was afraid of complications with the lap-band, and didn’t like the idea of malnutrition with the gastric bypass. She got surgery in 2011 at the age of 57, and is now weighing in at 130 lbs. and a BMI of 23.

She’s had all kinds of victories on and off the scale. She’s cut out most medications, and is taking only half the amount of her epilepsy prescription as before. She feels healthier and happier than before. Some of the proud moments include having room to spare when sitting in the middle seat on an airplane, and shopping for smaller clothing sizes in regular stores. She’s also been able to enjoy volunteering at a hospital three days a week, whereas before surgery she had taken an early retirement and been reluctant to leave the house much.

In the early days, proudgrammy came to BP to ask questions and get answers. Now she comes to give advice to newbies. She says that helps her stay on track and remember where she came from. Some of her advice is to be patient: the weight didn’t come on overnight, and won’t come off overnight. She also warns that maintenance is lifetime struggle.

Thanks, proudgrammy, for being in our Member Spotlight and for being a great presence on BariatricPal. It is great to have you in the community!

If you want to be in the newsletter or you want to nominate someone, please let us know in the Member Spotlight forum or by sending a private message (PM) to Alex Brecher. Everyone has a story to tell, and we want to hear yours! Remember, you don’t have to be at or near goal weight to be in the newsletter!

Party Time! A Few Tips for the Perfect Healthy Bash
Special occasions are some of the toughest time for weight loss surgery patients. Things like birthdays, get-togethers, and sports events – like March Madness – can remind you that life used to revolve around food – and that it no longer does.

So what do you do when you want to party? Don’t worry, weight loss surgery patients can party just as hard as everyone else. It just may be a little different than it was before.

    Branch Out a Little
Or a lot. You’re not a slave to the food table anymore. You now have the chance to enjoy all kinds of other activities besides guarding the buffet line. You can play with the kids, run the betting table, and circulate around the room to say hi to everyone else. You can take pictures. You can play volleyball. @@lamulatona the changes from band to sleeve are a bit of work. First the band has to be removed along with any scar tissue, and all of that needs to heal prior to being sleeved.
If you have the band already, might I ask why you would want to change surgeries if your not having any issues with your band?
Often times the reason for switching from band to another surgery is because of complications from the initial surgery. Sometimes there are band slips, sometimes there can be esophagus dilation and sometimes there are holes in tubing or port issues. Most of these if you are compliant with your band eating mechanics can be avoided, tubing and/or ports can be replaced.
Switching from one WLS modality to another may initially help you lose weight, but if you don't change your mindset about food and your behaviors around eating no weight loss surgery tool is going to be helpful.
What I love about the band is that I am able to learn and grow with it at my pace. I am able to work on my food issues and other health issues without having to struggle to do them from day one. With the sleeve and/or bypass you are initially restricted and your going to lose weight quickly and then after a few months to a year, if your habits have not changed you will begin to regain that lost weight.
I have lost weight with my band, and even through some very serious medical issues of my own I have not gained any of the weight I lost back, and as I able to refocus on weight loss I continue to lose at a steady pace.
There is no magic bullet to losing weight. We all want it gone yesterday but we didn't gain it all in the blink of an eye and it's going to take some time and effort to change ourselves to fit into the new slimmer version of who we want to become.
