NJ, a dear fiend of mine went into the hospital a few days ago. She was put into a coma purposefully two days ago and today they are taking her off all life support so that she can die in peace. She had bypass surgery two years ago. She will die thin, but was one of the unlucky people for whom kidney failure was a result of her surgery. She was always a beautiful woman.
I'm not a huge fan of the sleeve either as I am suffering life long problems due to having another rare (seems like rare is getting more common) complication. But the sleeve is much safer than the bypass. Worst case, if you stay healthy after having the sleeve and can't meet your goals, than have it moved forward to the bypass, but start at the easier procedure and see how it goes. There are so many people here who have lost so much more than you have to lose, so the sleeve could be your best option, but don't take the very last resort first. You have a lifetime to make a second decision. I wish my dear friend still had that option.

iggychic got a reaction from ploveda1 in Today i found out that i streched my pouch
Why the attack? The poor thing obviously didn't get much support from her doctors office and ate what she thought that she was allowed (Cream Soups were allowed for me early out...I had creamy potato in the hospital after my second surgery). I also gained not twenty, but FOURTY pounds in the first five weeks, so it's not impossible. I gained it because of my complications causing Fluid retention, then on TPN in hospital (IV's etc).
There's another thread where the poor gal posted her sisters tragic story and this same thing happened. She got beat to death when she just needed to share her story and was looking for help. If you don't believe the gal, WALK ON BY! Why do you have to beat her up.
I also did not have a leak test at the hospital. They are not a 100% guaranteed test given to everyone. What your doctor does Dawg is not what every doctor does. I see this time and time again here, that people boast they have the "top surgeon" one of the "top ten" and yet I see so many names of docs in that top ten that even my 20 years in banking is not necessary to see that there are over ten top tens out there LOL
This gal wanted help. Leave her be if you're only here to beat her up. Do you also stop and punch homeless people when you walk by you negative posters? Walk by!!!
OP, I was allowed cream soups and things as well but I was limited on the amount. For instance 18oz is just way way way too much for anyone when we're talking cream based soups (or any Soup really) and they are calorie packed. I'm wondering if you maybe need to work with a different nutritionist? Or also if you do have surgical issues to worry about. Did something go wrong? That could explain a weight gain.
I hope you get to the bottom of it and I'm sorry that you got goober here. People on this site don't like to read about the bad stories. They make it very clear and unwelcome sadly It's human nature I guess, but for those of us who suffered them, it's also very real and our stories should be heard as well. Intelligent people do want to hear them!

iggychic got a reaction from eyengo in New Whey Liquid Protein 42g
I am copying this from another site because I don't have time to pull the data up individually but check the facts, it's not hard to find quickly how bad IDS Protein supplements are...
Not all Protein has the same value to your body. The amino acid profile is the reason for this. Proteins are made of amino acids. There are 20 different ones in the human body. Of the twenty, 9 of them must be consumed to meet your daily needs. These 9 amino acids are called Essential (EAA) or Indispensable.
The 9 EAAs are needed in certain proportions. A protein scoring system called Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Scoring (or PDCAAS) was developed to show which products contain all the EAA and in the correct proportions. It is supported by the FDA, the World Health Organization, and perhaps most importantly, the Institute of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences. The highest possible score is 100. -- collagen Protein gets a 0 (the lowest possible score) -- Whey Protein Isolate gets 100 (the highest possible score)
Some Proteins such as COLLAGEN or HYDROLYZED COLLAGEN protein are missing one of the EAAs entirely. So the PDCAAS for collagen is zero. Collagen is often the main ingredient in protein supplements that come in a liquid form, and they usually have lower PDCAAS scores. Here are some collagen products that have lower PDCAAS scores:
New Whey and Profect1: These products appear to have a PDCAAS score of 5 or 6 out of 100. Lab analyses of several samples suggest that about 94% of their protein, by weight, is from collagen.
Proteinex2: The Proteinex OTC products appear to get protein only from hydrolyzed collagen, so their PDCAAS score is 0 or virtually 0.
    Pro-Stat 64 / Pro-Stat 1013: These products appear to have a PDCAAS score of about 37 out of 100.
The BEST products to purchase are products made from whey protein ISOLATE (not concentrate) and soy protein ISOLATE.

I don't often rip someone a new one...but you tempt me dear. Obviously you are leak free so far, dang lucky given you don't seem to worry about them at all! It's a slip up to break a diet pre surgery, it's a suicide attempt to do so after the surgery and if you don't understand that you shouldn't have had the surgery. I had a leak, not from being stupid (ok I wasn't...we'll leave the medical folks out of that) it's a death threat. Do you understand? that freaking burger could KILL you! And worse you might live through the hell that is the treatment for a leak! Literally I never understood the kind of torture that a medical professional could administer in the name of curing you. My ribs were spread while I was awake! Garden hoses shoved into my chest while awake. Knitting needle sized tubes stuffed down my back while awake. PAIN and SUFFERING and I'm one tough chick!
Don't wonder and don't be so unconcerned as to call it "flubbing". Another big F word might make sense, but understand, you are trying to kill yourself and you don't take it seriously. Measure, weigh and stick to the damn rules at lest for the first two months, then if you want to flub up, what the hell, it's your body, but don't come here and throw such horrible choices in the faces of people who take this seriously.
OK there....tough love, but really....think for gods sake. And that was me being "nice" about it.

Early out I tried a Protein bar and had the same reaction as you did to the chocolate. It takes our body time to get comfortable with some foods, and sometimes it never does. I'm glad I can have a taste of chocolate but that if I overdo (lol 3 bites) I feel badly. It's good regulation for that whole Portion Control thingie

I'll reply later in depth but I have a meeting to head to so I want to be quick.
Sannah....if your beautiful baby were a young lady and a doctor made her feel stupid what would you tell her to do? I would be surprised to read that you would let her sweat it out and torture herself over it...I think you'd say "darling, no one should make you feel stupid, especially with everything you are going through" wouldn't you?????
You're not my daughter (If you were you'd be dressed up in enough pink and purple tulle and ribbons to make yourself dizzy...but that's a mom of a son's imagination talking...) umm anyhoo, you aren't my daughter so I'll just smack you lightly upside the head and say "Girlfriend, I know you talk to bananas, but you're not stupid! You're just goofy and NO ONE should be talking to you as if you are, let alone actually tell you to your face that you are!!!!!!!" NO ONE!!!!
The best move I made was to fire my ever so nice doctor and move on to another doctor. Fresh eyes are so important when you go through such an all consuming medical disaster like this. I don't think you'll regret the move darling and you might just end up being very thankful, as I am, about making that kind of a move!
But don't call them on the banana....they're typically wire tapped

Her facts were a bit off but what was said is true. People do eat around their tools and people do gain weight back, but not to the extent that she said of course. But those people likely didn't deal with their food issues and didn't make the changes necessary to their lives to be successful. This is just a tool and if some silly witch with an MD under her black hat is going to make you gain two pounds than it's time for your to assess where you are in that journey right? I mean that in a nice way, believe me....you're rocking your sleeve so far, but don't let some silly idiot push you back down a long dark road. Use her as a valuable lesson about why you feel you've gained weight since you saw her. What did you do? Did a cookie help? Probably not right?
And yes change doctors, but TELL THE MANAGEMENT WHY!!!!! Arrogant idiots can only be dealt with if you share your negative experiences with her boss. She may not like WLS...heck I don't either in many cases, but as a medical professional, with a patient sitting in front of you who's already had the surgery, what the hell good are you doing telling them they made a bad choice? It's just stupid at an amazing level of stupid Don't tell them that you reacted with food....just share the facts and do so in writing so that they can use this as a training tool. It may not help her, but it could help another doc not stick his/her foot in their mouth in the future and might just manage to get her to keep her thoughts to herself when the next poor patient sits in front of her.
But don't let her win dear! You have to make the right choices to prove her wrong Success is hard to argue with.

I'm sorry to read that you are still going through all of this Sannah. It's been too long of a road!
I'm also glad to read you're going to talk to your doc, but please don't hesitate if she does not change immediately to change docs. Changing docs saved my life. I don't know how much longer I could have made it given the care I was getting from my first doc. Fresh eyes aren't a bad thing, especially given all of the complications you've gone through. The fact that anyone would tell you that a question you ask is stupid concerns me. Arrogance has no place in medical care and yet so many doctors and nurses are full of it! You have a right to ask stupid questions all day long if you feel the need And your doc should shut up and answer them with a smile on her face.
I got so beat down when I was at my worst and I know that I wasn't an easy patient to deal with. I was SOOOOOO worn out and so worried about dying far from my son and husband that every time the poor docs would come to my room and ask how I was I'd start bawling This from a girl who is well known to have a heart of steel. I never cry! But a body can only take so much before you give in. I told my girlfriends I'd kind of lost "myself" during the process which was entirely true. It wasn't until they finally fixed my leak that I found me again. BTW my docs prefer not to use stents because of the pain they cause a patient. Instead they use a devise called the "claw" which is literally not felt in your body and in early cases is really successful. In late leaks (like mine) it's much less so, but they decided to go ahead because they felt that the risks of a stent and all of the continued care required might cause me even more difficulty (ie your heart issue etc). I love that little claw It worked for me and saved my life. I went from being horrifically sick to being well in a couple of days, though like you my energy was literally gone. I could barely walk when I came home but every day got better.
My son suffered due to my complications. He's still scared I will "go away" again for a long time so when I travel he asks me not to go to the doctors because they might keep me far away from him I'm glad your little one is smaller than that so she won't remember this and have that worry. I know it must break your heart, as it did mine, to not be able to care for her.
WHen I was going through all of this I posted on VSG almost daily. I found great support from many people here (and the standard, you must have made this up crap as well, but not too much of that). I wasn't always strong enough to post, but I'd sit in my hospital bed at night and read the kind comments from these strangers across the nation and they helped me, more than I can say. I'm glad you're reaching out, and maybe hun you could do that as well...just keep this thread going with your daily updates until you feel you've found Sannah again Whine, ask stupid questions, scream, yell and cry here and we'll do our best to help you. I had a loving family at home and many dear friends and they did help, but I also felt I had to be strong for them and here, I could just say what I felt without judgement. It helps hun. You're in my thoughts! Now go drink a Protein shake

Hmmm ... just over 2 months out from surgery ... obviously your expectations where FAR larger than your reality. Perhaps some more research prior to surgery may have helped to right-size your expectations, but alas, here we are. Let's take a look at your "complaints":
    Sip, Sip, sip....
This is true. You are not going to be able to chug liquids like you may have been accustomed to, but as time progresses, you will move out of the sip stage

    What can I eat?
    will it hurt my tummy?
yes it hurts my tummy? Everything hurts!
9 out of 10 days are bad food days!
2 months out, you should be out of puree stage and eating real foods. If it hurts, this is your body's way of letting you know that you are doing something wrong. Either: taking too big of bites, not chewing well enough, eating too quickly, or a combination of all three. Yes, you are going to have to change that. We can no longer shovel food down our throat. Take a small bite, put your utensil down, chew well and evaluate how your stomach feels before taking another bite. Just because there is food on your plate in front of you doesn't mean you have to eat it. When you put your portion on your plate, start putting half of the amount on it. You can always go back and get another bit.

Invited to eat lunch with a friend... Oh what can I eat.. oh yeah, I can't eat anything in a social setting!
Invited to dinner with friends... I'll order food just move it around my plate... get a to go box.... order Water just so I don't look silly! Remember I can't eat in a social setting!

It is amazing to read so many threads with this similar theme. Trust me, people really aren't watching what and how much you eat. You and your eating habits really aren't the focus of everyone else's life. I know it feels that way now since food and its consumption is the focus of our lives, but everybody else really doesn't care. If someone does mention something, just say you just really aren't that hungry right now. I always ordered Soup early on when out with friends and co-workers. Went out several times and people never really mentioned anything about my eating.

Must eat alone so I can concentrate on how big of a bite, how I must chew, chew, chew!
Uh ... it does take practice to learn new habits, but this isn't as difficult as riding a bike, so, yes, you can practice this in public.

Constant bloating and gas! Gas X goes every where with me!
Waking up every single night since surgery at 3 am ish so nauseous.... must keep Water by my bed... helps the nausea
What are you eating? Are you eating late night? Do you eat prior to laying down? Seeing that you say eating is painful, try eating less more often. Talk to your Dr about getting a PPI.

Invited for drinks with friends... Oh what can I drink? No beer.... nothing too sweet! Oh crap! What I did drink hurts my stomach... Sorry friends to break up the party I must go home.... I am sick... AGAIN!
There are far more non-fizzy drinks out there than not. You can figure this out. If you really can't, let me know. I bar-tended for years through college.

Sex? What is that? Non exsistant is what it is! Weak, tired, eating, drinking, bloating, gas is what I think about not sex!
What do they say ... 75% of sex happens between the ears? Looking at your current state of mind, this is not surprising. Once you right-size your expectations, put on your big-girl pants and start embracing your new life, this will change.

My hair is falling out by the handfulls!
Yup. Good to know you are normal in this area. It will continue for the next couple months and then it will start growing back. A year from now you will never know it happened. And no, your co-workers are not gathering at the water cooler discussing your hair. I know we would all like to think we are the center of everyone else's life, but I have bad news for you ... you're not.
