KS Fort Worth reacted to smartypants in Five Days Post Op. Doing Great!
Nah, I wasn't going to "cheat" by eating toast. I was just wondering if anyone else was tempted. In a way, I'm glad that I have the craving for something to eat. That means that everything is healing as it should.
I'm a good patient. I'll follow what the doc tells me to do.

Also wishing for a piece of toast, but honestly, getting food particles stuck in the staple line would so NOT be worth it. It's only a short time, and you have the rest of your like to enjoy eating responsibly. Give your body the time it needs to heal without shooting yourself in the foot. I for one will NOT be cheating on my doctor's plan. Just because somebody else may have cheated in the past with no complications is no guarantee that you or I will fare similarly.

I know what you mean! I'm 50, and honestly cannot imagine myself thin, as I have been overweight since childhood. But just because I can't imagine it, does not mean I'm not going there!

I'm with you on this one, sister. Very early mornings are usually cool enough to walk. You've done fantastic so far, just get in what you can, stay hydrated, and be patient. Fall will be here soon enough!
Goals excellent, but PLEASE don't beat yourself up if you happen to fall shy of one. This is a life-long change, and as long as things are going the right direction that's what counts.

Sleeved July 24th, recovery going well. Only used pain meds for 3 nights. Still 9 more days of full liquids (every Doc is different, it seems, but I am patient...) getting plenty of liquids, and Protein numbers are good. I lost about 45 pounds pre-op, so I'm not really worrying about calories right now, although I'm sure they are not too high. Just concentrating on letting my body heal. Rarely actually hungry, and the feeling seems transient. Grateful to be given this opportunity to get my weight under control, for the first time in my life.

Reopman sorry you are having a rough start
at this early stage, you will be drinking Clear liquids, broth, popsicles and as much H20 as you can tolerate.
Sounds like you are drinking - don't expect to drink in 5 days what you will drink in 50 days. doesn't work that way
Unless your dr/./NUT told you otherwise, don't think you are supposed to be having creamed soup this early after WLS - too heavy
you are only 5 days post op - some people can't handle too much at the beginning - do the best you can to have as much liquids as possible. you don't want to get dehydrated
try not to worry too much - things usually have a way of working out
i never had those Protein shakes for 10 days or so, my NUT just said to stay hydrated, worry about the Proteins later
    one day at a time
    feel better
    good luck
    kathy

357, i got on the scale and said that was it. I have 2 kids and that weight wasnt going to keep me around. So i did what i had always done i went on a diet and finished up my reqs for weight loss surgery. Things is i have always been able to lose weight when i hit it hard, and was able to drop 60 lbs. Then everyone was saying you dont need the surgery keep doing what you are doing. They dont get it. It is not the losing it is the keeping it off, and i beleive this is the best tool i have to date to do that.

My doctor told me that the greatest risk of leaks is 3-5 weeks, after the swelling has gone down, and is due to essentially hydraulic back pressure created as the stomach pushes food into the small intestine. Based on that, I WILL NOT CHEAT. It simply is not worth the risk. I will be in mushies then and they will be truly mushy. I'm patient; I have the rest of my life to eat. A few weeks is NOT going to kill me.

Purple, it's mostly head hunger, make sure you take your PPI and if you have a lot of growling or movement in your stomach, like hunger pains, remember it could also be healing pains. Hard to tell the difference between acid reflux, hunger pains and healing pains. You cut your finger, it throbs...your stomach was cut, it's going to throb while it's healing, the inside and outside is very swollen. When I would get the pains I realized it was just healing pains. A good test is drinking 3 or 4 ounces of Water, I could get 3 ounces down but the 4th I would feel so stuffed and that was just Water.
I'm 8 weeks down, I am still eating 1/4 cup of food, or 2 ounces depending. I can get one egg down for lunch and I am stuffed.
It is a little bit hard since starting real food to watch my family fill up their huge plates with food, and I'm eating off a saucer or a 1/4 cup little pretty bowl that I use, and they eat their entire plate and are going for seconds, and I'm not even 1/2 through my quarter cup.
I am grateful that I don't eat the way I used to. I used to compare what I ate to them....they would stay the same and I always gained even if I ate 1/2 of what they ate.

I'm a year out and took my 7 year old out to Breakfast the other morning.
I had one egg over medium, 1 piece of toast (thick) and 1 piece of bacon.
    I couldn't finish it.
I ate the whole egg, but about half of my toast and half of the bacon. But ... I was satisified. My stomach felt full (the new full) and I wasn't hungry an hour later.
It is a change in lifestyle, for sure, but you adapt.

I am a big believer in positive affirmation. If you truly believe that things will go well, I honestly do not know that they will go that way.. but this much I will tell you. If you go into surgery thinking you are doing the wrong thing and thinking you are going to die... you are doing yourself a disservice. I am an OR nurse, and I have seen patients who believe the worst. And they are never disappointed. I even had one patient who kept saying she was going to die... and she did. So please, try to be positive. Picture yourself as being healthy and thinner. Picture yourself wearing that cute little dress you saw in the magazine. Get yourself into the mind set of positivity. Bring gratitude and joy into your life and it will permeate thru all aspects of your life.
Yeah, surgery is scary. But believe me the doctors and the nurses are there for you and for you alone. YOU ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON IN THE ROOM. Remember that. Life is good, and you are going to set the bar for yourself! You can do this!!

I was the opposite. I just assumed It would be horrible and I would get a leak and not lose weight and never be able to eat anything again. Isn't that awful???? My comfort came, primarily from my faith (but that's a different thread;) ) and secondly from knowing I picked the best surgeon I could find. Surgery and recovery is no bed of roses, but it's certainly not the worst thing I've ever been through. After that first couple of weeks...life has just been outstandingly wonderful!! I do not regret even a SECOND of the discomfort. I'd do it all again no problem. (glad I won't have to though!)

My opinion differs here, I find it hard to believe that so many people will support bad decisions. It is absolutely imperative when somebody is headed down a path that is detrimental we as a community stand up and let them know just how bad of a decision they are making.
I for one would much rather have someone mad at me because I hurt their thin skinned feelings than support a potentially destructive action.
I don't think I could live with myself if I someone hurt themselves because I was too afraid to actually tell them what they were doing was stupid, for fear I might offend them or hurt their feelings?
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe that support & encouragement play a key roll in our purpose here.
But if a heroin addict came to me and said "I just went through rehab, now I'm just experimenting a bit with cocaine". I bet then nobody in their right mind would question me when I responded with "what the hell are you thinking? I think you really missed something." so my question is, what is the major difference?

Can I ask why exactly you would go against your doctor's orders intentionally? I get that liquid diet is no fun, but I don't see why anyone would pay possibly thousands of dollars to have their stomach cut out and then not follow the doctor's orders. 2 weeks of a liquid diet is honestly not that hard, and they make these guidelines because they are trying to protect your health and think this is the best way to move through this process. They have years of medical school, residency, fellowship, not to mention experience to base their instructions off of.
If you are not enjoying liquids, try switching flavor of Protein powders. Add jellos. pudding. Tea. Homemade Soup broth. Greek Yogurt. There are tons of things you could try..
Just saying...seems kinda silly to me. If you can't stick to a 2 week liquid diet, how are you going to have the willpower to resist more difficult foods later on? Exercise some restraint or at least consider consulting your doctor before just deciding to go off plan.
I'm not trying to be mean....but I read this and just went "....really?"

I just wanted to do a little happy dance for being 1/3 of the way to my goal! I am 5 1/2 weeks post op and hit my first goal. When I get down 3 more lbs...I get my first little treat! My hubby set the second goal. So down 50 lbs...100 lbs to go! My next goal is to be down 10 more lbs before Labor Day! I love reaching goals. I like to be a winner, I hate losing so that is why being over weight was such a disappointment for me!

KS Fort Worth reacted to Butterthebean in Three Days Post Op... Any Suggestions?
They didn't give you any information? They should have.
But here is a brief summary of my Dr.s plan.
Walk every 2 hours while you're awake for the first 2 weeks.
At 2 weeks you can start some other exercises like elliptical and cycling, but easy does it and only if you feel no discomfort. No lifting anything heavy for at least 6 weeks.
    2 weeks on full liquids.
then 2 weeks on mushies, anything you can mash with a fork.
then at 4 weeks out start slowly introducing regular foods...one at a time.
Try to get in at least 64 ounces of Water a day, and 60 to 90 grams of Protein. It will be difficult to do that the first week, but will get easier as you heal. The Water and walking are the most important things on this list.

What he did is inexcusable, but not unforgivable. I do understand his "resentment," for lack of a better word, with your sickness. My wife developed a chronic illness many years ago, and I would have cheated had opportunity presented itself. I am thankful I did not, and finally made peace with myself when I decided that my wedding vows MEANT something. Best decision I ever made. Your husband may come around, or he may not. I would think twice before I would discard this marriage though, as divorce is not pain-free either. If you have a church, perhaps you two could seek counseling from your pastor. Best of luck...

My older brother is mostly supportive, but has said "if you simply ate less..."
He has need complaining occasionally for about a year of wanting to lose 20-30 pounds.
If HE can't lose a mere 20, what makes him think I can simply drop one HUNDRED and twenty?
