Googler got a reaction from Band07 in Converting from Sleeve to Bypass?
I haven't weighed myself since I've come home. I'm holding out for a bit to let some swelling go down. With my Protein shakes (~150 cal) and bits, I'm getting at least 500, one day was more than 700. Still, should be low enough to lose.
I'm really trying to get my Protein in to try and avoid the hairloss that I had with the sleeve. Truth is, I still don't know that I made the right decision in having the bypass. I wanted the sleeve to be enough. No dumping fears, no real restrictions in what I could eat, just how much. I love spicy foods and with the bypass I worry I'll not be able to have those.
Also, I know that losing now will be different. I can't expect a big rush of weightloss. I've had that already. It's my hope to lose 50 lbs by the end of the year. Even that may be too much to ask, but I'm hoping. I still have loads of excess weight, and though I don't expect to get to a tiny size, I'd love to be under 200 lbs someday.

In my opinion, you try everything possible on your own first. You get brutally honest with yourself. Are you really trying ? Are there places in your diet you could cut back ? Are you eating all your Protein ? Drinking your Water ? Exercising at least some ? If the answer is yes 100% yes you are giving it your all and still can't lose or worse gain then and only then consider surgery.

Refried beans! Omgoodness what I wouldn't give to have a taco bell over here! Yep, I know, fast food is bad...lol I have to go to a special shop to get so many things and even then, they may or may not it that week or ever again. Refried Beans would be yummy with a little cheese and salsa mixed through. I have some laughing cow cheese that I'm wanting to put into some mashed cauliflower, but I'm weighing the yum satisfaction vs. cauli-gas. I'm not ready for that risk. Maybe in a few weeks.
I followed the same plan when I was sleeved and I truly believe it's why my sleeve was less successful. After reading these stories of amazing losses in the first few months, I was a bit disheartened with my own. Makes sense, though, with the liquids usually being for 3-4+ weeks and us over here only doing 5 days worth.
Anyways, yes, I plan to go much slower this time. I'm hoping to be able to travel in 7 weeks. So healing completely is top priority.

It went ok. I sincerely feel no effects from the bypass part of my surgery, but the meshing/fixing of the incisional hernia (from gall bladder surgery, nothing gastric) is hella-painful. I don't have to worry about going back to work, but hubs goes back tomorrow. I'm going to miss him helping me at times.
I truly had no pain after the sleeve surgery. I was not expecting this to be like this. Coughing, clearing my throat, anything where my midsection tightens is rough.
Good luck with heading back to work. So glad everything is going good for you!

    Band07,
Good luck tomorrow! I think I'm having a regular bypass, I don't remember 'mini' being mentioned. But to be true, many of my visits have been in Dutch and while I get most of it (and repeat it back to them in my Dutch or in full on English), there's a chance I missed the 'mini' part. I'll ask tomorrow before going under. I have other things to be fixed while I'm in. An incisional hernia from my open gall bladder surgery and a paraesophageal hernia that developed since my sleeve surgery in 2012.
Anyways, we'll see what happens. I do wish you loads of luck and prayers for us both!

I am also having the conversation surgery due to acid reflux (Feb 23). I have gained some weight back (30#s of the original 90# lost) and am worried about this surgery. I know it will help clear things up medically, or so they say, I am just concerned about re-routing organs.
I have read my share of medical treatments/stories and successes. However I have to keep remembering how bad I feel when my stomach reacts and that this will change things for the better.
Just getting a little bit of hesitation. I was originally scheduled to have the Roux 2 years ago and two weeks before my surgery, I chickened out and switched to the sleeve. I regretted it ever since.
I wish you the best of luck. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I can get through this and make it to surgery.

Survivor would be terrible for WLS folks. Protein is extremely scarce and all they have regularly is a little rice. From what I can tell they all gain the weight back, plus (just like any other diet).
My question has always been: who in the world goes on Survivor or the Amazing Race without knowing how to swim (or drive a stick shift for TAR) and expects to be successful?

I can understand how that would be rough. Maybe just tell them your stomach hasn't been feeling great lately so you don't want to eat much? I usually just order off the appetizer menu when I go out.

I stop drinking fluids 30 min. before I eat and wait 30 min. after I eat...
Somewhere on this forum is a great video about what happens when you drink while or just after you eat...the more Water put into your sleeve the less dense the food becomes that you ate. It opens the flap at the bottom of your stomach and it starts to leak out and then you do not have the holding tank working as well as it should. It will not allow you to get as much acid to break down what you ate as well so you won't get the greatest amount of good from what you are eating.....It is that simple.
Most of our food is broken down in the lower intestines but it gets the help it needs to do the bast job it can by starting the breaking down process in the sleeve....
    Hope this helps!

I too struggle with sugars, carbs, and binge eating, so I feel your pain. I take a multi-pronged approach to getting myself back on track - whip out all the strategies you can come up with, the more the merrier. Here are the ones that help me:
    (1) Take some time to really, really focus on why you want to get back on track. Ideally, every day. I find this helps me up my motivation in the face of stress or temptations. I often journal for a few minutes, jotting down all the reasons I want to get back on track, and all the reasons I don't want to eat the foods I shouldn't be eating. But whatever works for you - meditate, have a pep talk with yourself in the mirror in the morning, just take some time to really focus your mind on what you're working on.
    (2) Get the sugar and carbs out of your menu. If your husband's frustrated seeing the path you're taking, hopefully that means he'll be supportive in removing the temptations. Get them out of the house. Stock up on good-for you foods. The first few days to a week will be the hardest, face that, and commit to getting through them, whatever it takes. Eat a little more veggies or Protein than usual if you need to, or have an extra Protein shake. You don't want to be combatting the sugar/carb cravings and hunger at the same time, so eat dense protein and veggies, snack on them if you need to. I'd vote for hard boiled eggs, or chicken breast, or something like that over a shake. Don't be afraid of some healthy fats to keep you satisfied.
    (3) Have a strategy for combatting the munchies - get up and go for a walk, take three deep breaths, or distract yourself with something. Make yourself a cup of tea, or sugar free cider, or coffee, or whatever floats your boat, as long as it doesn't have carbs or sugar. I chew a ridiculous amount of sugar free gum - it's a habit I need to break eventually, but at the moment it's working for me, and it beats the heck out of eating chocolate or cookies!
    (4) Find a way to get some accountability. I track my food and exercise on MyFitnessPal, but if I'm eating badly I start to hide, so that doesn't work for me. Tell your husband, or a friend, or someone here what your plan is, and check in with them regularly. Or, join a support group. If OA meetings can't be worked into your schedule, find a group online. I just wrapped up a 6-week online accountability group on Facebook - we had to check in at least once daily, and it was a great group. Cost me $10 to participate, but I was entered in a drawing to win a pot of $$ (don't recall exactly what the pot was, maybe $75 - $90?). I didn't win, but it got me online every day, I got some support, I got to support others, and it helped with that focus thing.
    (5) Celebrate your victories, no matter how small. Got through snack time without eating bad? Got some exercise today? Made it through a whole day with no sugar? Whatever it is, Celebrate it. Do a little happy dance. Pat yourself on the back. Do a fist pump in the air and tell yourself you ROCK in the mirror. If your husband's the sort who will be supportive, tell him, and let him tell you how awesome you are. This is a really key element of building new habits, and it feels silly, but it really does work. Positive reinforcement is really important, and the scale can be a mean witch, so find another way.
You CAN do this! You've done it already, you just got derailed, but you can do it again.

Wow I could have written this myself. My surgery was September 27. I started at 410. I lost 25 pre op and only 27 pounds since surgery. My total is 52 pounds loss. I am walking 1 to 2 miles 5 days a week. Also not eating carbs. My weight has stalled for over 2 weeks. I added a few carbs in on Saturday and lost 3 pounds since then. I have a major problem with Constipation. I also lost 20 pounds with in the first 2 weeks if surgery. I seem to be the slowest loser ever. I also struggle with getting my water in. I just try to stay positive and think when I have in my life lost 52 in 2 months? I could not have done this on my own. I would have already given up by now because the weight loss is slow. I just keep telling myself I am eating 1/10 of what I used to eat in a day. The weight has to come off eventually. Just try to stay positive. Maybe we are slower loser. But we are losing. And we will lose 100 pounds by six months!!!!!

Another update with pics. Tomorrow will be 11 months officially and im down 131 pounds. I honestly didnt want to lose this much or think that i would lose this much. I feel that im skinny a little to skinny but i would rather be skinny and healthy then fat and miserable. I wont complain but im in a better place. If your in a rut....remember you will get there. Ive been at the same place that your at now. Man about losing weight so slow, aggravated with the diet, smells from food make you think about eating like you used to.... and the thoughts about the maintaining.....but hey its worth it right? You will get there just as i did even when i didnt think that i could and it was really hard.
    Have a great week.

I told my husband I wanted to be sleeved. One year ago I picked up the phone and made my first appointment. I am now 6 months post op, down 86lbs. I started in size 22 pants and 3xl tops. I am now in size 14 pants and almost ready to move to L tops. What a great decision!

Dr. Davidson's dietitian told us that he NEVER wants his patients to eat more than a cup of food at a time. I am over three years out and I still cannot eat a cup of food, close but not quite. Some stuff, I can only eat a little over a half cup. This is GREAT, we don't want to eat much. I hope it never changes, never increases!! We are NEVER suppose to drink with out meals, that needs to become habit, natural....just the way you do things. You'll get use to it. Celebrate your new normal, this is why we had the majority of our tummy removed!!!! Good luck!!

Googler reacted to JerseyGirl68 in What does full feel like?
I agree about the initial full feeling, just a heads up.. You may not want to get into the habit (or continuing the habit) of eating until you are full, one extra bite can really be very painful. You might want to try portioning or weighing your food out and seeing how that goes. At 7 months out, 4oz. is what I aim for and I never go back for more. If you're conditioned to eat what is on your plate and that plate always has more than 3-4oz on it, you'll constantly be pushing the limits. Yesterday someone posted (sorry I forgot who at the moment, but I bookmarked it) a link to an article about if your sleeve can stretch. http://www.obesityco...stomach-stretch It was a good read, I thought.
Old habits die hard. I was also a "finish what's on your plate" person my whole life and those plates were always plenty full. Now, using smaller plates and portioning what I put on it, lets me clean my plate, but not overindulge. I can bring lunch to the office, I only use small 4oz. containers, and when I wrap leftovers for me, I use this size too. I love that I'm not having food go to waste and I'm starting new patters for myself that will keep me going long term. Our sleeves will be able to handle more food in time, I don't want that to be my downfall.
Good luck!! and congratulation on your surgery.

Well I'll be 8 months out from surgery on Monday. Did another before/after pic. Weight loss is definitely slowing down but I'm quite close to my goal and perfectly content where I am. I wouldn't mind dropping a few more pounds and I'm still losing, just slowly (7 pounds in the last 7 weeks). Overall though I feel a million times better.... I've gone from a 3XT/4X shirt to a regular Large shirt and waist was as big as a 50 at one point but generally a 46/48 and now down to a 34.
    Absolutely ZERO regrets!
