This is the toughest part of the journey, IMO. After you're back on solids, it will all seem like a dream and like it wasn't that big a deal, but it's huge when you're going through it. For the need to chew, I suggest ice or SF popsicles (let it melt in your mouth after chewing). Also, if your doc hasn't got you on an acid reducer, ask him or her about it. It really helps with the head hunger.
My first mushie was refried Beans and they were AMAZING! Two bites and I was done, but they tasted wonderful!
Good luck! I know it's tought, but it will be worth it.

I'm almost a year out and my saving grace was instant mashed potato with a bit of fat free shredded cheddar....once you get on your mushies that will be like heaven for you! In the days of liquids my doctor allowed me fat free sugar free ice cream and I had that with a dollap of fat free sugar free whipped cream and Sugar Free Chocolate syrup....like a sundae. It was fantastic and felt so good cold and sliding down my hurting belly:) You can do this momma! Don't sweat it AT ALL! the hard part is maintaining without getting out of control. This past week I lost control at my class end of the year party and I just put myself on the 5 day pouch test to get my head back in the right place.....we are all here to support each other and if you have any questions at all you feel free to ask as I have been through all of this already! Also, when you get on to mushies another great option is refried Beans in the can topped with fat free sour cream, a bit of guac and some fat free shredded cheddar and some mild salsa yumbo! and just two tablespoons and I was done. I also (and still do) live on sunflower seeds. I ate those at about three weeks out and have been hooked ever since. They are a great source of Fiber, Protein and magnesium.....so delish

Why even comment if it's gonna be patronizing?? Not everyone will feel the exact same effect as the next person and if someone needs support that's what this forum is for and not for comments like this!
Melissamae, it's okay to feel how you feel girl....just be strong and it does get better. Most of us know that the hunger we experience after the surgery is our head reminding us of the lifestyle we lived for so long, it gets easier to deal with and to change as time goes on. I am 2 months out now and I know it was so hard the few 3-4 weeks but it got easier, thank God! Hang in there and be strong

So I am 9 days post op. I am happy with my decision, but am finding it hard to not eat!! I have to make Breakfast, lunch and dinner for my kids daily, and I find myself wanting what they are eating, not this "full-liquid stage" stuff anymore!! I know the food stages and guidelines are there for a reason, but man, I just want something of substance to chew on and eat!! Any advice/thoughts?

So I know some of you already do this, but I find setting small goals gives me little victories along the way and prevent me from getting discouraged when stalls hit. When you have large amount of weights to lose it can seem daunting to reach a huge goal. Setting small ones along the way help us reach them. The way I do it is set a goal and state the reason why it's my goal. Then I set several others after them. See below:
Starting today, 209.6 (down from 243.6-includes 2 week pre-op and surgery on 3/13/12)
1st goal- lose 6 (this will take my overall weight loss, including pre-op to 40 lbs/ weight will be 203.6)
2nd goal-lose 4 (this will take me to Onederland, 199.6)
3rd goal-lose 6 (this will take me to 50 lbs weight loss and half way to goal,193.6)
    4th goal-lose 4 (this will take me to the 180's, 189.6)
5th goal-lose 6 (this will take me to 60 lbs lost and 60% to goal, 183.6
    6th goal-lose 0.6 (this is my wedding weight from 13 years ago,183)
    7th goal-lose 4 (this will put me at 179-I haven't seen the 170's in 16 years,179)
8th goal-lose 5.4 (this will put me at 70 lbs lost and 70% to goal, 173.6)
    9th goal-lose 4 (this will put me in the 160's, 169.6)
10th goal-lose 6 (this will put me at 80 lbs lost and 80% to goal, 163.6)
11th goal-lose 4 (this will put me in the 150's-haven't seen this in 18 years, 159.6)
12th goal-lose 6 (this will put me at 90lbs lost and 90% to goal, 153.6)
    13th goal-lose 4 (this will put me in the 140's, 149.6)
    14th goal-lose 6 (GOAL!!! 100 lbs lost)
    15th goal-maintain, maintain, maintain
Please join me if you like. When we achieve our mini goals it feels so good and it's a chance to Celebrate successes along the way. Good luck!

What a difference just ten months has made in my life. The pictures below says it all. The first picture was taken just before my surgery. I had already lost 41 lbs before my surgery on June 1, 2011. The second picture was taken April 1, 2012 - just ten months later. I have lost 148 lb in all now and have just 46 more to go. This journey has been totally amazing. I could not be any happier.

I'm impressed that you are going to take care of yourself with or without your husband's support. It can be difficult to swim up stream but it seems you know deep down that this will ultimately be a good thing in spite of other's misgivings. Hopefully, when you've had the surgery and there's no turning back, hubby will get on board. The weight will drop off very quickly at first and that might shake things up a bit for him as he sees such immediate results. This forum has been a tremendous source of support so I hope, if you're ever feeling alone in your journey, that you post and let us be there for you. Here's to MAY 29TH!

A lot depends on what his motivation is, so yes, the idea to bring him to a seminar or have him do his own research is a good one. If he's trying to keep you from getting your hopes up too high, that's one thing. If he's anxious about you losing the weight because of his own insecurities, it's another. And if he just doesn't want the financial burden if it doesn't work that's also another thing entirely!
My husband was supportive to the extent that once I told him I wanted to do it he backed me up. However, he never felt I needed to lose weight. He was worried a little bit that we would wind up spending another large chunk of our own money to fund yet another diet attempt on my part. As I've lost he and I have had to have more than one heart-to-heart about how he's feeling because I think part of him never really did expect all of the changes that came with the surgery. Not just losing weight, but personality changes in me and total lifestyle changes that have affected our entire family, too.
Talk it out and ask him where he's coming from. You'll be better off post op if he's worried about money or failure, and will have a bigger issue if the problem is insecurity on his part.
Marriages that are in a good place prior to surgery generally improve or at least don't worsen. Folks that have tension prior to surgery can have real problems afterward, so get it all out in the open now.

I was sleeved 2-15-2012, just over 2 months ago. I have had some ups and downs. Overall though I am doing great. Much better than I was expecting to be doing at this point. I started at 320lbs and now weigh 272..
As of today I have lost 48 lbs since before my pre op diet and 40 inches!!! My blood pressure is normal now when it was super high before. I move around so much easier and I find that I can stand and go for hours when before I had to stop and rest all the time.
I think the hardest thing for me is over coming the mental part. I still can't believe such a small amount of food can feel me up. It feels great that food does not control my life anymore. I would eat until I made myself sick before I had this surgery and I could eat monster amounts of food. Now i just have my few bites and move on. I have energy and I feel fantastic. A few people who know I have had the surgery have noticed I have lost weight but other people haven't noticed too much yet. The most important thing is I notice and I feel good. My clothes are falling off me and I have have dropped from a 30/32 tight to a 22/24 that is loose.
I still have a long way to go I just wanted to share my story so far. I love this site it has helped me so much.
I am looking forward to what the future has in store for me and for all of us.
here is an updated pic before and after..
the before is pretty horrible i just wanted it to be as real as possible

My husband was sleeved a year before me and had great success, so he was 100% supportive of my decision to do it, too; in fact, he was my biggest cheerleader and was very encouraging. I think the key is, as others say, education and getting the facts. Let's face it, none of us would have this surgery if we didn't need it. Not one person here would happily hop onto a surgeon's table and say, "Hey, cut out most of my stomach, please," if we didn't absolutely need to--because we couldn't lose weight in other ways and keep it off. Happily for us, this procedure allows us a way to live longer, to be healthier, to enjoy life more--thank goodness for the sleeve!!!!! I'm happy you got your date, and I'm hoping your husband has taken the time to check it all out, prepare himself as best he can for y'all's new life together, and is ready to roll with ya! You will find, I think, a much happier you, and he will have a much happier wife in the long run. That's what my husband says, anyway!
