MinaT got a reaction from Jeno59 in Things You Can Never Have Again With Sleeve :(
I am 3 months out and have zero problems with lettuce. I see no reason in drinking pop whatsoever, even though others do it. I was told the carbonation does expand your stomach (which it does while you are drinking it) whether or not it stretches is a highly debated issue on VSG.
There are those of us that would rather not take the chance. Should you get the sleeve and start eating candy bars, I would say the answer is NO, do people do it, I am sure they do. I have read people eating potato chips as early as a week out.
If you are going to go back to your old way of eating after surgery, then surgery should put off until you have enough psychological counseling to change the emotional eating issues, and get proper nutritional counseling to see the hows and why on how you gained so weight in the first place and realize that this is something you need to do for life.
The sleeve is for you if you want to make lifestyle changes. Can you gain the weight back after you get the sleeve and lose all your weight? Yes, if you do not make lifestyle changes.
The sleeve DOES stretch. It will never get to the size your stomach was pre-surgery, but it does get bigger and it is easier to eat more food as time goes on, so it has to be a lifestyle change.
I can eat just as spicy a food now as I did before surgery. I do not drink caffeine, pop, beer. I have had a glass of wine with no problem.
When I hit goal I will probably have a glass of champagne and deal with the bloating of my sleeve and come what may whether or not my sleeve with stretch a bit.
The issue is, people thinking it's okay to drink real coffee, eat what they want right after they get sleeved. Your stomach gets cut from the bottom to the top and it's a massive surgery. Your stomach is extremely swollen inside and out and putting things like caffeine (which could cause ulcers), carbonation which is very rough and acidic on your swollen stomach or foods that are rough could cause a leak.
After you reach goal I think what you can and cannot tolerate is up to you. If you start throwing high carb food in, you will gain weight. It's a lifestyle change, not just a diet.

I don't understand it myself. I'm 9 weeks and I went another week without losing, after going 1-1/2 weeks going up and down a pound, up 2, down 2 the next day.
My son went through everything that I have been eating and I'm between 450-600 was my max calories a day. I'm doing the gazelle an hour a day, swimming 1-2 hours, going to for walks. I'm staying at 20-30 carbohydrates a day (sometimes less) 60-70 Protein.
Yesterday was my birthday and my husband and son kept nagging me about getting ice cream or yogurt and my son said listen Mom, you are doing everything right and it's like before, when you would diet hard and we would go out to eat and you would blow your diet and end up losing weight. Eat some no sugar added frozen yogurt and you will weigh 2 pounds less tomorrow.
I don't know why I said yes to them. I haven't cheated once on this diet, I don't even allow myself the sugar-free puddings anymore, I get almost all my carbs with my Protein shakes or vegetables. I said yes. I went to bed literally frustrated that I ate 1/4 cup of no sugar added FroYo (which tasted not that great) but they were happy with their chocolate and I was mad that so they could treat themselves, I had to agree to have some, otherwise I wouldn't eat it. I told them no more of this, because if they want yogurt, ice cream etc. it's up to them, but stop bringing me into it. They both felt bad, something I promised I would not do to them, because let's face facts, this is my journey and they have been supporting me but they shouldn't have to go without because I have to.
Well, guess what....I weigh two pounds less today and I was still under 600 calories yesterday and only hit 30 grams of carbs.
It makes zero sense. It makes no sense when it says "you are in starvation mode" on myfitnesspal.com It makes no sense that consistently, for the past 6 weeks I have had a deficit in my calories vs. exercise and yet I am not losing as fast as I want to.
What I can tell you is this though, bones are appearing where there was just chub, my arms are getting tight, the middle of my back is getting a chiseled dip and I look smaller, my clothes are hanging different this week than last week.
It messes with my head a bit. I give a lot of pep talks to people that post the "I am failing" especially when people tell themselves enough they are failures, they can find ways to actually fail, they give up and I won't give up and I don't want others to give up. I can't say I'm a failure at this, because I know eventually the weight will fall off and I worked too hard to fail.
Our biggest issue is using the scale consistently as a judge, jury and sometimes executioner to our self-esteem.
I moved the scale from the bathroom (which gets kicked and moved and the steam in there and every time I brush my teeth, go to the bathroom, before a shower before bed I wanted to hop on it. Seeing the weight gain from first thing in the am or throughout the day would cause my head to spin. I don't have the discipline to not reweigh myself when it's in my face, so I moved the scale to my spare bedroom. I weigh once a day, I get up, after my first Pee, I go in the spare room, shut the door, take off my nightgown and weight, so it's only once a day and it's upped my mood a bit.
Look at the whole picture, it's so easy to judge your success to someone elses. How many people look at my "total" weight loss and think wow, look at all she lost and she had surgery in June...I lost 10 pounds a month Pre-approval. If you look at my overall weight loss, guess what....it still equates to about 10 pounds a month. I started the plan in November had surgery in June and we're in August now! I lost faster after surgery (because I had to lose all that Water weight from the IV etc.) but we all got so used to that 1 or 2 pounds a day the first week and now, our body has to readjust.
I promise you, if you keep getting in your nutrtion, drink your 64 ounces of Water, chart your cals. carb. Protein and you do the right thing, the inches will fall off, if you add exercise into the mix, the fat will fall off and be replaced by lean muscle, and eventually the scale will reflect this.
I will reread this next time I start to wig out about the stupid scale.
    Good luck.

What are you drinking out of? Are you drinking out of a Water bottle? Glass did they give you one ounce medication cups? Water bottles hurt me for the first 5 weeks out. I can drink out of them now with no problems.
One ounce cups, med cups (30ml) took me 3 sips to finish. If you don't have them try using a shot glass, (measure it to see how many ounces).
I was able to get down 1 ounce (sip sip sip) 2nd ounce (sip sip sip) 3 ounce (sip sip sip) and then I couldn't do another. That was my limit then I needed a break. Do some sort of testing to see where your threshold is.
Some people had an easier time with room temperature water, some cold water. I found myself drinking a lot of decaff Peppermint tea with truvia the more of that I drank the easier water became.
    Best of luck to you.

MinaT got a reaction from youngs2twins in Feeling No Restriction Had Vsg June 7Th
Well I had surgery June 4th and I'm still on liquids.
You are saying you hope you have not gone through all of this for nothing...Are you keeping track on myfitnesspal.com of how many calories and how much Protein, carbs & liquid you are getting in?
Are you eating as much as you would before surgery? Have you lost anything at all? I imagine you have lost some weight, so any pounds lost is not a failure.
It is up to you to not put the wrong food in your mouth still and by looking at what you are eating, you are doing what you are suppose to be doing. The sleeve is a tool. You are lucky you aren't feeling sick or restrictions by eating those foods. But you are mentioning 2 ounces of tuna. That's not a lot. A Greek Yogurt, again not a lot.
If you ate a scrambled egg, a hardboiled egg 2 ounces of tuna and a greek yogurt, all at once, then you got some sort of issue there to worry about and then you should be worrying about the restriction issue. Eating one of these at a time without drinking for at least 1/2 hour afterwards, and you are doing great is wonderful.
Take this time while you are just learning to eat to chew your food and maybe stop worrying about what restrictions you should be feeling. After being on the diet roller coaster for as long as you have been, you know what you should and shouldn't be eating, and you know how much is too much. Trust me, try eating 2 hardboiled eggs and cottage cheese and the restriction will hit you like a two ton heavy thing and you will realize the truth of the sleeve. (don't try to eat 2 hardboiled eggs at once..I was being facetious.
I think you are doing well. I went from 330-128 and then gained it back. We both know what the issues is, we need to keep on moving....a lot and we need to up our Protein, keep lower carbs and most of this is still mental. Try some positive thoughts and maybe someone else will have more advise for you.
    Good luck

MinaT got a reaction from tyoung4ever@yahoo.com in How Long Until You Feel Normal?
I had surgery June 4th. It all depends on the surgery, how many stomach surgeries you had prior, (i had c-section, hysterectomy, gallbladder out lots of laprascopies in my life). So that means more adhesions. I also had a hernia repaired. I have gone grocery shopping and am not allowed to lift anything more than a gallon milk (per my doctor). I don't like to go too far away from a bathroom and I really hate drinking out of a Water bottle much because i swallow too much air and I still depend on drinking from small cups.
I have my own pool and haven't been able to go swimming and am hoping to go by the end of July or beginning of August. I was worried about losing my summer etc. etc. too, but my father said to me, having the surgery and getting this taken care of now, will give you next summer and many more summers to enjoy. What's losing part of one summer?
    Good luck.

Did you need to do a pre-approval phase at all? Did you need to have psychological counseling? Did you need to pre-diet or do a pre-op shake phase?
People that haven't been sleeved that read this - go into this 100% invested in it, because without that, you could hurt yourself.
At 4 weeks I got in trouble from my nutritionist for eating 1% cottage cheese (3 teaspoons!!) I was told I HAVE to be careful because the first 6 weeks you can get a leak, you could hear the strain when I said I also tried a few bites of a poached egg. Albeit, my nutritionist and surgeon are a lot more strict than many I have seen here, but really, you should know that the sugar is HORRIBLE for your sleeve, horrible for your diet and not good for you, period.
I think calling your surgeon, nutritionist, or getting some psychological counseling is what you are going to need. 8 days after surgery I could barely get down Water and a Protein shake. It's as though you are completely and utterly trying to sabotage yourself, you need to look at the big picture.
Many of us have families, and gatherings, and I have to cook for mine, but I don't get to eat what they are eating. I would stay away from them when they are eating things I can't eat.
The sleeve is a tool, you need to learn to use the tool and I'm going on six weeks out and I wouldn't even remotely think of ice cream or cake.
You need to realize right now you are just recovering from a MAJOR surgery. Having 85% of your stomach removed is extremely major. Your entire *stomach was cut in 1/2 and staples were put in. You are most likely suffering some depression after surgery and my suggestion is if you feel like you are going to lose control, go brush your teeth and drink some more Water, take something for acid, take a gas-x.
The grumbling you feel in your stomach is NOT hunger, it's acid, gas, or your stomach attempting to heal after a very serious surgery.
    Best of luck.

Thank you for not being so emotional you took my tone of my note to you in the spirit in which I intended. We are emotional right now. I don't ever cry, but I have cried because I put my 4x favorite pants in a bin...(yeah something to cry about and I bought 1x that are getting big. I admit I get frustrated a lot more than I used to.
I get on the scale and cuss and say dang, yesterday I wanted to be 209 because I was going to the doctor and that would put me at 90 pounds loss since I started the journey.
I'm not eating enough to lose the weight, my body is holding on to stuff right now, because I am slowing my metabolism down a bit.
I wanted to cry when I found out I have two more weeks of Protein shakes and I wasn't going to get to eat the tuna packet that I put in the fridge, but I'm fine with it. I see how swollen my belly is.
Did you know that I measured myself on 5/28 - my surgery was June 4th and though my sides, my back, my hips part of my waist (my lower) my boobs, arms, legs I lost a ton of inches, I gained 2 inches in my upper abdomen (by the big scar). Even though I have indents and I have a waistline now, the middle of my tummy is like a big old watermelon. I sat there and measured myself 3 more times, made my son measure me and had an internal hissy fit.
Yesterday I was told yep, you are swollen, that's where the hernia was that's where a lot of work was done, that's where your stomach was removed, 3 weeks out your tummy is so swollen on the inside and on the outside. That's why I have to go 5 weeks on liquid.
Be proud of yourself for your accomplishments and more than that, be kind to yourself Jessica, at 9 days out I just got my drain out and was still napping daily and couldn't put on underwear, and if I dropped something I couldn't pick it up.
Stop the negative talk, or self-doubt.
We all heal differently, we lose differently, but in the end if you believe in yourself YOU will succeed.

MinaT got a reaction from mzjonz75 in Why Am I Not Losing Weight?
    Jessica,
Approximately 3500 calories equals one pound of body weight. This means that you'd have to take in 3500 fewer calories than you usually do, over a period of time. This is a theory and can depend.
When you went on the pre-op shake diet, or if you lost weight "pre-surgery" that weight was Water weight. There is no note on how much you lost pre-surgery, there is no note on if you did a pre-op shake diet.
The less weight you have to lose, the harder it will be to lose.
You had surgery 9 days ago.
I lost 70 pounds pre-surgery. I went into surgery on a Monday and I weighed 229. I came home Friday and on Saturday morning I weighed 235. I gained weight. (very very normal). I had Water, tea, and I faked a bite or two of Jello, I drank about 3 teaspoons of broth, I took about 2 sips of Isopure frothy strawberry crap in all the days in the hospital.
9 pounds in 9 days is fantastic. The issues you are having right now are emotional issues. Once your body starts burning fat you become more emotional.
Here is a pound of fat... nice huh.
    http://www.efficientfitnessllc.com/images/pound_of_fat.jpg?89
The weight is not going to melt off you, this is something your doctor should have explained to you. I have weighed the same for 3 days in a row. I eat 350-400 calories a day right now in liquid form and I walk about 3 miles a day total.
Your body gets rid of the carbs first then goes after the fat, but sometimes you lose inches.
You aren't any different than anyone else, there is no guarantee of losing 1 pound a day. Just do what you are suppose to do, follow the rules and the weight will come off. Being female, be prepared for a day that you gain a pound or two because of hormones, it happens, it comes off eventually.

MinaT got a reaction from joy4you in How Is Everyone So Happy?
You are in a state of depression which is something everyone can understand, but it's above and beyond it because you knew that your food intake would be limited and it's as though you are mourning food in a way. The nausea isn't helping you and neither is the acid reflux. If regular shakes make you throw up - try something else like Syntrax nectar.
I hate the shakes too. (though I drank one every day 7 months pre-op with no problem). They made me gag, I would never bother eating or drinking them until I barfed though. Take some sips, put it away. I don't have a lot of money because of the surgery and other things, and finding any sort of Protein shake I could handle was getting on my nerves. I had an easier time trying to get down the Syntrax Nectar (which you can buy a 2lb tub of Fuzzy nectar, Ice Tea, Lemonade for like $33.00 (cheaper than buying at Syntrax - it's $59.00 there).
I am not hitting 80 grams of Protein a day, you aren't going to become protein deficit in this short of time. Worry about your Water, chew the Vitamins slowly. I find getting it down with skim milk is better. Try getting in a Vitamin B12 sublingual (goes under your tongue) maybe that will lift your spirits.
If eating with your family is causing tears, then don't eat with them for now. Do you have kids?
My father is embarrassed to eat in front of me, it causes my family anxiety if they see that they are eating something they KNOW I can't eat ...yet, or that used to be my favorite. They went through this surgery with me, and watching someone have this surgery is stressful not just on us, but on the family too. I had a few days where I felt depressed and sorta moody, but I put a different attitude on things. Why should I make them miserable because of a decision I made, that was still the right decision, but it's something I am not having a good time with.
I'm happy because I have two choices, find something that will work for me and try to stay positive or gag stuff down, and be miserable, moody and make everyone around me miserable and moody too. It's not fair to them.
Sometimes happiness is only achievable when you work at it. Do I feel happy all the time, hell no, I hate my Protein Shakes, I decided to go back every other day in the morning because they have more protein in it. If you keep looking for the worst, that is what you are going to see.
Find some positives in your day, don't eat with your family. Are you still on full liquids? Are you on purees? Not sure what phase you are on. I was on full liquids 5 weeks, I just started out with purees. I tried tuna pureed. I had 1.5 ounces of it with light mayo and 3 teaspoons of cottage cheese. That went down great. Then for dinner yesterday, while my husband and son ate pork chops, vegetables and a side dish. I tried the chicken can pureed, which I didn't make liquidy enough it stuck in my throat and I felt horrible the entire night, but I went for a walk, and I realized this is a decision I cannot take back and truthfully I have to change my attitude and look at the positives.
If you are having a lot of acid reflux get on a different PPI.
It honestly seems like this is about mourning food and not being hungry, and perhaps you are trying to get down too much. You can't compare what your family is eating to you...it's unrealistic. Realize you will be able to eat the same things as them in limited quantity in the future, but you are only 4 weeks out of having a serious major surgery.
Think about getting some counseling. The sleeve is a tool to control the size of your stomach but it doesn't fix what caused you to overeat in the first place.
I still hate my shakes, I drank them 7 months prior to surgery and they taste like elmers glue with chocolate, the smell of chocolate makes me want to hurt, but it doesn't make me regret my decision.
I hope you turn the corner soon and things start looking up for you. I wish you the best of luck.

After a meal, maybe take a little walk or do dishes and stay upright with a little bit of movement to make sure everything is going down, plus it will help your metabolism to move instead of laying down after eating.

MinaT got a reaction from seattlesweetheart in Frustrated At 8 Weeks Post-Op
    Good luck.

Do you now have any issues with Gastric Reflux? Have you had to take any sort of protonics? Do you sometimes eat and choke on your food? Do you have acid reflux when you lay down at night? If you answered yes to these questions then I would bypass Sleeve and go to Bypass. I think they are both good surgeries, but with the Gastric Sleeve, there is a greater tendency towards acid reflux. If you have reflux prior to sleeve, it could only get worse. I've always had a reflux issue had the sleeve and the problems got severe enough that with a bmi of 34 I had to go back in and convert to bypass.
There are people that believe if you are a chronic sweet tooth eater that you should chose bypass over sleeve, however there are a lot of posts by people with comments like "I ate Cookies and ice cream and I didn't dump and now I'm really upset". Let that sink in a bit. If you have gastric bypass and you are eating Cookies and ice cream and you are "mad"...after undergoing a serious surgery that you are not even trying to change your habits on your own and you expect a surgery to do everything for you....well, all you can do is shake your head.
Speak with your doctor and continue your research. I myself would have done bypass had I known the issues I would have the acid and the choking on meats due to spasms, which are more common than I thought they were. Pre sleeve I never read anything about 'esophageal spasms' or serious acid reflux.
Note: Not everyone that gets sleeved has this problem, I just always had a problem my entire life with acid reflux and was on two omeprazoles a day. I had acid issues drinking Water.

I work from home full time....I originally planned on just taking 3 days off.....That's still my plan....sort of....But I decided to schedule the whole week off....surgery will be on a Monday.....so I'll schedule the whole week off but told my manager I may cancel some of the time if I don't need all of it. He will also be fine if something should happen that causes me to need more time.
So I think the bottom line is you don't really know.....but probably best to plan for a little more than you think you'll need just in case.

It's also worth considering that there's a sleeve-to-bypass revision board on this forum. There are no revisions from bypass short of the very, very rare reversal. I had originally wanted the sleeve, but was advised against it because of my acid reflux, and this is one of the things that made me comfortable with the bypass.
Do most people with the sleeve love it and have success with only minor/no complications? Certainly! It's an amazing surgery. But I did find something reassuring in the fact that I was having the 'end line' surgery, so to speak, and there wouldn't be any chance for revisions in my future. I want this to be one and done.
