I know a lot of people think "what the h3ll have I done". I was one of them. Your body I, furious at you for the lack of food, you're swollen from surgery still, and all those hormones are pouring out of the fat that is melting off of you. But I promise it is fleeting. It happens around a month to 6 weeks. When your diet is released to more normal foods. When your body adjusts to the hormones and diet. And when YOU start noticing the difference in your own appearance. Hang on. It's not easy, and mentally draining at first. But soon you'll forget you have been sleeved. Thinks become normal again.

I order normally. It's not everyone's business. I just eat the leftovers the next meal or day. It's funny how they look at you and you've only eaten 1/4 of the meat and none of the sides.. LOL

I think I am one of the few lucky folks. Never ate anything that didn't agree. I eat spicy all the time. Love kimchi. Now I just make better choices... Smaller portions. Just haven't tried sweets... They were my down fall on my way up the weight latter. So going to wait on that until I am closer to goal.

Star1221 got a reaction from Dreamingofhealth in How the heck do you keep your carbs under 50 when a banana is 30 carbs?!
Since you're on regular food, your possibilities are limitless. For instance, this morning I ate a scrambled egg with cheese and a slice of turkey bacon. (3 carbs). Snack- Beef jerkey (3 carbs). lunch will be a grilled chicken salad with light dressing (about 6 or 7 carbs). Dinner- Garlic shrimp over baby spinach. (2 carbs). I tend to eat a lot of salads, but I love salads. Plus it helps keep things moving. You can eat any meat. I have even fried chicken breasts in soy flour... Actually tasty and only like 2 carbs in the little bit used to bread it. If you google low carb recipes, there are THOUSANDS. And if you get your carbs from the right things, veggies and a little fruit, it's not that bad. Good luck on the finding something new to eat. You just have to look at food differently now.

Star1221 reacted to PdxMan in My VSG Life
Lately, I have had a few people send me PM's with this question and it is an oft posted thread to which I usually reply with a summarized version of this, but this has been my basic plan over the last 3 years, so I thought I would post a recent reply to a PM here:
As far as the few days after surgery, I'm not going to lie to you. It is tough. The whole first month. You are drinking your meals for the first couple weeks and then soft foods after. I often whined to my wife, "I just want something with texture in my mouth!!!" About a month out, like so many others, I questioned, "What the HELL have I done to myself!!??" But, for me, the bottom line was to just keep putting one foot in front of the other and do the next right thing. These feelings subsided as the scale began to move and I adopted a new method of eating.
As far as what I have done since then ... well ... that is a huge question with a very lengthy response. If you are viewing from a web browser, you can hover over my name and a pop up will show. From there, you can select My Content and read the hundreds of threads I have responded on. But in a nutshell, I followed the guidelines closely. Those are:
Don't drink just before, during or immediately after eating (it is difficult at first, but you get used to it)
    Take smaller bites
    Chew ridiculously well
Put the utensil down in between bites
Evaluate how that bite felt. How does my stomach feel? Stop eating one bite before you are full. You are going to learn a new definition of what being full means, so you need to take the time to figure this out.
Exercise. Find something which will get your heart pumping up in your target heart range for weight loss. If you are going to take the time to exercise, then make it worth your while.
Only weigh once a month. If you can't do that, then no more than once a week. DO NOT WEIGHT DAILY!!! This only leads to disappointment as there is no way to lose everyday. You will have stalls. This is a normal way your body is going to react to the drastic reduction in caloric intake. So many folks get discouraged and cry over a tub of ice cream. Self sabotage is our killer.
Don't eat processed foods. Take the time to learn how to prepare nutritionally balanced meals. Only eat things which are nutritionally relevant. Use a food tracking software (MyFitnessPal) and track everything that goes into your mouth until you find your groove.
Understand your motivation for everything you put into your mouth. Why am I eating right now? Is it because I am hungry or am I eating for some other reason? Bored ... tired ... angry ... lonely? Try to only eat when your body need nutrition.
Get the sleep your body needs. If is so much easier to make the next right move when our bodies are well rested.
Stay active in a support group, whether here on BariatricPal or a local WLS support group. It is easy to forget where we came from once things start going well and we may fall back into old habits.
Remember that you are important. Give yourself permission to make yourself a priority in your life. Sometimes, at the minor cost of someone else. Don't make things more difficult by not setting yourself up for success.
Do I do all of this perfectly? No, but these are my guidelines to which I strive for. I've been maintaining for over 2 years now and this has been a lifestyle I feel I can maintain.

If no one ever started a new topic this website would get slow and no one would discuss anything. People would mass exodus to a new website that people enjoyed discussing all topics no matter if they've been asked a million times or for the first time ever (which is unlikely at this point).
I've been around a very long time and I've seen it all. I still come here happy to help, so I'm not one of the folks you speak about that are tired of it. If I get a little burned out I just excuse myself for awhile until I'm ready to come back. Not a big deal really...

Star1221 reacted to endless80 in I Am So Angry When People Think Surgery Is The Easy Option!
I used to get pissed at this but then I thought about it, it kind of is an easier option which is why most of us do it. Let's just start being honest with ourselves.
The only time I've noticed myself getting offended at someone's ignorance though is when they use that idea that it's an easier option to trivialize my opinions about weight loss. As if I have no say in the matter at all. As if I didn't risk my life to lose 100+ And honestly, it's usually the fattest people who do that because their addicted to their own vices and I challenge them. And I've literally said to someone 'don't you dare trivialize my experience and hard work because you can't handle it.'
Shut them up real quick. You have to re-find your power when you make decisions like this. People are only bullies if you let them bully you.
When you lose weight, no matter how you do it, everyone will internalize and personalize your experience to them.

Biotin did not work for me. I took all the supplements, shampoos, upped carbs, upped protein.. To no prevail. But, it started about 3 or 4 months out and lasted a couple months to where it was a lot. No one ever noticed, but I did. Then it just stopped. Each person is different. Some have none, some have it bad. But it will stop, and it will come back. It has to do with when your hairs natural shedding happens and part from the anesthesia, and lastly.. Rapid weight loss. So just get your Protein, take your dr prescribed supplements, and it will be done soon. Good luck on your journey

I researched for years and settled on the sleeve. It seemed to be the perfect fit. Just like @@CowgirlJane said, each surgeon has their "favorite" surgery, so might even help to get 2 different consults. "It's not going to be easy, but nothing worth having usually is." (Scrubs geek lol) And if you have any specific questions, no one on here minds getting messaged... At least not in my time on here. Feel free to ask everyone questions. Good luck on your journey

Here's the difference. You're not really hungry. You've just taught your brain that you need to keep eating due to the habit you created over the years. The sleeve will give you the time it takes to develop new habits of eating just what you need.
Your body can get by just fine on the low calorie limited intake. It's the head hunger that is convincing you that you need more.
All the sleeve is gonna do is limit what you eat. The rest is up to you. Can you outsmart it. If that is you intention, then sure, you can eat around the limits. The idea is to take advantage of the tool and use it to re-teach your brain. In order to do that, you have to be on board with both the desire and the discipline to succeed.

I'm 16 months out, and I had a capacity like you mention (but never vomited even once) for the first 5 months or so. Then it increased a little more at about 9 months, and at about 14 months I noticed another increase. I can hold about 8 ounces or a cup of almost anything fairly comfortably, except for dense Protein (meat) which is about 6 oz. I wish it weren't true, but it is. I don't think I stretched my stomach, either. I've been pretty careful. I just think its the way it is. I think I could have eaten more sooner, but I just really watched it.

My name is Star. I'm a 30 year old mother of one beautiful daughter (she's 1). I met my adoring husband when I moved from New York to Mississippi when I was 13. Of those 16 years, we've been married for 10. I have a BA in psychology but don't use it. I work in a call center as operations manger for a very well known computer company.
I love to read when I have time, but music is my passion. Growing up in the 80's I got the best of all the music. From 70's Clapton to 80's Starship. I played basketball and soccer in high school though I was always a functioning chunk. Size 16 or up since I was 12. I play several instruments and was in musicals as well.
For free time now... Wait... What free time lol. One year old and working 10 hours a day fixes that. I got sleeved for me. The first thing I had done for me... Maybe ever. Excited to see what I look like under all this fluff. I've enjoyed reading everyone's introductions :-)
