DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! got a reaction from boogie2dope in Infection Scare!!
I'm actually currently on Bactrim for an infection. Not for Lap Band surgery (that was almost 8 months ago), but for an emergency strangulated hernia surgery.
I had redness around the drain coming out of my stomach so I went in to have it removed early the Sunday before last. They removed it but it remained very red and a little sore. Imagine my shock when a week later, on Saturday, the hospital calls me and says "You need to contact your doctor, your wound culture came back positive for a Staph infection".
I panicked momentarily because I know Staph can be really nasty. When my doctor's office called he told me there's different types of Staph, that the kind I had wasn't horrible, and he was calling me in a prescription.
I have been on the antibiotic for 6 days now. All the redness and soreness is completely gone and it's healing nicely.
Good luck, I'm sure yours will clear right up too!

You're not going to find good data because of the length of time it's been approved in the USA. The Lap-Band brand bands were just FDA approved in 2001 and the Realize brand bands were approved in 2007. As with any new medical device, changes are made as problems are found, and that has been the case with the Lap-Band as well. A good example is how they used to use 4cc bands but they now have found bands ranging from 9cc to 14cc to be safer and more effective long term. So, the only place you will now find the older model bands used is in places like Mexico (which is one of the reasons most US surgeons won't touch patients banded in Mexico).
However, with that said, I have met more than a few on this board who've had their bands over 6 years, and that's with the smaller 4cc bands too.
The Lap-Band is no different than any other implanted medical device. Pace makers, insulin pumps, and artificial joints won't last forever either. Just like them, the Lap-Band does require ongoing medical supervision and if you live long enough, will inevitably need replacing/updating too,

DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! got a reaction from kmt1973 in Dr. In My Area No Longer Does Lapband. Ugh!
Entire states aren't stopping the use of the band. Select surgeons are.
The reason so many surgeons are stopping use of the band is because of the high patient failure, not the high band failure. They're tired of removing and revising band patients- regardless of the cause. Only 5% of complications with the band are by no fault of the patient. Sadly, it seems a lot of patients go into this surgery totally ignorant to the facts of what is necessary to be successful with the band. Some are aware of the facts but choose to ignore them and misuse the band anyway. Because of this, they end up with a lot of slips and erosion as a result.
The next time you see a thread about someone throwing up for weeks or months, or intentionally having their band too tight, or chronically over eating? There's your reason for so many band complications. It's not the band it's the people totally misusing it.
