    January fitness challenge

Hey fitness freaks. How's everyone's first week of the new year? The dreaded crazy holidays are behind us and we can get in with a renewed regular schedule again...thankfully. I know some of you are getting hammered with a vicious winter. It was 22 here last night....for Houston that's damn cold. But it's not bad weather for running and I'm pleased with my running so far this month. After just 7 days ove already got 30.2 miles running. My first trail race is coming up in 11 days and I'll have another one the following weekend. I'm looking forward to many happy trail races this year. Love those trails, inspite of the occasional broken toe. Keep going everyone. Y'all are all doing so great.

    Aha! Great point.

    I am unaproachable now?

I know. It seems some guys thought you were looking for volunteers. Lol.
  4. It sounds like you're doing great and have very little inflammation. That's a good thing. I was very similar. I could drink almost normal...I just couldnt chug any longer. But as was noted...most studies show that you cannot absorb more than 30 grams of Protein in one sitting. So the rest is wasted. Consider drinking half of that mixture and saving the other half for 2 hours later.
  5. Well congrats to you. Day one gone...you'll be on the other side before you know it. The dizzyness is a normal reaction, especially if you're still working out hard. You might consider easing up on the workouts this next 2 weeks since you're body is going through a massive adjustment period....but then again if it makes you feel better stick with them. Funny story...my wife too went on the preop diet with me....and the post op diet. About 2 weeks post op I went to take out the trash, and there was an empty dorito bag in the trash can...stuffed way down in there but I could see it through the bag. God bless my wonderful wife, I never told her I saw it. I appreciated that she was not eating them in front of me.

    Muscle Loss Sucks

Most likely there's muscle loss as well. You can't lose 100 pounds or more without losing some muscle...maybe even alot of muscle. Very difficult to maintain all of our muscle with the sudden drastic cut in calories. But we can minimize the damage as much as possible by keeping up with the Protein and strength training.
  8. Feedyoureye??? The train to fat town??? Love it!!! I was just telling a friend....The truth is I'm not sure we are ever "there"....but we are head and shoulders above where we were. For me it's a balancing act of appreciating that while still trying to improve.

2014 - Where have all the "ole-timers" gone?

Wow...I remember some of those folks you mentioned in the first group. Of course...PDXMan was one of the first people that opened my eyes. Littlemissdiva. Sleeve of steel and Cheri too....and Feedyoureye all still around. A couple of others that come to mind are Massindex and Rootman. I really followed them in the beginning. And I wouldn't have remembered blackberry except you mentioned the bodybuilding picture....yes ma'am. I absolutely remember. Wow...amazing physique.

    NSV lately?

Since having my TT in September....I tuck in everything. I'm even tucking in my tshirt into my running shorts. My wife can't stand it. I told her I'm making up for lost time....all those years where nothing could be tucked in.

Aerobic Exercise vs Weight Training? HELP?!?

If I had to do this over again I would spend way more time doing weights - I am the poster child of overemphasizing one of your two choices. I went with cardio only. Sure, I have impressive weight loss on my ticker at the bottom but the price I'm paying for that is loss of strength. I put 150lbs on a bench press machine like I used to do years ago when I was doing both weights and cardio and I couldn't budge it! I found that I could only do a fraction of it. There are probably lots of people here that could speak more definitively on this but I believe your weight loss isn't going to slow that much by lifting weights AND frequent body fat measurements as well as measuring yourself will show that the sleeve is working for you. Thanks for your honestly. I also really appreciate your links in your quote! Eyeroll? Something you didn't like? I'm thinking maybe she misquoted you? Perhaps wrong thread??? I'm hoping.

    Self-inflicted Hip bursitis

My understanding is as long as there is inflammation ice and heat can be beneficial. The first 24 hours it should be ice to reduce initial onset inflammation. After that it should just be heat to improve circulation and healing. Now if you go out and aggravate it with too much exercise like I know you're gonna do, go back to the ice again for a few hours to prevent further inflammation.

    Joined a Gym FINALLY!

Congrats in taking that big step. You will enjoy much improved health from regular exercise. And yes I've noticed trainers tend to put every new client in that same box....like we've never worked out before.

    Morning Weight or Evening Weight?

I use morning weight because it will be the most consistent. But honestly the only thing that matters is to pick a time and use it consistently. Keep in mind weight can vary 2-5 pounds on any given day due to water retention, waste build up....what matters is the over all trend. That's why weighing once a week or even once a month is more accurate (not the mention less stressful) than once a day.

Aerobic Exercise vs Weight Training? HELP?!?

^^^ agree with this. A well rounded program including both cardio and strength training is best. Don't think about exercise as a weight loss tool. Think about it as a means to feel better, live longer and thoroughly increase your quality of life. Improved health and the ability to do more and enjoy a more active life will be your rewards. As for weight loss....yes strength training will slow it some but remember you will be very limited on "building muscle" since you are eating so few calories. What you are mostly doing is preserving and strengthening the muscle you have....which is very important.

    Welcome new vets

I think this is going to be a good year for the vets forum. Hopefully more and more of us will be sticking around. As the sleeve surgery gets older and more prominent, there should be veteran sleevers in greater numbers each year.

    Surgery Date set 2-3-14

From what I understand gall bladder removal is more painful. Honestly sleeve surgery is not very painful at all. The hardest part is the lack of Water and food you can take in at the beginning. It will leave you weak and fatigued, but not really in much pain usually.

Quest Bars are not what they say they are

If you want to count net carbs you simply subtract the grams of fiber from the over all carb total....that is net carbs. The fiber still has calories, but what it doesn't have in the insulin response that the rest of the carbs have. Therefore, if insulin resistance/blood sugar disorders are a problem, then net carbs tells the real story of how much that particular food will affect you...... ......or something like that.

Veteran forum, for vets a year out?

Alex said the software controls will be in place within 2-6 weeks. Once in place, members will be unable to post in the vets forum unless they meet the criteria. That will take care of it.....I hope.

Really. Why not on apps? The apps are a different beast. The ignore feature is another thing that doesn't work on the apps.
