    exercise time of day

If I do them in the same day, I try to make sure I get my resistance training in first (usually midday) since my muscles are rested and I want to be able to train with full power. As for cardio, I'm just looking to get my heart rate up and not so much for performance or getting stronger, so I'll save that for last. I can do it right after my resistance training or later in the day. Just makes sense for me and my goals, but necessarily for others. Guess it depends on their goals and body's response to exercise.

    Great job Euroyen!
  3. For the sleevers out there...... What is your Dr's stance on taking anti inflammatory meds like ibuprofin, Aleve, etc?

    Personal trainer

"hmk"....sounds like a great plan to decide to do this, educate yourself and learn good form before diving in. Get motivated, form a plan with goals in mind and stick to your plan, ease into it and you'll be glad you took this step. I wish you the best! Also, "failure" in the gym is a good thing. When you get to the point where you pushing it more, muscle failure and time under tension is what will make your muscles respond, strengthen and grow. So don't be afraid of failure, get a little out of your comfort zone and do it.....you got this!

    Death and sadness.

Sorry to hear Linda, but maybe venting and telling about it a little is part of the healing process. I wish you the best in recovery. I went through a one and a half year period several years ago (2007/2008) that was very trying and painful as well. During that period I went through a divorce, sick for 4 straight months which ended in having my tonsils removed at my advanced age, lost my oldest brother and best friend to brain cancer, shortly after that my mother died and then I lost my job.....just a week before Christmas. My family was very close and all of a sudden family life as I knew it was ripped apart. I never resorted to drugs or being an alcoholic, but I did some serious emotional eating and regained all of the weight I had lost prior to that crazy year and a half. I love life and this whole journey thing, but AT TIMES.....life can just plain suck. I just look at my life as that roller coaster ride, most of the turns are good and there are more ups than downs for my life, so I am thankful for that.

    Anti Inflammatory

Thanks for the input. It seems some of us get conflicting information or varying at the least. Seems like it can cause problems, but if someone has some more serious issues, perhaps it's worth it to take if absolutely necessary. Kind of a "risk vs reward" thing perhaps.

    Anti Inflammatory

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I spoke with my surgeon about a year and a half ago (1 year post op) and he advised me to not take them. My nutritionist said with the sleeve, it's not something I have to absolutely avoid, just try to limit it to when I really need it and take with some food. He said my Dr was thinking I was a bypass patient. Which led to other issues and me not being in contact with them since and not speaking with them any longer. I should've provided that info on my original post.....sorry about that. Anyway, not that I need to take them often, but if I do, just curious as to if they would really lead to dire problems.

    exercise.....where to begin?

I love yoga but found that unless I did Bikram (hot yoga), it didn't really increase my fitness. It is a great transition to moving more and that's really what this is all about. If you find a trainer that you like and that motivates you- it is so worth it. I remember when I thought I would pass out using 5# dumbbells, now I use 20# dumbbells and get excited each time I progress to heavier weights. Here's an inspiration photo for you! : Way to go "erp".....looking strong!

Hey there stranger.....glad you made it over to the dark side....welcome!
  18. https://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/fitness-blogger-takes-bmi-standards-to-task-185549538.html Thought this article was interesting and helps reassure me (and maybe others as well) about my rather high BMI of 29 and still being overweight and borderline obese......even after losing close to 80 pounds. Personal opinion.....I wouldn't stop at just changing BMI charts, I would eliminate it entirely since it in no way takes into account a person's body composition percentage (fat vs muscle).
  19. That's why I normally don't pay the BMI charts any attention. I know the article is mostly about women, but most of us guys think it's BS too. I'm holding steady around 15-16% body fat, with turning 42 in a couple of months, I'll take that.

    exercise.....where to begin?

"Latido"....did you have any complications from your surgery? I'm thinking at nearly 2 weeks post op, you should be feeling good enough to walk and move around. Have you gone back for a follow up just to make sure everything is ok? "Karen82"....like "erp" stated, just gradually build up. Your body will eventually learn to adapt and you can increase intensity and duration little by little. You certainly don't want to dive right in if you don't have much experience with exercise. So find some kind of activity you like and gradually build up and motivate yourself and you'll stick with it.

    Gym routine help please

I agree with "Racewalker" for the most part. Too many variables exist to accurately tell you if lifting will help with skin issues....age, skin type, time elapsed since weight loss, amount of total weight loss, etc. I do think that if you have very minor issues with loose skin, lifting consistantly and building muscle can help some. But if you have major loose skin, even the most dedicated lifting routine will probably do very little to improve the loose skin since we gain fat easier and without a ceiling as opposed to the difficulty in gaining muscle to fill in where the fat once existed. I don't know for sure, but my guess is that lifting consistanly, my diet and the fact that I've lost less weight than the average sleever, all contributed to my lack of loose skin. Regardless of skin goals from lifting, a good sensible approach to resistance training has many other healthy benefits for us.

Would LOVE to be a bodybuilder post-surgery

"Haddocks"...I think it's possible, but you have to get your diet nearly perfect and timining of your meals is important along with the actual workouts to stimulate the growth. My goal is more on strength and lifting numbers than on bodybuilding, but they often go hand in hand and only slight differences in the approach (mostly with the lifts). I've been able to really reach some nice strength goals, but it's takes some work....along with a lot of patience (I'm 2 and a half years post op). You can do it and wish you the best!
