  1. I love Dr. Shayani. He is willing to answer any and all questions you have. You can email him and he responds. He has a kind and caring personality. He works out of several hospitals, so my experience will be different from yours. The insurance I had dictated a 6month diet with my primary care physician. The diet after your week post op is Protein, he wants you to eat meat, Beans, cheese, Protein Bars, and nuts only. I have had good success with it. I am down 55 lbs since my surgery may 2nd. Everyone is different, so do not expect the same. I also incorporated circuit training 2 nights and walking 4 nights (3-4 Miles).

Hello all... I am a new comer. I will be attending a seminar with Dr. Shayani in Bolingbrook on Aug 18, 2011. I was just wondering if there are any lap-banders that already used Dr. Shayani? What was your experience? How are the nurses, hospital, and the location? How long was the process from day 1 up until the actual surgery day? What are Dr. Shayani's requirements? Do you need a referral? Does he require a 6month pre-diet? Any advice and positive feedback or just general info on the doctor's character and personality will be greatly appreciated. By the way, I'm 33yrs old, my BMI is 51, and my insurance covers most of the surgery... Yay!!! Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

  2. I was diagnosed 9 years ago with Type 1 diabetes. The day I was diagnosed, I was also told I also have Hypothyroidsim (which means my thyroid is underactive). I was placed on Synthroid and to be quite honest, when I would try to lose weight I would be successful. This all stopped about a year ago, it has seemed virtually impossible for me to lose weight. My levels are monitored every three months by my Endocronologyst and I am in control. I am scared to death that I am going to pay all this money to get my band and that I will not lose any weight. I would really appreciate any input from anyone out there with an underactive thyroid and what you've gone through and how you're doing on the band. I don't care if the weight takes a little longer to come off, what I'm scared to death about is that I won't lose anything.

I have type 2 diabetes and have been hypothyroid for 20 yrs. I was banded may 2 this year and to date have lost 55lbs. Not everyone is the same, I can only speak for myself. I would think as long as you are on the correct dose you should be able to lose weight. I actually had to decrease my synthroid dose after surgery after my pcp checked my tsh and it was 0.

  3. I had my 2nd fill last week and I can notice a difference in the amount of food I can put into my mouth. I am really trying to be more in tuned with the soft stop signals to avoid discomfort. But last night it didn't work. My family went out to dinner to Celebrate my last day of teaching summer school-my vacation officially began!

I looked at the menu choices and decided a sizzling steak would be a great option. It's not that big and I could easily bring half home. I had 1 glass of sangria and nibbled on the salad. The steak came and I had 2 pieces. I cut them up nice and small. Well all of a suddent I got SO sick-it sort of felt like heartburn, but with the need to throw up (gross I know). I made 4 trips to the bathroom within 15 minutes. I am not one of these people wh can make themselves throw up-it goes against my nature! I was slimming like crazy. I manage to throw up in the toilet a little, but that was no relief. I went back to the dinner table after my 4th trip and said I need to go home. Fortunately dinner was over anyway. I brought home my dinner. Outside I felt sick again and threw up slime. Then I felt sick again and stood outside the car. WTH! When I got home I felt better.

I kept thinking about my upcoming cruise and now I am thinking about not getting a fill for it. I still need to learn what my body can and can not tolerate. I am guessing a steak is a no-no! Maybe I should just stick with seafood (which I love anyway).

So I learned that there are 2 kinds of being stuck -I've experienced both:

    1. Hard stuck- when it feels like a rock is caught in the middle of your chest. You are slimming like a rabid dog! This is so painful you feel as if you may have to go to the ER if things don't improve! This happened to me when I was standing over chinese take out and pooped a shrimp in my mouth whole (during my 1st fill stage). OMG- it was the worst pain ever-seriously!

    2. Regular Stuck -this feels like really, REALLY bad heartburn with the need to vomit. Slimming happens at this point too. You can sit and feel a need to walk around.

I guess I am headed to GNC to stock up on some papaya enzymes to keep in my purse.

Does anyone have foods that they must avoid on the Band for fear of being stuck? What are good choices for dining out?

I was told not to eat steak and grilled chicken. I have eaten chicken baked in oven and from kentucky fried chicken. The kfc baked went well one time and the next time it was dry and my body wanted it out. I find shrimp goes down well and hamburgers. what do the papaya enzymes do? Does it help break down beef?

I also have experienced the slimming thing. I noticied it more when I ate too much after getting my first fill.
