Hello and Happy Fathers Day to those of u that r papas! I returned from an action packed 4 day stay at the local reservoir! My son and I participated in the Recon Run- a 5k obstacle course. The events were okay- I expected more challenging obstacles, but we had a blast nevertheless. There were two huge walls- one with a drop, some barbed wire, a mud pit, some mid sized walls to hop over, and a swim. Swimming in tennis shoes is TOUGH! We had lots of fun. We also kayaked and kayaked and kayaked some more. Lol! Best part was watching the sunset while out on the lake in relatively calm waters. I'm loving being fit. Camping is so much more fun! Love it! Here's a pic of my youngest and I after the run.

    Hi all,
Massindex suggested this discussion. I was sleeved 12/15/11. Had a bout with malnutrition (ok, I won the Olympic swim for the semester, and beat the guy who had won EVERY swim challenge at the rec center in history) and seem to work on those a lot. I'm more of a swimmer, but running is right behind that. I'm looking for anything we can share and think of because PICC lines and backpack TPN interfere with my life. Thankfully my surgeon no longer will!
I'm looking at triathlons too, if any one is interested.

Shortly after this story was published, I was contacted by NPR to participate in a round table discussion. During the course of the 45 minutes we were on the air, we discussed my journey and whether weight loss surgery was the answer for many people. I was on with the head of UCLA's Bariatric Surgery unit and discussed the VSG and other options for people with weight issues. As soon as the podcast is available, probably tomorrow, I'll post a link to it and you can down it.
It was hard to come 'out of the closet' to tell everyone about my surgery. Even now there are comments that somehow I'm weak for having the surgery and not doing this on my own. As the doctor on the show pointed out, 97-99% of the people who try to do this on their own without surgery will fail and likely gain even more weight. Without addressing all the issues, you are setting yourself up for failure.
    Enjoy my story...

I agree with Bean. Protein is required within 30 minutes after completing a workout.

Breaking up the running training routine makes this so wonderful and addictive. Training in all three disciplines is what makes this so much fun! It's great for the change of pace! :-) I knew you could do it.

If you try the same workout twice and can't do it, it might not be a bad idea to back up to a previous day.....just to give your body a bit of extra rest. Then you'll blow right past that sticking point.

Tuesday night came down with severe intestinal pain and my wife convinced me to go to emergency. They diagnosed me with pancreatitis and admitted me. After a couple of days of poking, prodding and running every test they could think of, they couldn't find the cause. My cardiologist and my gastrointestinal specialist came by to talk with me. After filling me on their inconclusive results, they asked if I had any questions. I said, "Just one. I have a half marathon on Sunday. Can I still run it?" The cardiologist looked at me said "You know you're in the hospital, right?" I laughed and told him yes but I was serious. They looked at each other, shrugged, and told me they couldn't think of a good reason not to do it if I felt good enough. Picked up my bib number yesterday. Everyone thinks I'm crazy but they just don't understand the highs. It can be a little addictive and I know I already have an addictive personality. Am I out of my mind? I feel pretty damn good, other than a little sluggish from breaking my training regime.

Still need to work on this nutrition thing but inspite of that, I was able to turn in a 4:41 in my first full marathon, Pacers were so good I probably could have finished at 4:30 but my quad knotted up at 25 miles and I walked from 25 to near the finish before jogging across the finish line. Couldn't stand the thought of walking across the finish line. Even though I thought it might be stupid at the time, I biked to the airport and home for my flight to the marathon. Turns out the bike ride home was one of the best things I could have done to loosen me up. Legs feel great.

Bought my first pair of running shoes this weekend (New Balance- I have wide Fred Flintstone feet). Did day one, week one of C2K today. Didn't quite finish so will be repeating it tomorrow or Friday. I can't believe I am running by choice, no one is chasing me with an axe like in a horror movie.

We don't know anything about the heat here in Las Vegas, Fiddleman. I have a Fuel Belt with 4 bottles that I use for runs up to 8 miles and then use my Camelback hydration backpack for everything else over 8. If I run in the late afternoon when it's really hot, I limit my runs to no more 4 miles. Problem is that even my 4:30 am runs can be at 85 degrees so there are times when I have no choice but to go to the treadmill.

I'm now a week gallbladder post-op. See the Dr tomorrow to get the stitches out and hoping he will release me to normal activities in a couple weeks. Started walking this morn and hope to get back on my C25K program then. Starting over but not giving up!
