Just How Much Is Everyone Exercising?

I swim 5 miles per week, bike 100-150 miles per week and run about 30 miles per week on average, sometimes more and sometimes less as I taper into a race. Lately it doesn't feel like it's enough since my times are plateauing. I'm going start cutting back on the quantity and focus more on the quality of the workout in the future.

If you can run 2 miles, you can do a 5K. Go for it!

    Triathlon/ 1/2 Marathon

One thing I didn't mention before is PB&J. It's something I consumed during the Ironman 70.3 World Championships and carried with me on the 56 mile portion of the bike ride. I got such a big lift from it that I carried it with me the next weekend when I did the NorCal Half Marathon and posted my PR over the distance.

    5K Run In Az

Sounds interesting but I'm doing a half Ironman in San Diego with a bunch of Navy Seals the next day. Your race sounds more normal

    Paying For Surgery

I took a loan out against my 401k. I figured I would be dead soon enough if I didn't get this done. Great investment in me.

    I'm A Triathlete!

Lisa:), the back ache happens because of the changes to our body core muscles. Core training is just something you have to bring in slowly and work through the pain. I just finshed the Ironman World Championships and my back bothered me for several days. I got right back into training and went and ran a half marathon the next weekend. When I'm exercizing is the only time my back doesn't really seem to bother me.
  8. Congratulations, Rootman! I understand the feelings well.

    For The Bike Riders!

250? You should be able to ride any standard bike, even the narrow road bike tires will support that.

    Ironman

It's been a busy few months so I haven't been on the board for a while. I just finished (survived might be a better choice here) my first Ironman 70.3, competing here in Las Vegas at the Ironman World Championships. Brutal day with temperatures of 100 degrees and 40% humidity. it's truly torture. I wish the swim (1.2 miles) had been on the end because I was just looking for a dunk tank by the end of the bike ride (the hardest part by far with 56 miles of seemingly vertical hills) followed by a half marathon. Most of that was just trying to get around the 3 loops but in the end, I finished. So what did I do for recovery? I went to California this last weekend, one week after the Ironman, and ran a half marathon. The motivation was the hardest. But I can't stand to waste 50 bucks so there you go. Turned in a new PR surprisingly with a 2:17.55 time. I think I could have knocked off another 20 minutes or so if it wasn't close to the Ironman. My legs didn't have much life for the last 5 miles. I think it's time for some genuine recovery now and make my new plans / challenges. Until the next entry....
  11. It begins one step at a time. Pick some goals and give yourself some time. I just finished an Ironman 70.3 two weeks ago and came back this last weekend and PR'd with my best half marathon time after being 427 pounds 18 months ago. Now I'm 180 on my 6'4" frame, which isn't bad for being in my upper 50s. Left foot, right foot Nutrition will be you real key to being successful. If you ran before, you'll remember the highs (and the agony too). Keep us up to date!

    First Sprint Triathlon

I know it's a little late but if you need any help, I can assist. I've done a number of sprint tris and now I'm training for my first full Ironman.

    Swimming!

It is the best! Love it. I'm doing 3-4 miles per week right now as part of my training and trying to convince my wife to let me do the Escape from Alcatraz swim.

    I'm Miserable!

If you are trying cold water, switch to tepid water. Cold water is really hard at the beginning. Warm items like broths and teas go down much better also. You have to keep hydrated above all else. Forget about protein for a few days and just focus on fluids. You can go without protein a little while but you can't go without fluids or you'll end up in the hospital.

    Die In Mexico?

I had my surgery in TJ and it was the best thing I ever did. My wife, when presented with the option of having it done here in Las Vegas or TJ, wanted to go back to TJ to have it done. I'm in the process of arranging to have it done for my youngest son in TJ. It was safe and we were never unescorted, even out socially. It was great.

    Help I Am So Frustrated

What you are doing here is confusing your system, changing things ups. When you hit a stall, this is a good thing. Increase your calories for a few days, then bring them down. This is actually a good routine to do all the time. You body can get used to doing certain things and eating a certain amount. Try the same thing with your exercise routine.

    Stomache Feels Empty At Night

Sleep! It cures all. I remember that feeling well. If it got bad, I just remember walking. It seems when I went for a walk, my empty feeling went away with the release of endorphins from exercise.

    The Sleeve & Martiage.

It really does change the normal give and take of marriage but only in that the topics that we compromose on. My wife said the same things (although she wanted to be sleeved also and eventually was). You will have more energy and want to do more so you'll have to find common areas to compromose together. I went head over heals into exercise and started to push my wife in that direction before i realized that her interests lie elsewhere. Our compromise - she lets me follow my passion and I scaled it back some so that we could spend more tine together, If anything, our marriage is better than before. There isn't a simple answer here but like marriage, it takes work to find the right solution. I'm sure you guys will make it successful!

    The Sleeve & Martiage.

Everyone starts the journey when they are ready. If your husband isn't ready, don't push it. As long as he is supportive, that's half the battle. One thing that moves he's decision process along ill be your change in food choices. Slowly start introducing healthier food choices and before long he'll notice feeling better. Positive reinforcement will move the process along.

    New Here

The Gastric Bypass is more evasive and it tends to be for people with a higher BMI than you have. I think I speak for most when I say I'm very happy with the sleeve. It is only a tool however and you have to get right in your head to be successful with it. 250 pounds sounds a little high for your height. That would give you a BMI of almost 34. At 6', I'd be looking more around 200, based on your build description. I'm 6'4" and now weight 185, starting from my high of 427, and lost that over the last 16 months. However, you need to measure yourself against only yourself and not what others do. As far as food, I can pretty much each whatever I want but I still watch that I don't fall into bad habits (sweets, etc). I do triathlons so I have to consume more calories than most and that means pretty much eating all te time leading into a race in order to get enough calories to sustain me for 8 hours of exercise. I can consume maybe 5-6 oz of Protein (fish or meat) and 1/2 cup of vergetables at a sitting.

    Triathlon Nsv!

[quote name=Lisa ' timestamp='1339632616' post='373537] I'm doing Breath of Life Ventura (which is organized by the family of the owner of the company I work for) on the 24th, Long Beach in Septembet and then SheROX San Diego in October. Well I think the SheROX is out for me :-). I don't think I'm "qualified". I absolutely got hooked on triathlons to the point where I train 5-6 days a week day, ride 100 miles per week, can open water swim for 2 miles, and run 10Ks 3 times per week. If only it weren't so d@*m expensive :-)!

Anyone Use A Hydration Pack Or Camelbak Post Op?

I have a couple of them that I use. One is a 50 oz for short runs or bike rides and a 90 oz I use for 100 mile rides. No problem with them. My doctor told me not to use the straw for the first 3 months but after that it was OK.
