roziecakes got a reaction from Harrier's Woman in new to site - thank you! (considering surgery + wanting to be pregnant sooner than later)
I do recommend getting the band. It was the best decision I ever made. Having a healthy pregnancy was part of the reason I wanted to lose weight too, and in my case it really worked. I was worried about age too (although I'm glad to say that I got pregnant at 30; I thought I would have to wait longer). Work closely with a doctor if you are concerned about infertility, because sometimes you will have to do other things than just lose weight to help with that. I ended up having to take some medications to help balance out my hormones although I'd lost a significant amount of weight before becoming pregnant. BEST of luck!

roziecakes got a reaction from ShellyBellyIowa in My band baby is here!!
So... I've been a busy new mom, so I haven't been on posting as much as I'd like, but I thought I'd update everyone on how things went. Hopefully this will be encouraging to other bandsters who want to have babies!
So after several years of infertility, I do believe that my weight loss from being banded helped me get pregnant, have a healthy pregnancy, and a healthy baby. I got pregnant in July of 2011 (one month after being banded!) and had a miscarriage. Then I got my a** in gear and worked with my doc to balance out my hormones; but she said that she thought I was healthy enough to go for it! I got pregnant with my daughter in January 2012.
    These were my fears:
    1) Nausea and vomiting would make me slip my band...
Well, I'm glad to report that although I did have a fair amount of nausea, I was just really careful about keeping it under control as much as I could, and when I did throw up, to treat myself as well as possible. No slippage!
    2) Weight Gain
Well, I have 2cc in my band, and I still have 2cc in my band, and I still have restriction. I still don't know if I'll ever need a fill or not. I only gained about 17 pounds total for the whole pregnancy, and I've lost that and then some since she's been born (Yay breastfeeding!)
    3) Other complications
I had NO gestational diabetes. I think though, that this is because I was EXTREMELY picky about my diet throughout my pregnancy. I realized that everything I was eating went directly to the baby, and with the lapband, I had to make the best choices possible nutritionally so that I got enough nutrition in to help my little one grow.
That being said, I did have a couple problems. I don't know if they were related to my weight or not... certainly not to the band, but here they are:
    Kidney stones:
Yes, I had them. They HURT so bad!!! I thought I was going into early labor; but nope. Kidney stones! Fortunately, they were small enough that I just passed them. OW!
    Pre-Eclampsia:
I developed high blood pressure at about 26 weeks. It just didn't go away... eventually it got worse and worse, and there was Protein in my urine. I got induced two days before my due date and my blood pressure was 190/110!! Fortunately, the cure for pre-eclampsia is to have a baby!
    Swelling:
I had a lot of swelling, but I think it was due to the pre-eclampsia more than anything. I got scolded by doctors for 'doing too much.' I was told to stop exercising at 7.5 months.
    C-Section:
This was most likely related to being induced. A lot of the time, when the body is in an unnatural state of labor, ie induction, it's just too much stress on you and the baby. I never dilated past 4cm, and the baby's heartrate was fluctuating dangerously. I tried to labor. I labored for over 30 hours, and nothing... so I got a C section. I'm actually not disappointed. The medical staff was awesome, and I really liked my doctor, and they took good care of me. My baby girl was born perfectly healthy 7lbs 8 oz with an apgar score of 9! She had no health issues whatsoever.
    Funny things:
Doctors kept thinking that my port was the baby's foot. It poked out a lot during pregnancy. I called it my 'turkey timer.'
So I hope that provides some perspective. I really hope that all of y'all who are hoping to have babies get to experience this joy. You all deserve it! If anyone has any questions, I'll be happy to answer them!
Here's my little sweetheart! She's now 3 months old!

roziecakes got a reaction from Harrier's Woman in Has Anyone With Pcos Gotten Pregnant After Lapband?
I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 17, and I was told by several doctors I'd never get pregnant, and that I was too heavy, etc etc. I got pregnant by surprise ONE MONTH after being banded, but that pregnancy ended in miscarriage. However, my experience prompted me to really take charge of my fertility. I worked with my doctor. I did take some natural supplements (Vitex and DIM) to help balance out my progesterone levels, and I took progesterone supplements after I got pregnant again in January! (yay!)
I'm almost 35 weeks pregnant with my baby daughter Maisie and I've had almost no problems. I did have a kidney stone, but it's not related to my weight or the PCOS, sometimes it just happens when you get pregnant.
So YES you can!!! Best of luck ladies!!
Edit* I also might mention that I also have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis which affected my fertility.

    Hi everyone!
I am back after a bit of a hiatus. After having a miscarriage in September of 2011, I took a lot of time to myself and took a break from most of my online forums. We got pregnant again in January of this year, and I'm just about 35 weeks now, and almost ready for my daughter Maisie to be born! I feel like I owe my pregnancy, and good health during pregnancy to my weight loss. I've gained 17 pounds this pregnancy, and I'm still at almost 9 months pregnant about 10 sizes smaller than I was pre-banding.
I've had no real complications with the band and being pregnant except that I had some problems with gas being trapped in my stomach that was pretty painful; but haven't experienced that since about 15 weeks. I have NO gestational diabetes and no high BP. I am so thrilled!
I am not updating my weight loss ticker for right now. I might do one for post-partum weight loss. I'm not sure when I'm getting a fill in my band after pregnancy. Since I've been on last, I had one 2cc fill, but they took it out when I got pregnant to allow for maximum nutrition. I have another fellow bandster in my local La Leche League group. Her little one is 11 weeks old and she hasn't gotten a fill yet.
Anyone who's been pregnant with the band... what was your experience? When did you get a fill after having your baby? I plan on breastfeeding, does that make a difference? Thanks in advance.
Looking forward to catching up with everyone!!!!

I'm 29, and this band was the best decision I ever made. I too struggled with my weight almost my entire life, and I wish I would have gotten this done sooner. However, I do have to say that emotionally, I was not ready to have this surgery a few years ago. That of course doesn't mean that you are in the same boat; but I think that because the band is not a passive miracle fix all tool, being emotionally ready and motivated is key.
You will need to be kind and loving to yourself; losing weight doesn't make us love ourselves more; loving ourselves more gives us the motivation to lose the weight; it's quite the opposite from what is commonly believed. That is the first step I would take, work on loving yourself no matter what size you are. Your size is NOT who you are. You are who you are, and despite the extra fluff, I'm sure you're a beautiful human being who is deserving of happiness, love and health!!
Best of luck on your journey! It's never too early to start being healthy!!!

I got banded in early June, and I have NEVER slimed, PB'd, or thrown up from the band. I've also never gotten anything stuck. I've only thrown up twice the whole time, but that's because I'm pregnant, not because the band had anything to do with it.
You may not feel restriction until you get a fill, that's what they're for, the first six weeks are all for healing, so you're doing just AWESOME my friend! Congrats!

    Very important post indeed!
I honestly won't listen to anyone complaining about not finding the time to incorporate workouts to their daily routine. This is purely nonsense. You found time to gorge and pig-out...you can find time to exercise.
I'm not a big fan of 2~3 hour workout sessions. I think it's too much and cannot be sustained for a long time. However, I do believe in doing various 15~20 minute exercise sessions throughout the day.
Being a paraplegic, I'm only able to work out my upper body... but I try to do as much as i can. Even pushing my manual wheelchair, I can change the style to isolate different muscle groups. For instance, I can lean forward and focus on my pectorals... or I can lean back and work on my front deltoids. I can also go uphill backwards in my wheelchair to work out my traps and some triceps.
I'll try to go around my neighborhood (about 1 mile) with my dog at least once a day. It's pretty tough because we have pretty steep hills.
My mother ails from rheumatoid arthritis and absolutely abhors working out... but I am so adamant that if she'd lose 30~40 pounds, the impact on her knees would be so much less. I guess it's much easier said than done.

Personally, I think it was brave of you to post something that some people might be bothered by, but I think that A LOT of others are feeling the same way. Even though I'm not feeling that way, I KNOW that there are probably a ton of people going through the same thing you are but they are too scared to post it.
I could imagine that being with someone basically your entire adult life is really a different experience from being able to play the field a bit first and then get married. I was married once before I met my partner, and I got married too young I think (19), and it only lasted a year. I'm not sure if Greg and I will get married legally... although the commitment is definitely there.
Anyhoo, again, I think it was brave of you to post. I am sure if you've made it through 18 years of marriage you have the strength in there to get through this yes. Have you told your husband that you are feeling this way?

    Hi there,
Congratulations on your weight loss and your self confidence! That is so wonderful to hear!!
For me personally, my weightloss thus far has brought my partner of almost 9 years and I closer together. He and I can do so many more things together, and we're really enjoying a better sex life, and just having more energy to have fun!
We're getting excited about riding bikes, and he exercises with me in the mornings. it's been fantastic! He's 6'2" and about 30 pounds overweight, so he's looking forward to getting healthy too.
I know that Greg would love me no matter what size I am, and he has always thought I was beautiful; but my health is the most important thing to him.
If I were you, I would look very carefully at the situation, and determine whether you can start over with your husband and re-ignite the spark that brought you two close in the first place. What can you do now with him that you couldn't do before? What's new? What can you explore together? Are your lifestyles so different now that all hope is lost?
It seems like something must have kept you together for 18 years and 4 children... examine what that is.
Weigh the pros and cons of divorce / staying together.
If you stay together, maybe there's a hobby or two you can take up that help you feel free and able to explore your new self confidence that doesn't involve cheating or getting divorced, or doing anything destructive to your relationship; maybe something a little daring like rock climbing or kayaking that help you find a sense of adventure!
Best of luck to you, whatever your decision turns out to be!
Edit; I also wanted to add this: Getting attention from new men is really just a momentary temporary thing; but having a husband that loves you and has made vows to love you his whole life and who has stayed with you for 18 years is priceless, and something that many people dream for years and would be quite grateful to have. I hope you consider that when you make your decision.
I personally know that I'm grateful every day to wake up to a familiar loving face of someone who I've been through my worst with and yet who can smile and say he loves me just the way I am!

All you ladies are such sweeties... taking this type of stupidity with such grace. It's a good lesson for me to learn from all of you
But back to the OP's statements.... what is the PURPOSE of your post? Who (or what) are you calling dumb?
Your post is so ambiguous and vague that I can't discern a reason why someone would waste their time to start such a thread.
Are you reaching out for support because you're not getting the results you wished? Or are you just venting because AUNT FLOW has come to visit you?? (Yes...I see that you're a male.... )
I haven't bothered to look at your profile... but others have said that you're 25? Well....so am I. At your age (and mine)... if you're so sick of dieting and exercising... why are you expecting ANY weight loss?
I'm sure your surgeon and his team told you that diet and exercise would still be needed to facilitate weight loss even after LAGB surgery right? Or did you buy a band on Fleabay and have one of your homies put it in for ya?
Also... do you have a problem with surgeons making a lot of money?? Do you have any idea the grueling education and residency they have to get through to be where they are?
To me... 4 years of med school with 4+ years of residency (not to mention 100Ks in debt) to become a surgeon SHOULD warrant a high paycheck.
I apologize for being harsh... but if you need support... ASK for it. There are great people here willing to walk with you every step of the way. But please don't insult everyone's intelligence by boldly (and idiotically) stating that LAGB is a scam and a joke.

It sounds to me like your goals were not health when you got your band, that your goal was just to lose weight and not have to do any work. Well, that's tough. Life is hard work, being healthy is hard work; even for most people who don't have to have weight loss surgery. Almost every person has to do some sort of 'diet and exercise' to be healthy.
I know that in the short amount of time I have had the lapband, it is NOT a gimmick, and it truly is a tool. I had lost a good amount of weight before deciding to get the band, but I was stuck in a horrible cycle. My back hurt to much to exercise, but to lose weight I needed to exercise, and for my back to stop hurting, I needed to lose weight. It was a vicious cycle. Getting the band has kickstarted everything, and has helped me help MYSELF. I love exercising! It feels great to be able to treat my body like a machine and a tool for living rather than a burden. People say that because it's true. Sure, it's not easy; but in my mind nothing really worth having is easy.
Life is a gift, don't take it for granted! I assume that you want to think back someday on your accomplishments and the things that you acheived rather than just letting everything be easy and feeling entitled to not having to work for things. Human beings are a great package; but some assembly is required
I am sorry that you are feeling frustrated and fed up and that your lapband is a gimmick. What makes you feel that way? What is happening to you that is making you feel like it is failing? Maybe some people on the board can help. It's hard to help you though with such an outwardly negative post.

Sorry to hear about your struggle. For me, I have found that with every pound I lose, I am falling in love with my husband all over again. He cheers with me for every pound that I lose. He has listened to my frustrations for years and I find that the more I lose, the more he has gotten excited about getting healthy himself. My husband is 6'2" and skinney. However, he has been eating healthy with me and has started taking his Vitamins and fish oil (that I stick in his face), and he has been working out on the total gym and treadmill. For me, I knew before my surgery that I have a problem getting attention from other men. I had that problem before I gained all of the weight and quite honestly, I have used the weight for years to keep people away from me. It has always made me angry when I was thinner how men would approach me and use me or lie to me, etc. I have always been a very trusting person so I have used the weight to keep from getting hurt. Now, I know my husband married me because he really loves me. He said that when we got married and he has proven it over and over. He loved me when I weighed 263 lbs and he loves me now that I have lost 50 lbs.
I hope you can find peace with where you are and your changing body. I can tell you that I was single for many years and as you continue to change, you will attract the attention of more and more men. Not all of them will have honest intentions with you. Some men just like the eye candy. Other's just like the thrill of the chase. I count my blessings every day that I am not single. I was there for years and have met many men that were at the bottom of the barrel. I'm a firm believer that the grass is not greener on the other, it's greener where it is watered. Congrats on your 18 years of marriage. That is almost unheard of today and is something to be admired. I hope you remember that you didn't throw your old body away, you changed it.............I hope you won't throw your marriage away, but will find away just to change it and make it better.
