    Opinion about my Nutritionist

Please try not to judge her. I remained obese for years as I could not afford the surgery. It could be her insurance does not cover weight loss surgery and she cannot afford it on her own. Or she may be in the middle of trying to qualify for surgery. She may have underlying health issues that she is unable to lose weight. I watched what I ate for years when I diagnosed as a diabetic but I was still not able to lose weight. After other health issues and medication caused me to gain weight and I was never able to shed the weight after that. If you are really concern, ask her about it. But like Blackberry said, if she is giving good advice don't dismiss her because of her size. She may be more sympathetic then the skinny nutritionist that don't understand how hard this is for us. Good Luck.

    Failure...

I personally think the failure rate is based on the person. As many have said and will say, this is a tool. Just like taking medication for a medical condition, you have to accept what you are doing and only you can make is succcesful. Some people have unrealistic goals or put too much pressure on themselves. My doctor did not set up a set goal weight. I had in my mind what I wanted to weigh which was around 125 which means I would have need to lose over 100 lbs. But as I started to lose weight, I have revised my goal multiple times. I think I am probably at my final weight as I am hovering around 155. When I look in the mirror I can see my collar bones so if I lose much more I may start looking sickly. The only place I am still holding on to excess body fat is through my middle. Yesterday I bought a size 10 pair of shorts. That I did not met my goal, am I failure. NO WAY....I am happy of where I am at. I am no longer diabetic on medication or taking cholestral medication. My husband and I going hiking and I can walk 3-4 miles a day without being winded or look like I may have a attack. Would I love to lose a 10 more pounds-sure but I am not going to obsess over it.. Make small goals and look at each one as a victory and you will be successful!
  3. Everybody's pain is different. I think some of the swallowing is due to the breathing tube during surgery. I found the warmer the liquid the better tolerated it was for me. Also since it was winter time, I prefered things being warm as I was so cold after surgery as the weight dropped and I lost all my extra body fat that kept me warm previously. The key is going slowly and I also measured at the beginning to make sure I did not overeat.

    GOING INSANE, PLEASE HELP!!!!

I didn't even had this forum when I first started. My company funds their own medical plan and they had a guideline of 12 months of supervised diet with the PCP. I was also looking at the band because at that time, the sleeve was not covered. I didn't even met with the surgeon until I was at my 7 months supervised diet when I found out they changed and it was oly 6 months. Which was good as by that time, they started covering the sleeve and my doctor recommended that instead of the band.. I am so every grateful that he did. I just focused on how I was going to be after surgery. I tried not to get too hopefully (I always had a fear they would deny me). Start walking now and it will be second nature to you for after the surgery and it will help time go by. Good Luck!
  5. Congrats in getting sleeved. I ddin't post right away but I was still learning how to use a smart phone and I didn't take my laptop with me. My doctor wanted us up and walking within 4 hours getting to our our. I walked so much that evening my Iv battery drained and I was then tethered to the plug until the next morning. As for the swallowing since we had a breathing tube sometimes our throat is swollen when they remove it for a few days afterwords. Trying varying the temperature of the liquids your are drinking. I fell in love in drinking very warm chicken broth...it was like coffee to me. I never had the pain iv but I loved the Tordal they gave me for pain meds. I never took anything more than that while I was in. Welcome to the losing side of being sleeved.

20 Mi Hiking & NO LOSS!

For the amount of exercising you are doing you are probably not eating enough calories and carbs thus slowing down the weight loss. If you are doing major hiking you are probably burning more calories than you are taking in. Also when you are excercising if you don't eat enough carbs (tit is needed to help burn calories or something of the sort. I remember reading about this and my nut also taking about it when I was early out. Just enjoy what you are able to do now as to what you could before surgery. I was not able to even hike 2 miles before surgery. Hang in there, it will come off.

    Desperate for answers!

I had my surgery at St Vincent's East with Dr Schmitt. I was very pleased with the level of care I received over the level of care my husband had for other procedures at brookwood.

    Looks?

My husband would be better to answer this from a male perspective but I will answer from what I see. I started at 232 and I am now hovering around 155 after 8 mos. I do have a belly that has lapped over and will probably never lose that. Women who bear child usually have weaker stomach muscles. My husband was 272 and his goal was 200. He has reached and exceed his goal without really trying after 4 months. H e is currently 186.Men seem to lose a lot quicker. He has a small pooch of a stomach but otherwise he is looking good. We are thinking that if he loses much more weight he will start looking gaunt and sickly. I would love to lose more but it appears that my body has decided this is the weight I should be. Most of my weight still hanging around is in my belly. I am would love to lose another 10 pounds but I am okay if I don't. My shoulder bones are showing and if I lose more in that area, I may not look as healthy. I am justing going on the ride for what my body wants at this point. I like what I see in the mirror and that is all that matters is my opinion and of course my husband! Others may think they are succesful and if their goal was to be off medication and such and they reached it, that is great! Good Luck in your journey.

    Disappointed!

Do not be disappointed!!!!..looking at your post you have lost 44 lbs in 2 months....That is a lot of weight! Where can you do that any diet plan? There will be times that you weight loss will slow to give time for your body to catch up. My nut always said 1-3 pounds a week in the beginning was a good. You are doing AWESOME!

    Eye problems

I had some issues also after surgery but at my 6 month check up I was low on Vitamin A which is essentail for the eyes. I am now on a supplement and will have it rechecked at my one yr followup. Make sure that you are taking all of your vitamins.

    Stressing over....an EGG!

I use egg beaters. I usually scramble it, 1/4 cup with 1 tablespoon of bacon bits and 1/4 cup of cheese. This gives me protein around 15 grams.

    I need a secretary!

go to cozi.com. This is a shared calendar, shopping list, etc.....My husband and I share it, so we both get set up reminders for appts and such. You can set a reminder for yourself or go to all family members. Every Sunday it sends me a list of all the appointments for the week. It has a grocery list that you can add to it while the other person is at the store. I even have my husband trained to put on his doctor appts as soon as they are made. I love it.
  13. I work from 8 am to 7 pm Monday thru Thursday. I take an hour lunch and I walk 1-mile. After I get off from work, I then go from anywhere from 2-3.5 mile walk. On the weekends we go to the thrift stores to look for clothes to fit our new bodies. Once the weather cools down, my husband and I will start hiking again. My time eating hasnt change much, just the volumes, I do walk more then I did before.
  14. I was told by my office to take 2 of the Multivitamins a day....my schedule is Vitamin at breakfast, calcium at break, Vitamin A (my only deficiency at my 6 month check-up), 2nd calcium at afternoon break and 2nd Multivitamin at supper. The week days go better for me as I have set schedule breaks and lunches due to phone coverage. I was taking the baiatric advantage but has recently switch to the Centrum Silver for Women.

What is your favorite recipe website?

This isn't a blog but I got so tired of trying to plan menus. I found this website for $15 for 3 months, once a week they will send you 5 recipes including grocery list. They have many options but I use the low carb for 2 people. This is more for those that are on real foods and/or closer to goal. I can usually get 2 or more meals from one recipe. So far we (my husband is also a sleever) have liked everything and we are trying things we normally wouldn't have ate prior to surgery. I don't fix all the sides they are suggesting but this is helping to get veggies and fruits in my diet as I had focused too much on just Protein and not eating enough vegetables or fruit to balance. http://www.e-mealz.com/
  16. I also had the white build up on my tongue due to the protein shakes I was drinking. I got a tongue scraper which helped a lot. As for the liquids, you are doing fine. It is very hard this early out to stretch out the stomach. Keep up on the fluids as it is so important and even more so with the hot weather not to get dehyrdrated.
  17. Both my husband and I use Viactiv. We pick up the large bag at Sam's club for about $12. The last bag was caramel and they remind us of the caramels we use to eat when we were young. The chocolate is like eating a tootsie roll. We have 2 a day. I use to get the Bariatic Advantage but when we both had surgery we started looking at alternatives and these are comparable.
  18. All clothing are so different. When I weighed what I weigh so so many years ago, the sizes were much bigger then what I am wearing now. Instead of looking at the clothing sizes, did you take your measurements before you started. When I wasn't much movement with the scale or with the clothes, the measurements were getting smaller. Your weight loss is AWESOME so far. As it keeps getting repeated, we didn't get this way overnight, it will take time. Keep up the good work.

    Scared of PE

My doctor standard of care is 14 days of daily lovenox injections after surgery. I hated to give myself those shots but I did it. It also important to keep walking as that is very helpful. We were required to start walking within 4 hours getting to our rooms and they wanted us to walk every 4 hours while in the hospital. Once I got going, I walked every hour up and down the hallway. Definately talk to the doctor and see what they suggest. Good Luck.
  20. I started my pre-op liquid diet the day before Thanksgiving last year. My husband got a Boston market frozen turkey dinner. He let me go out shopping Thanksgiving day so he could eat while I was gone so I would not have to smell it. Christmas day was my first day to reintroduce meat. I measured everything at the beginning so I would not overeat and take your time eating. It will get easier. You can do it!

    6 month/24.5 week update

Sounds like you are doing great!. As for testing daily-that is so much better than having to drink that glucose syrup crap. My family history of diabetes always required me to do the test multiple times during my pregnancy but I never got the gestational diabetes....It reared its ugly head later in life. Depending on your testing device, use the side of the fingers and using a different one each time instead of the pads, You will not have to have the setting very deep and it would be less painful. Wishing you the best!!

    Where are you From?

It was the best thing I ever did. I was one those that did not have any type of complicatoins. I have only twice ate to quickly and had the case of the foamies but have yet to throw up.I walk 2-4 miles a day. My husband had his in March in Atlanta and has already reached his goal. I am close to where I want to be by physical appearance but would still like to lose another 10-15 lbs if we are going by the scale. We will have to try to met up sometime.

    slim fast

I used the sugar free slimfast and added 1/3 cup of dry milk for added protein. I could only find chocolate and french vanilla. I added a tablespoon of sugar free Torina flavor syrups to change of the flavors. I drank these after surgery until I was able to get all of my protein from food. I could not tolerate the other protein drinks after surgery. My nut said I could had up to 60-90 carbs per day....Everyone's has different opinions on this. Again I just used these until I was on normal food and getting all of my protein from that. Good Luck.

    Goodbye LB

Now if I could only figure out how to get off of all the PLUS SIZE mailing lists, I would be a happy woman! You should be able to go to their website and ask to be removed from their mailing ist. Or call their toll free number and request it. I did that with a few that I used to get. I love that I can shop normal stores. I am hitting basically a thrift store right now when I need something as I don't wont to spend a lot of money yet on clothes that may not lost long in fitting. Plus some of my thrift stores discounts the color tag of 30% or 50%. Since I work from home I don't have to have alot of dress clothes at this time.

Friends told me to slow down :(

As other posted, do what you feel that you can do. It is awesome just being able to walk so much farther then what you could before surgery. Within a week after my surgery I was walking a mile or more a day. it was broken up in 2-3 trips. Walking is very important so just do what you can and keep hydrated while walking. Good Luck!
