B-52 got a reaction from Annemr in My Pre Op Diet Was All I Needed
    Good for you...congratulations!
I am 63 years old, and have experienced what you are experiencing dozens of times...only to gain it all back, and then some.
It was frustrating to say the least. I simply do not have the self discipline or will power to make it stick.
Lets face it...that's why I was obese in the first place....
So, I had Weight Loss surgery...to do what I was incapable off doing myself...and this is permanent!
I have no fear of ever gaining it back, nor do I have to work hard at maintaining it. I don't have to count calories nor follow any specific diets. No more "White Knuckling" it.
I have many friends who eat right, go to the gym, and live healthy, fit, and skinny lives, and they did not have WLS....so it can be done.
But for me, this is exactly what I needed!! And this is what worked for me.
Just like my skinny friends, I eat right, go to the gym,,and I am healthy, fit, and skinny....BUT in the background, the Lap band is there quietly doing it's job for me.
    Again..,congratulations....
BTW, I had to do a medically Supervised 6 month pre-op diet....I did very well for about 4 months, then started to slide back, then failed...
Just Like every diet I have been on, and also proving to my Insurance, for the record, Diets do not work for me.

B-52 got a reaction from juncaj4 in Maintenance Phase
For me there is no such thing as a Maintenance Phase to this.
Since surgery, I have learned how to eat all over again, good foods, small portions, etc etc.
It is NOT a diet as was before surgery. I've been on numerous, countless diets and know all about the different phases including Maintence....THIS is something different.
Because of that, my weight slowly and consistently came off....untill my body decided it has reached what it considers normal.
Not my goal as if I can turn this on and off....I can't...it's surgery.
And because of a New Normal lifestyle, my body weight, etc, has adjusted to that new normal.....
And I will continue living this new way for the rest of my life.
I eat and exercise a certain way now, and my body adapted to that way and there it will stay...so No Maintenance....
I live and eat the same way people who have never been fat live and eat....

B-52 got a reaction from Julie norton in Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot
The day I learned to "Let it Go" was the biggest breakthrough in my banded life.....I can now say I live a normal life, never count calories or worry too much about portion sizes...
I just eat good healthy foods, and stay active....just like any other "Normal" person does.....TOTAL LIBERATION!!!!
Difference is, in the background....I still have the band, always there dictating certain life principles.....but because of the band, I have also learned those new principles.....

B-52 got a reaction from Delta_35 in VET'S FORUM. What the %^&* is going on around here?
Fat people are masters at "Self Denial" and "rationalization"
I can say this from personal experience....I could suppress the truth and reality so far down in my mind it didn't exist.
The fact I am only 5'8" and had to buy my clothes from a "Big and Tall" clothing store. The only pants I could buy had to have the elastic waistband.
I wouldn't look in the mirror, and it got to the point I would not step on the scale...ever!
    The examples go on...
I currently have friends today, that if I suggest they join the gym I better duck!
As far as Rationalization, I have been on more diets anyone can imagine, including medical supervised diets...I failed miserably at everyone...why? I would rationalize...
I can have this little piece of cake, a little won't hurt, right?
I know I'm on a strict diet, but if I have this one good meal, I can fast tommarow...but then tomorrow I'm rationalizing something else, again. And before you know it, the whole thing goes down the tubes and I'm back to my old self.
I smoked 2 pack of cigarettes a day for over 35 years...same thing....can't tell you how many times I quit. I would buy a pack, smoke one cigarette and throw the pack out the car widow...crazy, right? Pretty soon I would realize how stupid (and expensive) that was and would just start smoking full force again.
I believe what you are seeing on this forum, are new people who even though they have had surgery, they still have that old mentality that they can do things and rationalize it away, and then be in denial about it.
They post these questions hoping someone will tell them it's fine, everything is going to be Ok.
But when confronted with the truth....well, I remember when someone would call me out...
It can be just as bad as confronting a high functioning alcoholic...can get nasty
The fact is, to loose weight or change oneself in any way, you have to be confronted with the truth.
Weight loss surgery is not a game...it's not a gimmick, a fad diet....it is major surgery designed to change and alter your life.
You're right, I don't know how some get past the psych eval... but they need to be confronted

Ok, for those who do not know me, a little background.
Was banded Jan 2011....met my goal weight within 12 months. Have been 100% successful and as happy as can be ever since, the band did everything I had expected to. I will also add I never had a single problem. If you call getting stuck, regurgitating a problem, well good luck with that.......I call that a learning curve. Stop doing what caused those issues.
Toughest Part?? Letting the band make the rules, and me changing, adapting to get along with what the bands demands. That meant giving up a lot of things I used to enjoy.
Goal Weight? I let my body decide, reach an equilibrium-balance, settled where it wants to be.
Today...went back to my surgeon (and office staff) who I have not seen in a few years......Reason? To discuss having the band removed. Why? Not that there are problems, not that it does not work, but because it did work...for years. I figure by now I have learned new habits....eating small portions, abstaining form certain foods such as meat, flour based products, etc....learning Protein and Water is a daily given. I feel I can survive with out the band. So they removed ALL the Fluid from my band, 8cc's. Will go back in December and start planning the pre-surgery clearances and decide on a surgery date. probably Jan-Feb.
It's been a very rewarding experience. Best decision I ever made. Literally saved my life.
Now for the fun part.....My surgeon and the weight loss center, stopped doing bands altogether.
I asked why, and was told, with a few exceptions such as myself, there is a high failure rate. Now I know this has been a topic here, and I did not have an opinion, until today. I trust these people whole heartily. I asked if the band was no good? Answer was the band is just fine...it's the patients who get the band who are the problem. The staff just could not "Babysit" anymore.
Sorry, many did not want to hear that...but take it from me who is successful..there is nothing wrong with the band.
I do not come around here that much....today I cruised all the topics, and they are all the same as they ever were.....Sorry, but veterans can answer the same question over and over just so many times. And I can read between the lines from the questions being asked, that many just don't get it...they are asking old traditional questions other than the new way of thinking questions.

Haven't been here in a while...today out of the blue I get an e-mail from a member asking me questions (?)
How (or why) they found me I don't have a clue.
For you newbies, I was banded Jan 2011. Met my goal weight (100lbs down) in one year. Band did everything I had hoped it would. Suppressed appetite, cravings, limited portion sizes. blah blah blah. Because of this I was forced to develop a new lifestyle, new foods, new eating methods, throw in some exercise and presto...a new me. Got my life back. Now, every day is just like any other day...I don't worry all that much about what I eat or how much (thanks to the band) it all comes natural now. I'm not worried, or have been since a few months after surgery about gaining any weight back...how can I? Over eating is impossible....and certain foods are just as impossible....It all comes very natural and effortless.
I know, I probably already pushed a few buttons but I am only speaking for myself and my experiences.
Prior to surgery I was a insulin diabetic, plus I had all the other ailments you read on this forum associated with obesity...could not get anything under control no matter how Dr. s regulated all the drugs they were prescribing. I also had coronary artery disease resulting in heart surgery. While they were in there they noticed I had had a Heart Attack, although I never knew it which is common for diabetics ( and women) but I am fortunate to be here. All that is behind me, and at age 65 my Dr.'s still are amazed...My cardiologist said I am getting younger, not older.
I am going to make an appointment with my surgeon.....I am contemplating having the band removed...not because I am having issues..I have never had problems with the band. It's just after years of forming new habits, perhaps I can continue without the aid of something foreign in my body. Besides, one of the selling points was that it is reversible. At the least I will ask him to take out all the Fluid and see how that goes for a while.
Ok, so where have all the veterans gone? Are they still out there? Successful? The answer is yes..we are out here. No Offense, but there is not much happening here for us. When I logged in today, which hasn't been in a while, I looked down the list of trending topics and they are all the same as they were 6 years ago. The same hot topics also. And after a while, after you're thru the early stages, you start to realize things. I used to get roasted for saying some of the things I did from someone who just went thru the surgery whereas I after years, had a different take on things. The majority of people here are new to this, and sorry, just don't have that much in common with veterans.
Ok, that should make up for years of not posting. But to all my fellow banders out there, remember this...THIS THING DOES WORK !! Don't sweat the small stuff...give it chance, it is adjustable and takes a little time to get it just right. After that it is all easy-peasy.
    See ya!

B-52 got a reaction from Ldyvenus in Just Passing Thru...been awhile
    See ya!

B-52 got a reaction from Val Rennee in Hibachi - not sure what to eat
Thing about a Hibachi is you don't have to eat much...they put a little of each thing in front of you, one at a time, and you only have to nibble at it...
Eat what you normally eat....don't know if you're counting calories or not...
Me...I would eat a little of everything...(except red meat and rice, maybe noodles)...that is how I live my life now...moderation, and a lot less than what I used to...

What does a Tight Band fell like???? Being in the "Green Zone"?
I'm sitting here at my laptop, having my Breakfast - a Protein shake with some mixed berries, mixed in a blender.
I have to take small slow sips and swallows, and with each swallow I can feel it pass through my band, and if I keep my mouth open you can hear it "Gurgle" as it slowly passes.
I'll probably have 2 cups of coffee before heading out to work, but other than Water that I have with me all day, that's it!
I'm satisfied! No interest in anything additional to eat.
I cannot even get interested in what I may (or may not) eat for lunch, let alone dinner! NO INTEREST!
I used to be obsessed with food!!!
That's being at that "Sweet Spot"
It's not a feeling of being "Full", as if you've overeaten, it is more of a "Lack of Interest" in eating. I believe it is a signal the band sends to the brain, same as if you were full, but you're not full, telling you "You Don't Have To Eat".........make sense???

    Be Happy!
Know your band is working which will only lead to success....and know this is all part of the learning curve and you just learned a big important lesson....
I would be more concerned, if after all this time, I never got stuck....as though there is no band at all and it was all a lie!

B-52 got a reaction from sweetsuzzie1 in Lap Band....First Episode!
I was fat - Obese becausaeI ate all the wrong foods, and ate the wrong way.
Diets never helped, tried and failed 100 times.
Lap Band surgery changed all that. It FORCED me to change what I eat, and how I eat.
I once ate like a glutton, now I eat like a bird.
Not going to guess what your episode was, but be ready. The lap band will change your life.
Why else did we have this surgery if we do not want it to do something???
I am 6 years out. What and how I eat has become routine. But in the beginning while I was learning my lessons (the hard way) I sometimes got stuck a few times a day until I finally broke!
Even today, every now and then without thinking I will take too large a bite - swallow, or gulp a drink and immediately I will be strongly reminded I did have surgery once.
People who get stuck, have food - slime come back up immediately think there is something wrong....(Maybe there is but not with the band)
I say seize the moment, think about what you did to cause the episode, and learn from it....eventually you will break all those habits you never knew you had and change your life for good.
