    Why sugar free

This brings up another question on whether everyone does do low carb. My doctor has never said I need to do low carb and the food information they gave me never addressed staying away from the high carb things. I know we need to focus on eating Protein first, then fruit/veggies then whole grains but do some doctors suggest it has to be low carb?
  2. Have you monitored the quantity you are ingesting at one time? Have you tried smaller portions more frequently? Do you vomit with everything i.e. water, shakes, other drinks? Did they give you any anti-nausea or acid reducer? Hang in there. There has to be an answer on why this is happening and just converting you to bypass doesn't seem like it solves whatever the issue is.

Good info! Muscle loss and weight loss

I drink the Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60 shakes from GNC (tastes great!) and they have both creatine and glutamine and are whey based.

Looking for buddy in Kansas City!

I would call and remind them. That seems excessive.

Looking for buddy in Kansas City!

When they called to say I was approved they gave me my surgery date right then. They haven't scheduled you yet?
  8. I was a potato chip addict. Basically I craved greasy, salty and crunchy food. Now I am much more sensitive to salt and something salty turns my stomach. Chips don't even sound good and that is incredible to me when I used to be able to polish them off a full bag at a time. I used to rarely eat yogurt and now I crave it. I like my new taste buds!

Looking for buddy in Kansas City!

I was sleeved on July 18th by Dr Malley (he actually does the surgery). Other than a problem with nausea right after surgery which got out of control because the nurse at Menorah wasn't giving me anti-nausea meds as often as she was supposed to, I have had a great experience. Since surgery have lost 12 lbs with 28 lbs lost overall. Nice to see other KC people on the board.

    Eating solids

I moved to purees on day 5 and soft solids on day 8. I am not sure why the instructions vary but would say if you are getting hungry talk to your doctor about a puree meal a day.

    Eating solids

I started solids on the direction of my doctor. I didn't have a problem until last night. My husband and I went to a concert and ate dinner out before the concert. I ordered ahi tuna with some lobster mac and cheese and heirloom tomatoes. When the tomatoes came they had slices of cucumber with peel included. I was eating and talking to my husband and without even thinking grabbed a cucumber and popped it into my mouth. About 5 minutes later it would not budge. Not going up and not going down. The sliming started and I ended up getting sick. I was so mad at myself for foregoing a wonderful piece of fish to eat a lousy cucumber and winding up losing my dinner all together. I realized I need to be more conscious of my eating. I am going to have to work on that for sure. Also not drinking with meals is very difficult for me. How is everyone doing with that?

    yay...new date yay

What an awesome birthday gift, a healthier you! Congrats!
  14. I had my one week post-op appointment today. I got rid of the drain. It was strange because I have had this sore spot on my left side that has been bothering me at night. Today when the doctor removed my drain (from the right side mind you) I felt it immediately in my sore spot on my left side. I don't know if the drain actually reached over that far or if my nerve endings are misfiring but it sure felt good to get rid of it. My doctor is pretty liberal with food and such. He let me move into soft foods today which was awesome. I made my husband take me to McCormick and Schmicks for some Sockeye Salmon (to die for!). I couldn't eat much but those few bites were delicious. He told me I could move to whatever I want next week but to still stay clear of doughy or dense bread and dense meats. I am glad he isn't one that makes you wait weeks before eating. On the way home I realized how happy I am. Truly happy. I have not felt that about myself in a long time. My weight has always been the ball and chain that constrained me. Not any more!
  15. That is absolutely fantastic! PS - I got married in 1990 also and my dress looks very very similar to yours. They matched our "big hair". Lol.

    The transformation has begun

Nancy I have had a similar experience. What is really interesting to me is that my stomach is usually not what shows weightloss first. I usually (according to my husband) show it in my rearview first. Yesterday he told me he could see it in my shoulder area and I have noticed my t-shirts hang differently now. I will take weightloss however I can get it but to see it in an area that is usually hard for me to lose is great. Thanks for starting the thread!

    Tomorrow is the day!

One week ago I was in your shoes waiting anxiously for the surgery the next day. Today I feel great and I am very happy to be on this side of the fence. Good luck with your surgery. You won't regret it a week from now!

NOT STAYING ON 6 MONTH DIET

I went through the same thing during my 6 mo diet but keep in mind if all it took was a doctor "supervising" our diet no one would need or want VSG. It just isn't the answer for us. If your doctor doesn't understand that then you might think about finding one who is more supportive of the surgery and less supportive of traditional, non-effective weightloss methods. I look as the whole 6 month diet as it being a chance for you to get your mind right about surgery and to know that you are ready mentally and emotionally. Don't fret about it just know it is a step toward your end goal. As soon as I quit worrying about it so much I actually ended the 6 mo diet with a 8 lb loss. Good luck and keep your eye on the prize!
  19. I had my surgery on Monday morning fully expecting it to be similar to previous surgeries if not a bit easier than some of my more intense surgeries. Things started off well until late Monday when I started having severe nausea. Due to a mis-understanding on the nurses part I wasn't getting enough anti-nausea. My doctor wanted them to give me zofan every six hours and alternate with phenergan every six hours so I would get meds every 3 hours to get on top of the nausea. They were just giving them every 6 hours and were not increasing the anti-acid either so I wound up with a large amount of acid which made me sick several times. Vomiting right after surgery is not fun let me tell you. The swallow test Tuesday morning showed very little making it through my pouch because it was so swollen but there were no leaks thankfully. Doctor said lets keep up with the anti-nausea drugs and start liquids. Again the nurse misunderstood (by this time my doctor is really not happy) and all she offered me was a cup of Water. Wednesday morning the doctor came and said we need to see how you do on other liquids so Wednesday I started getting the clear liquid diet. I was determined to get out of the hospital so I was diligent on getting my fluids in. By Wednesday evening I asked to go home and the doctor agreed so I am home today and feeling 100% better. There are two things I would suggest for anyone getting their sleeve. One, make sure you know what your doctor's plan to treat nausea is up front. Had I known I would not have taken the wrong answers from the nurse and I could have pushed a bit harder. Two, if something doesn't seem right (like having a stomach full of acid and a nurse is telling you nothing can be done about it) push to talk to the doctor. If I had it would have saved me a lot of pain and suffering. I didn't go into all the gory details but I had other things that complicated things for this surgery. Would I do it all over again? Yes I would. I know this will all be worth it. Keeping my eye on the prize!

    Home from the hospital

I had not had nausea before so while I knew it might be a complication I wasn't expecting it. My doctor had the right plan for treating it but it got flubbed up by the nurse. I just think if I had known more about what my treatment should be I would have realized I wasn't being treated appropriately.
  21. I am really excited about my surgery tomorrow. My 2 week pre-op diet allowed me to eat one meal in the evening and last night for my last meal I had a bowl of Soup and salad from Olive Garden. It tasted so good. A few months ago if someone told me my last meal was going to be soup and salad I would have laughed but I enjoyed every bite. Today is all liquids and I am a little bit concerned on my how my blood sugar will hold up without Protein supplements so I am staying home and laying low today. I ordered some unflavorded unjury but haven't gotten it yet and I plan in it being a staple of my diet post op since I can add a little powder to just about anything to beef up my protein intake. I am really ready both mentally and emotionally for the surgery. When I make my mind up about something I don't look back. I was diagnosed with very aggressive breast cancer at age 27 and being a survivor have had to make some really tough choices in my life and learned the hard way you can't second guess yourself. For those motorcycle enthusiasts the old saying "when in doubt, accelerate out" works in life too. Power though the tough times and you may just find a much stronger person inside than you thought you were. ) To those of you just starting out and are thinking with all the hoops and hoopla you have to go through that you aren't sure you can make it. You can make it. Believe it or not that 3 or 6 month diet gives you time to get "your head right" so when you have the surgery you are ready. I am thankful I had that time and all of the conversations I had with my PCP about this. She was very supportive and I am grateful for that. One more sleep and I get to join the others on the "Losers Bench". Can't wait!

    very sick!

Did your doctor prescribe an acid reducer?
  23. I read on someone's post that their doctor said it is common for weight loss to slow or stop during puree and mushy stage until you start eating more solid protein. Hang in there!
  24. MLD - my surgery is in Kansas City at Menorah Medical Center. How about you?

    July 19th surgery date

I may be delusional but my surgery is next Monday and I took off through Wednesday. I work at home full time so figured I would see how I feel Thursday morning. I can work a few hours and rest as needed. I have had several surgeries before but this is the first laproscopic one. I bounce back really well and avoid pain meds in general which tend to make me feel worse than just getting through some pain with advil. From what I have read everyone seems to heal at their own pace so taking it day by day is the key. Good luck on your surgery!
