The reason I go by weight is that it's easier to measure than volume. (Like you can't squish a pizza slice into a measuring cup.) The density of all foods is pretty close to the density of water. Within 10%, I would guess. And if I chew thoroughly like I'm supposed to, that four ounces of pizza will be about half a cup.

    Phase/Week 3

I'd check with your clinic. It wouldn't have been allowed that early on my clinic's plan, but they're all different..

    I feel like I’m failing

On one of my many self-devised diets, years before VSG surgery, I fasted for 8 days straight. Only had water and non-caloric beverages. To my amazement, I lost ZERO pounds!! When my weight loss had slowed down (post-VSG) my nutritionist usually increases my daily calories. We should be eating 4-5 times a day. I’m rambling, I know, but I think we are often instructed to eat too few calories, and I believe, especially in the year post- op, we definitely should not be on OMAD or IF. Just sayin….

I went to Italy 4 months post op too, twins! I had a lot of coffee, salads, nuts, cheese, yogurt, fruit with some pizza, gelato and pastries thrown in (surgeon said I could although I assumed I couldn’t) because… it was Italy. Pharmacies did have ready made and powder protein for shakes. I shopped at local markets a few times and made a meal of my own at a cooking class. I was limited by capacity so that was nice. I did try to be balanced but still have fun. Surprisingly food was not the fun I ultimately had. Good Luck and have fun ❤️

Personally I prefer weighing and use that for the majority of items, but there are some thing that don't make sense to weigh and will be less affected by how tightly I pack the cup, like when I make soup. When I make something like that, I measure yield (in cups), figure out the stats for per cup or whatever, and then use that for recording amounts. Ounces by volume can be very different than by weight because food doesn't weigh the same, even if it seems like it would. I'm a beekeeper, and we have to sell honey by weight, because 8 fluid oz (by volume) of honey weighs more than 8 oz by weight since it is so dense. It can also vary from honey to honey depending on moisture content, etc, so weight is more variable.

I literally just posted about my clinic's nutritionist who wants everything measured. It's SO inaccurate... do you pack the rotisserie chicken into the container or not? That could double the weight! Everything has to be in grams for me. My scale isn't sensitive enough for the tiny fractions of an ounce, so everything is in grams. 80 grams of turkey for me for lunch; a wedge of La Vache Qui Rit is 30 g of cheese. Etc. etc.

Perfect timing! I’m not in Italy, but I am on a cruise ship! If meals onboard are an option, My husband and I have just been sharing everything and I’m able to eat anything/everything without issue (except maybe too much once or twice). Lots of protein options in the morning and at lunch. I have found dinner a bit more challenging because of the number of courses. Our solution has been to order room service so there’s no pressure, I can take my time, and not feel like the odd man out at a table.

From my experiences in Italy, it's not a problem to share if you explain. (Mi hanno operato allo stomaco e non posso mangiare molto... andrebbe bene se io con mio marito condividessimo il piatto principale, se ognuno de noi ordinasse un antipasto?) However, you might have some trouble with protein in the morning. It depends where you are staying. If you are in a rented apartment where you must shop for your own food, of course, no problem, you can just buy the proteins you want and cook in the apartment. If you are in a tourist hotel, no problem, Germans travel to Italy in huge flocks and they tend to eat Brötchen (rolls), cold cuts, and cheese, you can just skip the rolls. The problem will be if you are in a little pensione or a hotel that caters to Italians, breakfast is likely to be cappuccino (never ordered after about 10 a.m.) with either bread and jam, or with a cornetto (like a sugary croissant, but either filled [ripieno] with sweet almond paste, cinnamon paste, fruit paste, or Nutella, or not filled [vuoto]). If this is where you are staying you might ask if they have any yoghurt for breakfast. Italians don't eat eggs, bacon, sausage, or ham for breakfast... US breakfasts confuse them.

Now, I have always had wider calves than average, but when I weighed almost 400, they were super, super wide. I managed to find a pair of extra wide calf boots back then that fit but I could barely zip them up. I tried them on the other day and they're HUGE on me. I'm pretty sure I could fit BOTH calves in them now! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

I am right there with you. I just passed my 4 months and I am so ashamed of myself for not trying harder...I've literally only lost 40 pounds! I'm at 262 this morning and I just don't know what to do anymore. I just started working this desk job and before I was a stay at home mom so I'm even more mad at myself that I didn't take advantage of the time I had off to exercise bc now I'm literally stuck in a chair for 8.5 hours a day and when I get off I have a crazy kid schedule and it's all about them and not me so no time to do anything. But I know that I gotta find the time somehow and do me! It's just so hard sometimes you just wanna give up and eat every thing in the house! [emoji20] I really thought I would lose like 100 pounds at least but it's just not happening and feel like I've missed a huge opportunity to get it off! Well anyways, I'm glad you got yourself mad and committed yourself! You will do great with the right mindset! I gotta try to get there myself lol Sent from my SM-G981U using BariatricPal mobile app
