    It was NOT gas pain.

I got the sleeve December 28th. Successful pre-op week long liquid diet and day before clear liquids. 10.5 lb loss Successful surgery, anesthesia hit a bit hard and I didn’t end up fully waking up until middle of the night surgery night. Began walking, could hardly sip, all normal stuff. I could immediately pick myself up and didn’t require assistance in sitting up or walking around, was just extremely tired. Three days post op I began feeling what I assumed were the dreaded gas pains dead center of my abdomen. I called my doctors office, scoured the forums for advice, nothing helped. I tried the milk of magnesia assuming I was backed up, not the case. Tried gasx bc the pain latest 3 days non stop. Couldn’t hardly move, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t walk, couldn’t sit, lay, anything. So! Fast forward to Thursday (6 days post op) and I’m balling on the phone with my doctors office pleading there’s no way this is gas. So they bump my post op appointment to the next morning if I can wait. If not, they say don’t wait to go to the ER. Next morning on Friday my mother rushes me to the office, we barely get through the door and they’re sending us to the ER next door. After many tests, hours of different pain meds that didn’t work...a ct scan shows a prominent Portal vein thrombosis. A massive and extremely painful blood clot in my chest bc of the surgery. Little pre surgery info, I’m extremely healthy. I’ve never had heart burn, acid reflux, diabetes, heart problems, any issues health wise. I’ve now been in the hospital for over a week dealing with the excruciating pain, blood thinners, 6 days of NO FOOD OR WATER, not even ice chips. Talk about torture. So, just a heads up...it’s not always gas pain. This may be super rare, which is what I’ve been told, but still...it sounds like gas pains...it still may not be. If your pain is at a 10 go to the dang hospital.

    Sleeve or mini gastric bypass

Hopefully you have a good program that educates you about the different options. You should along with your surgeon be able to make a choice that best suits your medical needs. I had a class that I had to attend to start things off that gave me two options, sleeve or gastric bypass. The surgeon spoke to the class with illustrations on a projector and took questions about both procedures. I then went home and started a 6 month diet that was laid out in detail by a nutritionist. During the 6 months before my face to face with the surgeon, I had lots of time to think about the pros and cons of both surgeries. During the 6 month diet, I would become dead set on the sleeve then read or hear something that changed my mind and I would start feeling like the bypass was the best choice. It kept going like that for about 2 or 3 months until I watched so many YouTube videos and read so many articles and forums that I decided on the bypass. Whatever you do, make sure you go into this educated and you are not pushed into making a decision based only on what one doctor says. I don't know if it will happen but I would like to go the rest of my life without another major surgery. I was determined to get this right the first time. Take it slow, do your homework and make sure you are putting your trust in a reputable center of excellence.

    Working out

Up until I broke my feet, I was doing Pilates reformer once a week, working with my trainer once a week, and doing either treadmill or bike 4x/week.

Please keep us updated, I had my first cystic acne flare right after my first baby and it return when I least wanted it. I haven't had any since my surgery but I'm sure it's waiting in the wings, maybe when I meet with my congressman or another inconvenient time. And yes I do know my congressman, no big whoop, he's not even a chairman of any commited. Just just a waste of space individual like many others.

    It was NOT gas pain.

My gas pain were quite severe. I spent my first night in the hospital and retching the entire night. I kept on thinking to myself boy did I make the wrong decision. Around about day three mini came home I started looking at stretching positions that relieve gas. I found making laps in my bedroom and having a sip of water at the end of each lap and then doing the downward dog on the bed really helps push my digestive and stomach track together to help move gas out of my system.

    Sleeve or mini gastric bypass

From what I have read the mini bypass also has an increased risk of reflux. RNY is generally regarded as the best option for reflux although it's still not 100%

Hope all went well! I was a nervous wreck before mine but excited as well. I will be one month post op come this Saturday. First few days are the hardest but nothing you can't handle, then like someone already said, you'll be like the rest of us saying it was the best thing you ever did!

    Being sick after RNY?

I ended up on a steroid and two different antibiotics. I didn't notice any difference other than my arms and hands were tingly. Doc said it was from the steroid. Then a couple weeks later went on another two antibiotic's for a severe UTI. I didn't have any issue with those.

I was talking to my husband about the judgement passed on people who have bariatric surgery. He is on the fence about the whole "easy way out" thing. But he is being supportive of me. So he tells me that when he thinks about the easy way out, he compares it to jumping off a plane. The easy way out would be when someone pries your fingers of the plane and pushes you out. That's the easy way out but the problem is that after that the is no getting back on the plane. So you are screaming all the way down hoping the parachute will open. My response was, think about it this way you are on a plane that has lost its engines. They tell you they are going to try landing it but chances are it will still be a crash landing and many on the plane will die. Or you can put on one of the parachutes and jump? So what do you choose? The plane is obesity. We know it is a killer. Some live long, normal lives while being obese, but the majority will get sick in various ways and die prematurely. If you jump, which is having the surgery, the parachute might not open but the chances of that are minimal. The parachute might open late and you will get seriously hurt, but you survive and end up living a long life. You might not land well because you don't know how to parachute and break your legs. But you still land and live. So which one do you choose? Stay on the plane and hope you survive the crash? Or jump and take the risks of jumping with the more likelihood of survival? It is a personal decision that only you can make for yourself. I choose to jump off the DAMN plane!!!! Because I am already on the plane and the only decisions you can make are jump or crash. The option to never get on the plane to begin with is long gone.
