  2. So. Much. Fluid. Seriously, my hands were so puffy that all my wrinkles disappeared (spoiler: they came back). I was also in for 2 nights and that IV was going non-stop. It took a little over a week for me to return to my day of surgery weight. Totally normal. They really should warn you, though.

  4. Thanks, all! I certainly count every ounce of the weight I've lost for my own purposes, but I guess I always assumed medicine was a science-y, formula kind of a thing. But every source seems to say something different!

How did you all go with your protein target after surgery? Im trying to get as much as possible, 100g but ideally 145g. I gotta say. It's hard!

    May 2024 Surgery Buddies 😁

So my surgery has been rescheduled, I am so glad that this is finally going to happen. Originally was set for March 12th, but had an issue with my kidney, everything is golden, and am now set for surgery on 05/02……started liquid diet process on 18th, I'm having such a hard time with it. I'm a diabetic and get weak light-headed, dizzy. My sugars are fluxuating, and the meal shakes are constipating me. Been reading posts from everyone, and got a lot of good info, so I don't feel so uninformed and alone on the journey.

    Vegetarian recipes

My go-to is always firm tofu or tempeh, stir fried with vegetables or prepared in an air fryer and served with roasted vegetables. I flavor the tofu in different ways; BBQ, ranch, honey mustard, and teriyaki are my faves. Quinoa mixed with black beans or black eyed peas, also with veggies, makes it onto my plate a few times a week, too. A trick that I have learned when preparing firm tofu is to squeeze out the excess water. I found something called a tofu press that is basically a box with a heavy spring. Place the tofu inside, press down, close the lid, and the excess water is drained out. It really, really helps!

    Recent Therapy Session

So after my revelation yesterday, I had my weekly therapy session. I have been going to therapy for almost a year now, mainly to help with my PTSD, and now moreso to address some of my trauma when it comes to my weight, and how that effects my emotional eating. I brought up my thoughts to my therapist, and she agreed that it is self-perception, not how my loved ones are seeing me. I'll be the first to admit, that I don't particularly like being emotional in front of other people, and in the entire year I have been attending therapy, I have only cried in front of my therapist 2-3 times. I found it quite hard to hold back the tears during this session (though that didn't stop me) - I realised that I have only really scratched the surface of the trauma I have from past relationships, and how that has completely tattered my self-image. More than anything, I realise that now more than ever, I need to address this as I approach the beginning of my weight loss journey. It is becoming more and more apparent, as everyone says, that surgery really is just a tool. It will give me that initial kick to lose weight so that I see the physical benefits: I will be in less pain, more able to get up and move about, more energy. I will *hopefully* feel more positive in myself and more confident. But the rest of the work, well, surgery can't do that for me. I am responsible for changing my behaviour & attitude, and I think for me at least that starts with being kinder to myself. I can't remember a time where I have been kind to my body, in how I treat it, and how I think about it. I realise that if I want to be successful on this journey, I need to work on me as a whole, body and mind, or else success isn't something I'll be able to achieve. Old habits would creep in, and my expectations would be too high. I am now attempting to drop the mindset of: "when I am skinny everyone will love me, and they will all treat me better and I will be an amazing person" - because truly, that has been my internal narrative, and I didn't see it as a negative until the other day. I need to rework it into: "I am me now, and I will be the same person on the inside even when I have lost weight. Those who I care about already love me and treat me with respect and care, and anyone who doesn't, isn't deserving of knowing me. Regardless of if I am 20 stone, or 11 stone. I am worthy of love". So, time to put my words into action 🤞🌸

    Trimfit

If you're considering taking TrimFit, I suggest checking with your healthcare provider or a nutritionist first to ensure it’s safe for you. They can also offer advice on what to expect and whether it's likely to be effective for your specific needs.

    May 2024 Surgery Buddies 😁

😖 I am a bit concerned as to how I will cope with the pre-op diet! I know I won't cheat or anything, but I find that when I don't eat enough I get severely dizzy, nauseous and very faint. I'll be at work too, so I am just going to try and stay behind my desk 🤣 I hope everyone is doing well!

    May 2024 Surgery Buddies 😁

@corylus Glad to meet someone having surgery the same day as me! I also feel that it is good to read others comments here, we are definitely not alone. My first day I also felt brain fog, and a craving for something sweet or salty. I think I will try some gatorade to see if that helps the craving. Maybe I need sodium. I keep thinking 1day down and 13 to go. I hope it does get better eventually. I did discover that adding some PB powder to my vanilla shake made a pretty tasty peanut butter shake. I also added a bit of sugar free chocolate syrup to my chocolate shake and it was pretty tasty. I do love chocolate.
  12. that's totally up to you. Some people count their highest weight, others count the day they start their liquid diet, and still others count the day they had surgery. It makes no difference.

    how do you know ....

you could always get a Dexascan to see how much fat, muscle, etc you have. Not the kind you get at the doctor's office - those only check for mineral (bone) density. You need the kind they have at some sports places (some university sports labs have them) or at commercial places like DexaFit. Those scans will also tell you how much fat, muscle, etc you have. I got one when I weighed 146 lbs because I wanted to see how much more weight I could lose. The technician said nope - I was done losing. I had 21% fat at that point, which is pretty lean for a woman (unfortunately, I'm not that lean anymore!). but I found it pretty helpful. I think it was around $100.

    how do you know ....

I didn't have mine weighed after it was removed, but a lot of people claim theirs only weighed 4 or 5 lbs. I guess if you have a lot of liposuction you could lose more than that. I don't think my weight went down much. I looked about a zillion percent better, though!
  15. I honestly didn’t notice it after my sleeve surgery but I was in hospital for a couple of days so it was day 4 before I think I weighed myself so had likely already peed most if not all of it out. I was out the next day after my gall removal & there was a good 2+kgs (5 odd lbs) on the scales (at my current weight so a lot comparatively). Yikes. I swear all I did was pee for the next few days. 😁

Go to dessert or sugary protein snacks

one of my favorite desserts is to get some vanilla Greek yogurt (Chobani makes a 60 calorie one - and Light and Fit aren't much more than that), stir in some unsweetened cocoa powder, and then add a dollop of sugar free Cool Whip and a few raspberries.
  17. yep - super common. It's just the IV fluid.
  18. As all above 100%. Your medical team may track what you’ve lost since surgery but how you look at it is your choice. To me, it doesn’t matter that some weight was lost before surgery & some after. You’ve still lost all that weight & that’s amazing. Congratulations.
  19. Thanks! I was NOT expecting the scale to go up. I was shocked, but I know it will go down eventually.
  20. Yep, it is. They pump you full of lots of fluids. You’ll pee it out over a couple or so days & the scale will drop. But it is a shock when you see the number on the scales & realise how much they filled you with. PS Congrats on your surgery.

    OOTD

Absolutely gorgeous - the dress & your daughter. You’re so talented. So few people know how to sew on a button these days let alone make a dress as beautiful as this. I used to make gowns to wear to B&S balls (bachelor & spinster balls in country Australia. Would go for two days & involve copious drinking & very little dancing.) Went to a few when I was teaching in central Queensland back in the day.

    Feeling regret

YOU sound like your Dehydrated. Gotta keep those fluids going
  23. I had a DS on 4/19, spent 2 nights in the hospital, and then had to travel 4 hours to get home yesterday. I was disappointed when I finally stepped on the scale to find I had gained 11 pounds!!! Is this normal? Is this because of the IV fluids?

    May 2024 Surgery Buddies 😁

@SandyT I'm having a gastric sleeve on May 6 as well! Glad to read about others' experiences here, helps me feel like I'm not on my own. I started my protein shake diet a couple days early on 4/19, and it has been rough so far (extreme fatigue, headaches, brain fog, and bloating). A few people have told me it usually gets better after 3-5 days, and I really hope that's the case!

Scared to do this but more scared to die

I swear I was 33 yesterday, but somehow today I am 50 and I promise you, that's way too young to die. You deserve a long life, and you deserve for it to start now, when you're still young enough to enjoy every minute of it. Surgery can be scary, but the good news is it isn't dangerous and it can help you have a healthy life.

Go to dessert or sugary protein snacks

@Spinoza I am giggling that you invited the devil for Easter. I agree that I avoid sugar substitutes, and the amount of real sugar I allow myself at this point is minimal. But I do have two treats I look forward to every day. I really love my cherry flavored calcium chews, and even better, I splurged on the Procare chocolate calcium and have one every evening after dinner. It's a piece of dark chocolate, but it's also my calcium supplement, and it's delicious.
