    I've honestly not heard of outpatient. I think it's pretty typical to stay one night. Where are you having surgery?
  5. Please don't shave. I'm sure it's in your best interest. I dont think they care what you look like. I must have looked crazy all sprawled out under anesthesia. lol
  6. Also, I had to shower with an antiseptic soap the night before and the morning of surgery and on top of that they made me use these wipes on my entire body. Talk about taking precautions!

    Pre-Op Diet Adherence

    My pre-op was 2 shakes 2 protein bars and one small meal. I lost 16 lbs that week and we ate at Applebees. I just ate small amounts. Good luck!

    Did you just start taking the medicine? I had gastric bypass and had to start taking Ursodial (brand name Actigall) right after I got home, one capsule twice a day, to prevent gall stones. Of course for the first 8 weeks I had to empty the capsules as I couldn't swallow them. Blech. I now can take the capsules whole and I do with as much water as I can swallow. You have to take it for several months for it to be effective and I've been told to take it for 6 months. I have not had any nausea with it, thankfully. I take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and at night before bed. On the Web it says common side effects include stomach upset, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, back pain, hair loss, or cough. Maybe your doctor can prescribe an alternative?
  10. That is weird. I shaved my legs the previous day vs that morning because I didn’t know if the stuff they give you to shower with would burn. But four days? That doesn’t make sense to me
  11. They said this because of a certain anti-bacterial wipe I’m supposed to wipe all over my body before surgery.

    Carafate question

    I would ask your surgeon how he wants to handle it, as it is difficult to effectively take early on when we are often eating and drinking very frequently. Drinking will wash it away as well as eating, so you have a conflict between taking the Carafate and staying hydrated (hydration is probably more important still at this point) I was prescribed it a couple of years ago and asked the doc (not my surgeon - this would be several years post op) if it really made any sense to take it an hour (or whatever) after a meal and then nothing for x hours as I eat 5-6 meals a day and drink all the time in between. We agreed it made the most sense to just take it over night. Collectively, you need to figure out the best compromise to get the desired results from conflicting requirements.

    Surgery is complete! Onto road to recover

    I have 2 more pre-op visits then wait for approval and date. As I've had the lap band most of the visits are just visiting. The diet is much the same for both, the recovery a bit harder for the sleeve. I'm getting nervous but will just take this one month at a time.

    Ugh, I just started mine today and my surgery is tomorrow! I was worrying about the same thing about wiping and being able to change tampons. Sorry to hear you had a rough start.

  17. I was told not to shave before my lower body lift, but not before my bariatric surgery. That doesn't really make a lot of sense since your legs aren't anywhere near the incisions, but whatever... Maybe your hospital just tells everyone that, regardless of the type of surgery they're getting? Beats me. That is sort of weird.

    there are a lot of different liver shrinking diets depending on the surgeon. Mine required two weeks of no-calorie (or very low calorie) liquids and 4-5 protein shakes a day. We were also allowed sugar free Jello and a limited amount of tomato juice, V8, and broth. That's it. Some surgeons allow people to have limited food - e.g. a small dinner of meat & vegetables. Some surgeons don't require a pre-op diet at all.

    Check with your doctor's staff, as there is no universal "liver shrink diet" - programs vary all over the map on what they want your to do from months of only clear liquids to nothing special at all.

    For those who hated or were bored with exercise

    I led a very sedentary life for about 15 years before surgery (which directly explains my massive weight gain during that period). Today, I do at least one hour of some sort of exercise every day, and while I wouldn't go so far as to say I LOVE it, it has just become part of daily life that I just DO. Like breathing. Or getting dressed every day. With that said, I do hate weight training which is why I only do it for about 20-30 minutes 1 or 2 times a week (a necessary evil though, to maintain/build muscle mass. Boo.) I do find that I prefer going to classes. Something about being around others makes it less boring. I enjoy Zumba and Hot Yoga. I started going to a Cardio Pump class which is ok (but is basically weight training disguised as aerobics) so I don't think I'll last long there. I have gone to a few Spinning classes, which I like so far, but I can't keep up with the rest of the class yet so I am working on it. When I can find someone to go with me, I'll go climbing/bouldering at a gym nearby, but partners are hard to find, and climbing/bouldering can get expensive! I also do a lot of walking, which I thought would bore me out of my mind, but turned out to be my favourite form of exercise. I put on my headphones and just head out the door and come back an hour later. The time just flies by it seems...which is a good sign In short, find something that you like to do, you will more likely stick to it and make it part of your everyday life. Try out different things until you find the activities that work for you. And it doesn't have to be just going to a gym or classes...you could join a sport team, take up running/hiking, swimming...the options are endless. Good Luck!

    You need to recognize the 'want' of these foods, not saying never, but just don't partake - it leads to head games, you must take care here and honor the beginning process as THE ONLY TIME you will have to maximize the skills and the losses you will need to sustain your success down the road. It changes. You can just about ingest anything and everything right now in a small quantity and lose, false sense of security and success. Go watch Dr Duc Vuong on youtube, watch one every day for reinforcing the rules.
