Thanks so much. My surgery is in two days in the Atlanta, GA area. I have been so nervous. My husband is so supportive but I have still not been able to bring myself to tell my family, meaning my four older sibs and two parents. My parents really shouldn't know till after the fact anyway due to their health. I haven't told my family (yet) since I can't imagine never telling them. I just I haven't been able to bear the thought of dealing with everyone else's questions, fear, anxiety and ignorance pre-surgery. I wonder how many people feel the same way. Thanks for your reassurance.

Hello Splashdancer,

I am waiting for insurance approval and hope to receive a yes answer soon. I too feel like you. I have not told my family for the same reasons you mentioned (ignorance, fear, anxiety) or just their negative opinions. I have 3 close friends that are my support group. If you have your husband who is really supportive, that is a blessing. Once your family sees how happy you are and how good you look, they will forget that you did not tell them.

I think this decision is a personal decision. It is your body and you have the right not to tell everyone what you are having done. I look at this as a time for me to be selfish for once in my life and do something that is for me. This is a huge decision and you don't need the added stress of other peoples opinions.

You hang in there and keep thinking real positive, and you will do well. I know you will!

Hi Splashdancer, there is a lot of info on www.realiseband.com about the sleeve gastrectomy that you can print and share with your mom and dad but please in your own time share your good news with your parents you will need that added support, they will understand and thats the best part about parents (they dont Judge you)...I never regret telling my mom,my dad is deseased...so I do a lot of praying and tell everything to God He dont judge either...so If you need lots of friends come to my FB Page look me up under (Marnetta Miller)I have a group called VSG for me and you will love talking to the friends 1 on 1 .....its kinda kool.....you wont feel like you are in this all alone...ok....so please have a talk with your parents and let them know even though they may not understand why at first but just tell then you are doing this just for you and your health to live longer to take care of your children...dont forget look me up...ok

Hello,It is a personal desision who you want to know about your own body,,but you dont want to have it on your coutious,if something may go wrong and you didnt tell anyone but you can always print off some of the info and share it with your family, the support is great because you will be in the hospital for 2 days and you will need the help around the house....they will be good to help and you can not do any lifting or even go to the store...so it is good to have family around to help....please reconsider and pick and choose who you want to know and also you want them to keep it confadential(you dont want anyone else to know....;)

Hello there. I am scheduled for surgery on Oct. 19th. Like you, I have told only two very close friends but none of my family. I've got a brother-in-law... well, let's just say that I really don't want to hear him trying to be helpful! His helpful comments fall into the hurtful category. Aside from that, and being very anxious about surgery itself, I am looking forward to this. I have begun on the protein drinks for two meals a day & have cut carbs way down. I've done this to sort of ease into the all-liquid regime. At the 2-week bell I will go to all-liquid protein, per my surgeon's orders. I want to lose 100 pounds. Exercise is going to be the hardest for me so I've started by increasing the amount of walking I do each day; I am parking further out in lots, and deliberately climbing the stairs in our house faster than I would normally do. My surgeon wants me to swim & we've a neighbor who has a pool, but I'm cautious about that... moi in a bathing suit? I don't think so!

I'd love to hear from others who are pre-surgery. I would be nice to know that I'm not a raving loony by keeping this quiet.
