Lapband didn't work for me

Hey there, Happy Holidays!

Was wondering if I could ask you a couple questions about the lapband?

I had the surgery June 5 and i have lost 20 pounds. I have not lost a single ounce since before Jennifer's wedding. I have had 7 fills. (my band is 11cc and I have 8cc in it now.) I am eating a calorie restrictive diet. But I am able to eat as much as I could before. I am not snacking in between and I am not exercising like I should. My doc says to be patient and that my weight loss will come next year. I am so lost right now, I am not sure what happened and if its even gonna work. I don't know what to do, just thought maybe someone could give me advise.

Weight lose does stall with the band even when you are doing things right. Couple of questions, you say you are eating a calorie restricted diet but are you eating enough protein. If you read some of the research with lap band they have found that people who eat a low calorie high protein diet lose better. Now I am not talking about a low carb diet but a balance of carbs and protein with the protein intake being higher than the carbs. i know it may be silly but sometimes you have to eat more to lose, if you eat a too restrictive calorie diet your body can think you are trying to starve it and can go into hibernation mode and hold onto every little fat cell we have. You may want to keep a food diary for a week or so and figure out your BMR so you know how much your body needs everyday. I was really surprised when I calculated mine, I myself stalled for over 7 months. Did not drop not one pound, I was eating to little, i had to increase my calorie intake up to 1250 and my protein up from 60-70 fms per day to 90-110gms perday. Once i did this combined with cardio in the form of walking on the road or treadmill 5 days a week with 2-3 days of weight training I started to lose again. It took me several months to figure out that I was not losing because my intake was not enough deficit of what my body needed to lose a pound of fat. I hope this all makes since, a good nutritionist or trainer could help you figure this out so you don;t feel so frustrated with the process. Good luck and hang in there, It can and does work just slower for some than others.

You need to remember the band isn't supposed to physically stop you from eating anything, so being able to eat at as much as you could before isn't a sign the band isn't working. As far as what you're eating, I would suggest seeing a nutritionist to establish an eating plan and calorie budget that works for you. As stated in the post above this one, eating too little is actually a really common mistake. A nutritionist can help you figure out if you're eating too much or possibly not enough.

You mentioned that you are not exercising as you should - perhaps you have already identified an area that you can focus on to achieve the results you are looking for.

My friend lost all her weight TWO YEARS after her band date. She lost it retry uickly too once she started dropping. She kept with it, visited her dr every month, got w a NUT. Don't get discouraged. Just keep trying! The only thing you have to lose is weight!

Lots of good advice up there. I double vouch for the nutritionist. I was 4 months into my journey and had only lost 12 lbs. I sat down with my nutritionist and she pointed out some mistakes I was making. i started losing almost immediately. Of course, I got a few fills and the extra restriction enabled me to eat less. So now I'm down 50 lbs and loving it.

Sounds like you are not near the green zone yet? Do you eat solid food? I'm talking about seafood, lean hamburger, chicken breast, veggies? I know even now that I could sit down and down half a pan of hamburger helper easily. I can eat slider food almost like I could a year ago. But, if I eat a lean chicken breast, broccoli, salad I can eat much less. I feel satisfied so much sooner.

If you are eating right you really need a good fill. Don't give up, I've seen so many here who didn't really kick it in gear until year 2 or later. See a nutritionist!!

I just want to say I agree with the other replies here. I've read countless stories about LB patients who went a year or more with minimal weight loss. Through trial and error they were able to pinpoint why they weren't losing. Once they changed just a few minor things, the weight started coming off quickly. Definitely track your food (myfitnesspal app is free for your phone) and speak with a nutritionist. Wishing you the best of luck!

You may be on a calorie restricted diet but maybe you're not eating the right things. I cant see only losing 20lbs since June if you're doing everything right. Calorie deficit means your body has no choice but to lose weight. You're not telling us what you are eating so we can't help if we don't know what you're eating.
