Are you losing a ton of weight right now? When I was losing the bulk of my weight my hair was really falling out but now that I am in the maintenance part my hair is back to normal..nice and thick & full..I would even say healthier than before! I wouldn't worry too much if I was you. I know my doctor had suggested (not that I had to do it) but he said that some women with extra long hair cuts their hair to a shorter cut so it isn't so noticeable. I looked at is the hair will grow back...I lost about 13 lbs a month so it was well worth the trade for me. Just keep your chin up and stay positive! Everything will work out! Take care!

i have the same problem, but i'm not sure mine is related to the band. i am doomed to wear wigs for the next three months at least, while i apply cream from my dermatologist on a daily basis. I would recommend you go to a dermatogist and see what they say. i also have hypothryroidism and wore sew-in weaves for over a year. i think mine is a combo of all those things, plus genetics. i literally have a bald spot on my left temple and on the top of my head. i was devistated, but i'm praying that it grows back, and i will take better care of my hair in the mean time. i feel your pain.

I have my surgery on the 12th and hair loss is one of my main concerns! This has really helped out. My doctor told me to take Biotin pills that they really help and also Omega-3 or Flaxseed Oil! Hope that helps

I have not noticed thinning yet, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. My doctor recommends that all of his patients take Bariatric Fusion - which is a multi-vitamin. I will start with flax seed oil though, too - just to be on the safe side.

Good luck, and keep us all posted.

Hair is comprised of a lot of protein. If you are not getting at least half of your current weight in protein you are not getting enough. For instance, if you weigh 300 lb you need a minimum of 150 grams of protein. I know it sounds like a lot but it is very essential. If you get your protein, your hair will NOT fall out!

I am post op 10 months now. Taking biotin and flax seed oil tabs for a few months now. Still losing lots of hair and thining out. I guess I still am not getting enough protein in. It is hard when my food portions are so limited. I have lost 60 lbs.

Mine and my friend's fell out like crazy from about 3 to 6 moths post op and then started to sprout back. A year later she had to have her GB out and had the exact same thing...its temporary!

On the other hand, you need half your ideal weight in protein every day (if you should weigh 120 lbs, you need 60 gms of protein a day)...this is critical to your overall health!

I am so glad I found this blog. I think every single women's worst fear is her hair falling out. Yes, we first want to be healthy that is why we are all doing this, right? I see my nutrionist tomorrow and will take notes. I see biotin and flaxseed from the comments above helps. I am over 300 pounds so I best get all the protein in as possible. Someone commented above about 150 grams of protein (is that even possible to do in a day)? I haven't a date yet for surgery, I am in the very early process and have 5 more monitored months to go.

My doctor told me that I needed at least 70 grams of protein a day to prevent hair loss. It worked! I don't know if the amount varies per person's weight or not, but focus on the protein. I make certain that I drink at least one EAS 42 gram protein drink a day as a supplement.

Wow I thought I was just going thru some weird life change. I was banded Jan 2011 and played on a yoyo since this past January. Since January I've lost 50 pounds, I take 10,000 mg of biotin and even started using Rogain for women, and neither one has created growth, what I got was long strands of what I have left. I finally had to embrace what I have and had it cut into a pixie. But I read from all of you that the amount of protein is essential. OOOOOPS, I don't think I have eaten that much protein. I usually have a yogurt a day, and maybe fit a protein shake into it, but thats all I get down daily. I know I know I need to eat more, but ..... just another excuse. I'm at the point that I'm almost afraid to eat. I'm finally down to a size 12, I don't think I've seen this size since I was a teenager I just don't want to go back up. at one time I remember shopping for 24's and 26's, wearing a 3x. I just don't ever want to see that again.

Check with your M.D. the soy in the protein drinks may be contraindicted with your hypothyroidism. You might be better drinking the protien water drinks.
