Good Morning! My name is Peggy and I am 61 years old. I love spending time in the garden, doing landscaping and just working in the dirt. I am also a crafter and love making things for outside. I work in ceramics, and reusing wine bottles and just doing all kinds of things. Just watched a video this morning on how to make a concrete bench that looks like it has tree stumps for legs and an old plank for a seat.

I have battled weight issues (and lost) since I was a young girl. I have also battled severe clinical depression since the age of 5 (I don't know what it's like not to be depressed) which also hasn't helped with the weight issue, but never give up. I've tried every diet out there and failed. I developed Ty[e II Diabetes about 15 years ago.

I have battled cancer 3 times (and won), though I did have to have a total laryngectomy 7 years ago. I can no longer speak. Went through several dozen surgeries in 2007-2008 and spent years recuperating. A couple years ago I started having issues with my legs (a back problem) that is making mobility difficult. I am fighting it the best I can though.

Needless to say, the pounds just keep piling on.

My sister had bariatric surgery done years ago and almost died, so it never entered my mind to try it. I seem to have adopted a "Murphie's Law" when it comes to surgeries, so was always afraid to even try it. Well, my cousin had Lap Band surgery earlier this year and has lost almost 125 lbs! I am so excited for her as she also has leg problems like I do.

She started talking to me about it. She so loves her doctor and she kept at me ... so I finally jumped in and made the decision to see her Dr. She's right ... he is awesome, and he is the one that gave me a flyer for BariatricPal. He put all my unrealistic fears to rest. My surgery is now scheduled for August 19th and I am so excited. A bit anxious, but I have always been an optimist.

This IS going to go well ... I AM going to work hard and lose LOTS of weight and be able to walk into any store and buy clothes. I am going to be able to walk into any office and not have to worry about fitting into their chairs or fly without having to ask for a seat belt extension ... all the things most people don't even thing about; and others of us think about it every hour of every day.

I am also realistic. My cousin, even with her great weight loss, still has problems with pain her legs; but if it is the same with me, I can live with it. I hope the diabetes goes away, but if it doesn't, I can live with that too. I know this is a life changing surgery (been there, done that); but I am strong, and I am a fighter and a survivor and I am committed to this whole-heatedly.

So, no looking back ... now is my time. I have already lost 40lbs and hope to lose another 20 before surgery.

I applaud you all for having the courage and commitment to better your lives by taking this step. I know it won't be easy, but with the information and support I have found here, I WILL do it.

Looking forward to meeting you all...

Peggy
