Hi all.
My name is Lesley, and I had Lapband surgery first performed on 15th June, 2009 at 63 years of age. I had just completed Radiotherapy for Breast Cancer and two months later had the Lapband Surgery performed.
I subsequently lost 32Kg from June to November, 2009 and at the one year anniversary, 15h June 2010 I came within 900gms of my goal weight of 62kg. Unfortunately, the band slipped in June, 2010 and had to be removed for one month before being replaced. I have been one of the very few unfortunate ones who have had problems with the band, but refuse to give up. Getting the correct amount of fill has been a challenge as I can take so little fluid, a maximum of 2.5ml before problems start to occur.
In September, 2011, whilst holidaying in our north, I was hospitalised with lap band problems and had most of the fluid removed. This was adjusted back up in small increments once I left hospital.
No more problems occured until our around Australia trip last year and once again I was hospitalised in Townsville in August, 2013 due to constant vomiting and reflux. They only left 1.3ml in the band and that has been it until June this year when I was suffering badly from reflux, particularly at night. A visit to the Specialst rooms, and seeing one of his associates, I was sentt for tests which indicated a pouch had formed above the band. This was not from overeating, but a Hernia shich has caused it.
My Specialist does not return from leave for two weeks to address the problem, so I have investigated via the inernet. It appears the only avenue open to me is to have the band removed, for a second time, and if the pouch corrects itself, have the band repaced at a later date. In some cases it does not correct itself and permanent removal is the only option.
Has anyone else suffered from this?
While I may sound all doom and gloom, I know of so many people who have had no problems at all. In spite of my personal problems, I would highly recommend the surgery as it has been my lifeline. My biggest fear is the band will have to be removed permanently.
Please do not let me put you off having Lapband as every patient is different and I just happen to be in the small percentag who have experienced problems.
