I've been overweight to morbidly obese as long as I can remember, and at 400lbs realize that I am giving up so much life for a few tasty bites of food. So far youth has been on my side and kept me from more serious ailments like diabetes and high blood pressure, but with sever sleep apnea already I realize that the clock is running out and it will get much worse from here.
For the past couple years my husband has talked with me periodically about the possibility of surgery. I've been apathetic at best, to aggressively against it at worst. However, over last winter a realization finally started to take hold in me that I had never thought about before; my weight was holding me back in my professional life. This shocked and angered me. Something I have put so much time and effort and so much of myself into as my job was turning against me. I had spent the last 6 years so wrapped up in work that I stopped caring about my body and the nuturing of my physical and emotional self. The time was ripe for change, but fear was still holding me back.
Then I stumbled upon the gastric sleeve. I hadn't heard of it before, but the more I read the more I realized that I could do this. So, for purely sentimental reasons at the time since I was born there, I made an appointment to attend a seminar at Swedish in Seattle. I filled out all the paperwork to start the process during the course of the seminar in January, and had an intake appointment by mid February. March 6th started my 3 months of supervised weight loss, and June 18th was my last check-in for it.
Now you may be wondering, if you're having the gastric sleeve, what are you doing here? It turns out that I have an unusually shaped stomach, since birth. During the endoscopy that the surgeon performed in May, we found out that my stomach is in the shape of a letter "C", with the esophagus coming down to attach to the end of the top of the "C". This is not recommended to perform a sleeve gastrectomy on, so my choices were band or RNY. I've read of way too many complications and failure of the band, so I went with the "gold standard".
Today, I should be just 2-3 weeks away from surgery. The first submission to insurance got rejected due to missing a letter/physical clearance from my primary doc. That has been rectified and resubmitted as of July 23rd. I'm expecting, and indeed praying for, final approval from insurance the week of July 29th. I'm ready to join you, Losers, in the best possible way!
Please feel free to contact me, I'd be happy to provide and accept support.
